DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Sound sucks

by Buzzmaster on 1/21/12Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 1 out of 5

If it is their sound engineer, then its their problem. If its yours, you need a new one. The sound balance was about the worst I've ever experienced, and I've done plenty of live performances. Why was it so important to crank the bass louder than the vocals? Between the bass over-amplification and drum level at maximum, that was about all that could be heard, and probably why Devo, and the warm-up band, failed to move the audience, except for a few in the front row.

  • Awesome!

D E V O! I am at a loss for words on how much fun the show was. Remember seeing them for the first time in the late 70's on SNL. This band changed my life. I was listening to bands like Kansas, Foreigner, Journey, etc. and they opened my eyes to a whole new world of music. I am amazed on how much energy they brought to the stage. The place was packed and the fan's really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Hopefully a whole new generation of spuds will emerge. My wife had a blast and she isn't a DEVO fan.

by ChrisV82 on 12/19/11House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Devo's performance was enthusiastic and very enjoyable. The crowd was into it as well, even though it was smaller than I expected. The opening act Trippple Nippples was stellar. It was a unique show all around.

  • great band bad seat

by rackensack on 12/19/11The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I was seated in front of VIP which these bimbos were dancing in front of me. $110 dollars plus another $150 in merchandice and beer purchases and couldn't see the show unless I stood up!! Why get a seat when the general admission you could see the band better? It is a very nice place however.

  • DEVO ALWAYS ROCKS!!

by BattmanLovesDevo on 12/19/11The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 5 out of 5

They start with cool videos, play a couple new songs mixed with old, and then they just start kicking ass... gaining momentum as they go! I have seen them 4 times and will always go back again when they are in the area. They never disappoint. People think they are some gimmicky band, but they they have hard core punk rock roots, and it comes out when they play live. You can see they just love to do their thing, as their energy level is way up there. Spoke with some people after the show that weren't DEVO fans and just happened to be there and the sentiment was the same with all of them. They said they didn't realize how great DEVO is, and they have a new found respect for the band. Take it from there.

  • Ageless!

Had a great time seeing DEVO for the first time. These guys are true rockers! The live versions of Mongoloid and Gates of Steel were heavy!

  • Great band to see live!

by ahipdude on 12/18/11House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

After all these years, Devo still rocks the house. A perfect blend of digital and analog, theatrics and rock! They get the audience pumped up inbetween songs, and are obviously having fun on stage. Jerry has an ear to ear grin during Peek-A-Boo! Mark throws bananas at the drummer, Bob1 flexes is biceps during Mr DNA, etc. This band has a great time on stage and the audience soaks it up. Mark throws a lot of things into the audience. For a guy that throws so many items into the crowd (hats, super balls, potato chips, bananas, pieces of yellow suits, etc), you would think this guy had a better throwing arm. He attempted to throw a bag of open chips into the crowd, and ended up winging them in his brothers face! You must see this band!!!

  • DEVO Still Has It!

by Jockohomo on 12/18/11House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

Considering the age of the members of DEVO, I was amazed at how energetic they were. The show was entertaining as hell and the quality of their vocals and playing was truly amazing. These guys aren't in their twenties any more but you really couldn't tell. It was not sold out but they didn't care and put on a terrific show. Bringing Bogie Boy out at the end in a Santa hat was icing on the cake. Fantastic show. We're all DEVO!!

  • Devo music is timeless and rocks the house.

  • DEVO = Funtastic Time & Great Venue

    by JPLO64 on 10/3/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

It is hard to resist a chance to see DEVO perform live, but then again I have seen them perform over 12 times or more now. I also saw them perform this last March at the Warfield and it was also an equally entertaining evening. I was front stage at that show, and I went almost deaf. I loved every second of it. Although they played the exact same set, and I knew they would. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I was in a car accident a few days before this and was in agony, but I couldn't miss this show. I couldn't say nicer things about the venue, it was a dream. The only problem was getting there. The hill it is on , is very hard to get to. I wish the guys in the band would have changed their set. I am not sure they know that most of the crowd had already seen the same set at the Warfield. They are getting older, and the never EVER jam. It would have been nice to hear at least one number that they didn't play in March.I wish they would have played at least one other tune from the new album. This might be due to the wonderful visuals they have playing behind them duing their show. They work very hard on those timing issues I would imagine. They still could leave a whole in their set to play a new or older tune, but I guess we are lucky that they are playing at all. GO DEVO. This is an act you shouldn't miss. I also got a signed drumstick from the Drummer Jeff Friedl, Josh Freese wasn't at this show. GO SEE DEVO IS ALL I CAN SAY. THEY KICK BUTT.

  • Devo Rocked, but Show was Short!

    by TommyG831 on 9/8/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 4 out of 5

Devo still has it after all these years. Saw them last on 12/31/1979 at the Long Beach Civic Auditorium, before they got really famous. This time, they put on a great show covering a bit of their different eras, but wish the show was a bit longer than the 80 minutes they were on.

  • DEVO -Always puts everything they have into it!

by DEVOtedLady on 9/8/11City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 2 out of 5

I saw DEVO at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA earlier this year. I used you, Ticketmaster, to purchase the following package: Price Level 1 VIP EXPERIENCE, 21 & OVER FOR VIP LOUNGE HOUSE RIGHT SEATING. Breakdown of charges: Tickets/Items $111.55; Order Process Fee $5.65; TicketFast Delivery $2.50. The total paid by me to you was $119.70. THAT SHOW WAS WORTH EVERY SINGLE PENNY AND MORE. ONE OF THE GREATEST THRILLS OF MY LIFE. Now, regarding the DEVO show at The Grove on Aug 5, 2011, I purchased the following package you offered: J-TYPE FULL PRICE VIP W/MEET AND GREET. The total amount I paid = $122.85. DEVO was awesome but the "MEET AND GREET" was disingenuous. I had to wait in line for 1 hour then stood at a table and was told to hand over my camera for a photo with the band. It's a lovely photo of just me with not one of the band members posing or visible, I had 30 seconds and was rushed through like just another steer through the chute to the slaughter-house. When the band finished autographs/photo-ops, everyone was again being herded right out the lounge door. Even when Gerry Casale, co-founder of DEVO, snuck in the lounge to see his fans, we were all told to leave now. Gerry was kind enough to pose with me for a photo. While we were being photographed, a large security guard put his hand on my back and said "time to go". When Gerry told the guard "Hey, these are my friends" the guard ignored him and proceeded to nudge me (albeit gently) to the door. I'm disabled and receive $1000/mo and have 2 sons to support. $122.85 is a lot of food I went without. Not going back to The Grove but I'd gladly pay $100+ to actually "MEET and GREET" DEVO. I'd do it 100 more times.

  • Devo was Awesome

by Joliec on 9/1/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

What a fun show - they played lots of early stuff and almost all the popular stuff. The crowd was into it and dancing and having fun (and no mosh pit like at the Warfield six months ago - at least the employees kept people from rushing the stage here). The Mountian Winery may not have been the best venue for them - I come here all the time, and this was one of the first times it was clearly not full, but there were enough of us to make them feel welcome. We had a blast - I love Mark Mothersbaugh.
