DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Sound is critical

by hcdevofan on 7/2/14The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

My hat goes off to these guys for still cranking out this weirdness after all these years. Their spirits and interest/ability to perform is still great. The fact that they pushed on without Bob C is also a plus, and that they pulled it off. The song selection was good, although they left out a few key songs... but that's always the case at a show. The main complaint I have was the sound was way too loud. Not "too loud" because I'm too old and can't handle it (I had ear plugs), but distorted and poorly mixed. The Wiltern is a classic venue, but the sound in the room isn't ideal either. But the level needed to be much lower to get the right, un-strained mix. This early music uses space or silence as a voice - extremely minimalistic by design. This stripped down music needs to breath, but unfortunately when everything is cranked up so much, the audience, natural reverb and echo of the room fill in all the blanks. It was hard to get a clean, articulate, album sounding vocal on any song as well (same reasons), so the fun and subtle hook of the songs was just lost. It was just a wall of noise. The stage performances and the fact that I saw these really old songs live still made it worth going, but I'll leave you with this thought. At 43, I still go to a show about once a month, and 9 out of 10 I'm going with a friend or 2. I went to this show alone by design, not wanting to worry about my companion that I dragged out (if they are enjoying the show or not). Very glad of this.

  • DEVO disappointment

by NoDEVO on 7/2/14The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

For me and my girlfriend DEVO was disappointing . We expected a show with a lot of energy and found ourselves bored for most of their set . I think it was a combo of the choice of songs and the band itself ... Zero energy . I take that back . There was brief moments when it was a concert ... brief moments !!! The Wiltern was not the issue .

  • Devo was forgettable!

    by musicalgoer69 on 7/2/14The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

They did NOT play The Girl You Want, Freedom of Choice, Working in a Coal Mine nor Whip It. They did not wear their domes. But they did wear their construction outfits for We Are Devo. Maybe a better concert for those that know all of their songs. I still enjoyed the 90 min concert. But left unfulfilled.

  • Once in a lifetime thrill

by HardCoreFan on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

As a loong time DEVO fan, I've always thought it would be great to see them perform songs from the "early days". At long last, that time has come. I was not disappointed!! We traveled back in time to 1974 and then moved forward song by song. As always, the band sounds awesome live. They still have plenty of energy and seemed as happy to be playing as I was to be listening. At the end of the show, the crowd hung on, savoring the moment and hoping for more. The set list was full of HardCore songs, but there were a few classics in there as well. If you've never heard the hardcore songs, they are rougher, raunchier, and as twisted as anything DEVO produced in later years. Don't miss a chance to see this live. It is most likely the only chance you will get. I love DEVO, and this, if it does end up being their final tour, was something truly special.

  • They are not men

by Gbronco on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Kickass set of mutated hardcore Devo I can't express the full on weird greatness that was in the Fox theatre that night. All twisted love.

  • DEVO history

    by NancyR1 on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Third time in last few years and each show was different and GREAT! This one had historical references to their early days and they played music that we didn't get to hear at either of the previous shows that were some of our favs, although not their biggest hits. Great show and love the Fox Theatre in Oakland.

  • Hard Core DEVO for the Hard Core

by DVOCVN on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

When I heard that Bob 2 (Casale) had passed, I figured I had probably seen the last of the Spudboys. I was wrong. As a tribute to their fallen comrade, the surviving members of DEVO took to the road to perform a list of songs that even this seasoned veteran hasn't heard save for the archived recordings and scratchy demos. Looking more fit than their last swing through Oakland, the band started their set sitting down, inviting the crowd into their Way-Back Machine, back to the year 1974, when the boys from Akron first got together to explore the truth about De-Evolution. After a few tunes from their stools, the guys got on their feet and started to show us all they can still rock the house in the new century. There was no "Whip It" or "Beautiful World." Instead there was "Soo Bawlz" and "Auto Mowdown." By the end of the evening, there were some new converts, and when Mark asked us "Are We Not Men?" We all knew the answer: We are ALL DEVO.

  • Devo

    by Bandit623 on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

I knew what to expect - hard core devo - played all the demos and songs for the stiff records' Devo Be Stiff. However, there were some in the audience who did not get the message and expected to hear some of Devo's 80 hits such as Whip It. Boy were they pissed off. I really wanted to hear Baby Talkin Britches and Mongolod which they played at other venues earlier in the tour; however did not play in Oakland. Very good lighting show in the 2nd set; however it did not help in making the show a memborable one. I would give it 2 stars. T-shirts were $30, way too much for my budget.

  • Great performance, sound was a let down

by Calaverasgrande on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Devo brought their patented showmanship. Alternately intense, weird, humorous and rocking. The sound was kind of a let down. Saem as the Kraftwerk show I just really could not hear much low mid. Certain instruments just seem to disapear from the mix. Not sure if it is poor mixing or a poorly set up line array. The subs are obviously working, but many times the sound is just thin. I'd also like to point out that the event staff were not doing a very good job of controlling some audience members. A very drunk couple in front of me 'decided' to sit in seats that were not theirs. While that did not affect me directly. The constant moving back and forth of audience members in that row of seats to accomodate these two drunk idiots was very annoying. Especially since that could have all been avoided if the usher had simply pressed home the seat # ticket # correlation.

  • Authentic Hardcore Devo!

by EdwinQBunnydict on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show! Faithful to original recordings. Everything largely performed live with minimal prerecording. Mark M. and Gerald C. were engaging with the audience. A truly once-in-a-lifetiime performance to behold!

  • GREAT! Except for the camera

    by Kezza1969 on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

The music was great. The camera in my view almost constantly was a bummer.

  • Disappointing

by SedRx on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

I love DEVO, and I listened to them a lot back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I had heard that their live shows are great. This one was not. Perhaps it was an off night for them. They started with several newer tunes. Then they moved into the classic material. They did well with their older material, and just as the show was starting to gear-up, it was over. They played for around one hour. Overall, it seemed a bit tepid and too short. Oh well...

  • DEVO was incredible!

by JoshBucky on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I just saw the DEVO "Hardcore" show and it was phenomenal. They played most of the best tracks off the two "Hardcore" early albums and even threw in a couple other obscure songs I had never seen them play.

  • DEVO was on fire!!

by Hydroz on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I took my sons (10 and 7 years old) to this. It was their first show ever and my first time seeing DEVO live. There was a great vibe to the evening and so much fun was had by all of us!! They put on a great show!! I will never miss another DEVO tour!!

  • Hardcore Devo

by Zimm on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed the show. Especially the meet & greet afterwards. They filmed the show, and the camera crew didn't have their act together. The show was supposed to start @ 8:00PM, but didn't start until after 8:30. Other than that, it was good to hear old(er) songs that I had never hear them play before. Mechanical Man, Clockout. They had Bob #2's son come out to play bass during the encore. Nice touch.

  • by Anonymous on 7/1/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

Devo played an entire set from their earliest days which you rarely hear. It was a good throwback, however they played for under two hours without having an opening act or playing any of their hits at the end or as an encore. When the house light came up at the end most people were confused and milled around for thirty minutes as the set was broken down in disbelief that they played so little. Just be aware that you won't hear your favorite songs and won't get any bang for your buck.

  • Devo was a ripoff

    by Spudboy2 on 6/30/14Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

I was very much looking forward to this show, being a fan since the release of the first album. The band sounded fine, no problems there; my issue was the fact that they played for under 90 minutes, with no opening act. When I saw that there would be no opener, I naturally thought that this would be a long retrospective covering 2-2.5 hours; after all they have a LOT of material from well over 30 years. But I was sorely disappointed in both the very short show and some of the content. The first half was them sitting down on stools, wearing T-shirts and playing a lot of stuff I didn't care for (I'm a fan of the first three albums). When I see Devo, I expect calculated weirdness and high energy. Mark's voice sounded really great though, exactly like in his younger days. Impressive. I did enjoy the second half of the concert, but was very disappointed with the short length- and I know everyone else felt the same. Due to this show I will likely never pay to see them again.

  • DEVO is as great as they've always been!

by Hubboon on 6/11/12Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

What can I say? The spud boys from Akron still ROCK IT. They played some new songs and a bunch of their old classics. I will never tire of the creativity and originality of Devo. The sound is great as they are, and always will be, one of the greatest bands of all time. The set, the show, the music, the look and sound of DEVO is truly inspiring. Thank you!

  • DEVO rocked the house

If you were there - you saw it -WOW Worth every penny The wife and i went not expecting too much but a date nite Wholly ___ Devo put on a Great show Had center close seats and never went to them - we stayed in the aisle dancing to every song If these guys come to town Go see them I'm 50 and knew every song so it was cool to see the younger crowd moving to some music other than rap and pop

  • Good, not as good as I expected

Really good show in some ways, but the singers voice died mid show
