DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • DEVO Delivers for This Spud

DEVO far exceeded my expectations. These guys can still do great art punk and music 45 years after playing their first show in NYC. If you're looking for a living link between past, present, and future, you'd be hard pressed to find a better show than DEVO. A spud sends his thanks.

  • The Spud Boys have still go it!

by Original fan on 5/21/22The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The boys haven’t lost anything! Had the crowd dancing and singing along from the first song to the end of the encore. Was great to see some younger people out enjoying the show as well. If you’re a fan, get to a show!

  • Great band at great venue.

Have seen them many times since the 80’s. DEVO never disappoints! Even in their 70’s, they can rock.

  • Band was great, sound was great

    by D. D. on 5/21/22The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great sound and the band was tight! Only issue was they ran out of IPAs because of a concert the night or two before- they should have been prepared. Also food was horrible. Over heated and dried out. But Devo was just awesome! Please come to Philly!

  • We must repeat!

by SL on 5/21/22The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I'm so glad I went to this tour; they have not slowed down at all! I've seen them 4-5 times over the past 15 years, and I feel like they've somehow got a new boost of energy behind them. They sounded great, looked great, and the production was on point (really cool how the blended modern visuals with the old school video clips). I really hope they keep touring and will release new music. We must repeat!

    by Blade93536 on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

The fact that age did not slow them down and the varied setlist made this DEVO show a great one!!! Still one of the best live bands ever!

  • Great Concert!

Sound was excellent! Great show, I would definitely see them again.

  • Great show!!!

by POPS on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

Love DEVO, great new venue. When parking cost as much as a ticket, that is disturbing.

  • No announced times

by xrayattack on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 2 out of 5

So there were no door or set times announced for this event, only one time of 8pm. Attendees had no way to know if it was starting at 8 or if doors were at 8 or what time the band or other support acts were starting. There was no support, the main band started promptly at 8pm and as such myself and hundreds of others were late and missed part of the show

  • I'm a new DEVO-tee!

by Steve on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

I listened to DEVO in the 70s and 80s on Dr. Demento but didn't realize until this concert just how much they can rock! They put on a great show, with great visuals, and the band is as tight as ever. The venue was shiny and new, and all the staff was super friendly. A great night all around.

  • Weak concert information by TIcketmaster

by Patrivk on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 2 out of 5

Great Devo concert. Great venue. Ticketmaster failed! I kept looking for the event’s information on time, opening bands and could not find what I was looking for besides concert starting at 8. I always get to concerts too early so this time I showed up at 8:35 and Devo had been playing for a half hour already! Epic lapse of clear information for the concertgoer. No background info on the bands either to study before the event.

  • Cashless

    by Patrick S on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 2 out of 5

Venue is nice but they wouldn’t accept cash for anything….parking, merch, beer. Had to find alternative parking somewhere else where they would accept cash and missed half the show.

  • Devo brings it!

    by Kellie G on 9/28/21YouTube Theater - InglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show! The music sounded great. There were costume changes to go with the songs. It was a fun night with innovative music that still sounds fresh decades later. Remind me why Devo still isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

  • DEVO-tee from back in the day!

by BoojiBoyT on 7/6/14The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Concert was supposed to start at 7pm, so I arrived at 6:45 only to stand in line for 45 minutes. Doors didn't open to start admitting people until shortly past 7. DEVO didn't come out to start performing until I had been seated and slowly nursed down two cocktails. And to top it off, DEVO didn't even include "Whip It" in their set list. That was one of the songs I knew they'd include so us old guys who grew up with their music could go nuts. The concert was mostly a tribute to Bob Casale who's son came out to play with the band near the end. It seemed like they only played for maybe an hour. I was disappointed in the length and only felt the old DEVO-tee energy I remember from my younger days on only a handful of songs.

  • DEVO you don't know Hardcore unless you live DEVO.

by Middagh on 7/5/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

It was Saturday Night at the Fox Theater in Oakland and DEVO was set to perform the songs that did not make them famous. This was Hardcore DEVO, RAW and Creative. 4 figures appear in the basement and it is 1974 kids can smoke and Gerald Ford was taking over for Nixon and everything was good in the world. Mark Mothersbaugh with his now working smokers Emphysema Voicebox working kicks things off with Mechanical Man. Humor ran through the entire set of around 23 songs and for the casual fan it wasn't until around the middle of the set that things got recognizable with DEVO's classic cover of (I can't get no) Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. Then nearing the end of the set things the crowd seemed to pick up as we neared 1977 and the first DEVO album and songs started popping up that end up on the debut album. Songs like Uncontrollable Urge, Gut Feeling and Jocko Homo. I live Hardcore so this was a must see concert for me, my friend who went with me still enjoyed the concert even though they only played one or two songs that he knew. The set was ended with Booji Boy's Funeral and Booji coming out with a walker and performing U Got Me Bugged, then the band coming out and bringing Bob2's son out to play bass on Clock Out a song that Bob2 always played bass on and now that he himself had clocked out it seemed appropriate that his son stepped up to fill his shoes and energy dome. If you Love DEVO as much as I do and you missed this show...kick yourself you missed out.

  • Devo tribute to Alan in Oakland

by Russet on 7/3/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

the Spuds rocked the house! The band turned what I imagine could have been an esoteric rendering of throwaway numbers from a dank basement in addled minds, into a rocking show that presented to us the youthful energy this band always seems to bring to its shows. We were treated to songs that snapped our necks back when first we heard them so many years ago. Small talk but not small ideas rearranged our faces, melting onto the floor at a spectacular venue!

  • Amazing

    by wllm26 on 7/2/14The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

For Hardcore DEVO, it was something I thought I would never see. Truly at their best. A couple of songs did not need to be played (I would have rather seen something like The Rope Song or 37 rather than Satisfaction or Mongoloid) but were technically of the era. I can die happy if I don't see another DEVO show because this was them at their best. RIP Alan and Bob II

  • Hardcore Devo was top notch

by NervousEnergy on 7/2/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Hearing the older tunes they hadn't played live in decades was amazing and they sounded phenomenal. Very very energetic presentation and rad stage production. Really fun show.
