DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • The Show U Want

They rocked so hard it could have been 1985 (except I am now old enough to legally drink - and then some). There were energy domes, multiple costume changes, DEVO cupcakes tossed in the audience, and Booji Boy. Best show I have been to in quite some time.

Excellent show, would have preferred "A beautiful world" sung in a regular voice. Would definately go again, and again, and again.

  • Q: Are we not men? A: We are DEVO!

by SJDevoFan on 8/30/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyed the show, they started with more recent songs and devolved to their origins. Costumes from the way-back machine. Heavy (proper!) attention paid to their early work.

This was another great show. Esentially the same set they played at the Warfield 6 months ago, the show was chock full of hits both new and old. They play all the new songs and "Whip it," very early in the set, and then treat you to a number of classics including, "Frredom of Choice," "Beautiful World." "Peek a boo": and others. Not a weak song in the bunch, and they all sound better live thanks to the quality of the performance. Even if you don't like their songs, you'd probably enjoy yourself just from the sheer exuberance the band brings to the stage. Highly recommended.

by toestub on 8/30/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 4 out of 5

Very simple. I love blues, rock...many forms of music. My mainline to Truth is these boys, and they put it out in a very danceworthy form. Music is better when you're not asked to check your brain at the gate, and better still if you don't arrive with the intention of doing that. DEVO= fun, truth, a good sensory workout. Don't be afraid to engage yourself.

  • deVO at The Mountain Winery

by Anonymous on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Devo never disappoints. One of the best bands ever! The staging, lighting, projections & of course the Music and Musicianship. My first time attending a show at The Mountain Winery, which is only 10 minutes away taking some back roads. The most beautiful Venue I have EVER been to. Spectacular. Not a bad seat in the house.

  • by Anonymous on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was really good. Devo played well. The stage was very small for the kind of showmanship they can provide. What was up with Dj Real ??? That guy totally sucked. Next time, lose him and just put Devo on.

I thought the Mountain Winery, would have been great place for my wife to rest her back. The seats were comfortable but the walking distance around the venue was obnoxious. The scenery was beautiful, The staff was friendly and accomodating. The show was great and the food and drink prices were obnoxious.

  • DEVO had everyone on their feet.

by racergh on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

I was really glad to see DEVO at last. They provided the soundtrack for my childhood. The show was great with fun songs new and old, many costume changes, stage antics, and audience involvement. I was bummed it ended so soon, but I think the venue had a curfew.

  • We're all DEVO

by Bogaigh on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

One of the most fun and entertaining band performances I've seen in a long time. They did a mixture of old (Mongoloid, Satisfaction, Smart Patrol) and new (Don't Shoot!). Devo was having lots of fun, and not just going through the motions. Lots of energy and fun. Don't miss!

  • by Anonymous on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Combining tight music with fun theatricality and video. Everyone on their feet for most of the show. Lots of fun.

  • Devo: Timewarp to the 80's

by TubeMonkey on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Devo has always been if nothing else, a live band. This is where they gained their "street cred" back in the day. Wearing t's, shorts and kneepads they ravaged the stage and the audience - if there was nothing else to do but play they'd do jumping jacks or run in place. The current tour covers the 70's, 80's and 10's (sounds weird, no?). Opening with material from their new and very strong album, Devo whip through these numbers and some from the 80's as well, favorites from Oh No! It's Devo, Freedom of Choice and New Traditionalists, even employing some of the original video for ONID's tour. But it's when they don their jumpsuits and ditch the keyboards for guitars we're in for a full fledged journey back in time. The crowd was on their feet from the 3rd song anyway, but now was time to pogo! Devo tears through the best of Are We Not Men and Duty Now like it was 30 years ago. Without stopping save for one costume change, these guys delivered the non-stop manic pleasure that was and still is Devo. If you remember them from the past, you will not be disappointed. If you've never seen them, go!

  • Devo Rocked!

    by Dude13 on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 4 out of 5

The Spuds were very happy as Devo put on a very entertaining and fun show! They only played 85 minutes but it was worthwhile! They played most of their hits and definitely got the crowd going. The Mountain Winery may not have been the best place for them to play as the place was over a third empty but everybody who was there seemed to be having a very good time. Next time I hope they play at the Warfield again or maybe the Fox.

  • Devo

by Beetlebub on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Devo is one of those bands that easily brings a smile to your face. Their music, while not mainsteam, is nevertheless very good and entertaining. We brought our kids and my 14yr old drummer son thought it was fantastic.

  • LOVE THEM!

by SantaCruzLiven on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

They were sooooo much fun! Costume changes, funny dances, great back drop show and played all my favorite songs! They were awesome and so much fun. One of the best times I've had at a concert.

  • The Best Devo Concert to date!!

by spazolla on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen these guys over the years and this was the best. They played some new songs and than allot of their old songs. The only thing I wish would change is the lighting they use to stop people using their digital cameras. I promise never to take a picture if they got rid of those lights.

  • Devo is great

by CMandoo on 8/29/11Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 4 out of 5

Saw the Devo show at the Mountain Winery. I last saw them in the mid-80's. The new drummer is great, and the rest of the guys brought a lot of energy to the show. The played all their hits, and really engaged the crowd. If you're a fan, this is not a show to miss.

  • DEVO was AWESOME!

DEVO and English Beat were AWESOME! We were pleasantly surprised by the phenomenal shows put on by DEVO and The Beat... amazing set list and remarkable performances. I will totally pay to see DEVO and The Beat again.. TOM TOM Club? umm, not so much.

  • SPUDS - GO SEE THIS!

by Stoli1962 on 8/17/11San Manuel Indian Casino - HighlandRating: 5 out of 5

This was an awesome show. This was my sixth time seeing Devo in concert and they are always on fire. I was not warming up to the new album "Somthing for Everbody" when I saw it live though it helped me understand how much DEVO still rocks and how relavent their message is. My hope is that they continue on and release more albums. DEVO has to be the most underappreciated band in human history. They have put out so many fantastic albums and the only song that people know is Whip it. My dream is to have DEVO play at my 50th B-Day! The only dowside was the venue. We were to the side of the stage and coluld not see the awesome graphic screen that DEVO had at the back of the stage. Try to get a seat in the middle if your venue has a deep stage.

  • Devo still has it after all these years!

by Blagamaniac on 8/10/11City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

For 60 year old dudes, these guys played with a lot of energy and sounded straight out of the 80's. They performed a good mix of new material, popular material, and old material. I would have given the show 5 stars except for the final encore. Beautiful World was sung almost entirely by Booji Boy and he rambled on about meeting Michael Jackson in the middle of the performance. I would rather have seen the song sung by the original singer.
