DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

Great show; the band was on fire. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. See this band live-you'll not regret it...

  • Fun, Fun, Fun

by Joliec on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This show was so much fun - tons of energy, enthusiasm and more costume changes than Lady Gaga. I haven't felt this good during a show in a long time. Great rapport within the band and with the audience. I thought they sounded great, too, and they played almost everythign you would have wanted them to play.

Devo is the best band ever!!! Fabulous act with great energy. I would never have guessed these guys are 50-60 ish. I hope I have that much when I am their age. I am sooo glad that they are still touring and still making music. Duty now for the future!

  • FIRST TIME SEEING DEVO

by GutterGirl on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't know what to expect. I was more than pleasantly surprised. Their voices are still intact after all of this time. Very entertaining!

These guys ROCK! After all these years, the band still performs with energy and enthusiasm throughout each of their songs. So much fun!

  • DEVO rocked, but....

    by Spudboy54 on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The warm-up band for this show really had me wondering what the person(s) who chose them was thinking! I'm very open to alternative music of many sorts, but I found the format very repetitive, clipped, and not mixed very well. Mostly blasted double-basses with clipped synth on top. Their drummer seemed the only one proficient with his or her instrument.

  • Are We Not Men?

by Notsew on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

No we are Devo, D-E-V-O. Most Songs were Fantastic, playing with full energy and well done. A few not so good, however, but worth it to slog through the bad!

I saw Devo just play an incredible, energetic, giving and loving set at The Warfield Friday night in Downtown San Francisco. Their energy, and love for their music radiated clearly throughout their two pronged set. The first half was songs that use keyboards, the second half was more of a stripped down prog/punk experience. They brought the keyboard back out for their encore, which was just amazing. I don't want to give too much away, but they just really, professionally, rocked it out from start to finish.

I think I have seen them at least 5 times and they never sounded better.

  • D R WE VO

by Zimm on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

This was the 6th time I've seen DEVO. Never disappointed. Always put on a good show, and Friday was no exception. I bought the new album or CD.. and expected them to play a good portion of it. It is a good album, but not one of their best. I was glad they only played 4 songs from it. I basically wanted to hear selections from their first 3 albums, which they hit on all 3. Was glad to hear Going Under, Planet Earth, Smart Patrol, Mr. DNA, Freedom Of Choice, Mongoloid, Uncontrollable Urge, and of course Jocko Homo.

  • DEVO's energy cannot be captured in a dome

by rensterindevoland on 8/11/10Northern Lights - Clifton ParkRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was petite, in a strip mall next to a warehouse with a church, so we knew a devolved night was in store. Hot dogs were on sale inside the Northern Lights near a pair of long bars extending into the area which faced the stage. The intimate setting was perfect for hardcore fans, newbies and press (bloggers?) to feel the pulse of DEVO's tight performance radiate within, even while standing still. Few failed to move with the music sets which pleased me more. Jeff Friedl, sitting in for Josh Freese who was on tour with Weezer, was spectacular on the drums. Hope to see him again in the future. New songs from their first studio release in 20 years were few and far between but that was to be expected given their significant catalog of audience favorites. Would I have traded "Going Under" for "Human Rocket" that night? Probably. I really do want to see them perform the entire new album. This show had no less energy than the back-to-back nights last November in NYC where _Are We Not Men_ and _Freedom of Choice_ were performed in full. That was novel and I hope the music industry leans that direction for future releases. Overall, the audience was a decent mix of costumed fans spanning the 70s forward to a gent in a home-made vest for 'Don't Shoot! I'm a Man' standing next to a young child in the red dome and knee-pads. Blue domes, gray masks and balding heads added to the diversity. VIP tickets allowed us access to the 'after show' which was very different than the VIP experience in NYC. The staff at Northern Lights was not well informed about 'the plan' up to and including during the show. Discussions with others confirmed the inconsistency as few of us were even offered the special sticker for the back room. Unfortunate for the DEVOtee collectors who participated.

  • Devo is da bomb.

by aZib on 8/9/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

DEVOlution is alive and kicking. The Ohio State Fair was lucky to have the Akron boys. One of the best concerts I ever attended and amazingly, even more entertaining than the fair folk.

  • Best Show I've Ever Seen!!

    by DEVOnow4theFuture on 8/7/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

DEVO has as much energy as they did in the '80s! I couldn't have been more impressed and thrilled to finally see them! I've been waiting to see DEVO since 1981 and never thought I would get to. I introduced my boys to DEVO 2 yrs ago, and they are as much a fan as I am. We drove 6 hours just to see the show, had great seats, and enjoyed meeting other DEVOTEES who showed up wearing Energy Domes and T's or radiation suits. I sure hope they plan on yet another album and tour! I'll be there!

  • DEVO still got it!

by LaterisNow on 8/6/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Great show, only four stars because of opening act. Good mix of old and new songs, use of LED display behind the band was cool, crowd was great and t-shirts didn't even cost too much.

  • kick azz show

by radiojambainternational on 8/6/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

from the skirt guy to the gal that said she was alright and was accompanied by paramedics of out of the venue , lets not forget the guy who was obviously tripping his azz off twisting the cigarette .. there was an obvious message to sociality, Lord willin and the creek don't rise the rest of you will eventually get it. Go See The SHOW..!

  • Loved it!

by Bsting on 8/5/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I had high expectations and Devo did not dissapoint. They are great showmen with theatrics, video and costume changes to back the great music. A good taste of the new music, but plenty of the old favorites to keep the die hard fans happy. And most importantly hard driving rock and roll eneregy the whole set.

  • Great concert with retro and new sounds

by tmccmh on 8/5/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Great visuals and vocals with new takes on old classics and new music as well.

  • Devo is timeless

by scottbgood on 8/5/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

the concert featured both old and new songs and had creative and humorous video to go with the songs. It was 1 1/2 hour set that was very high energy. Old favorites like 'uncontrollable urge" had the crowd rocking. Rocking music, satire, and social commentary. The opening act ra ra riot was pretty dull, I was glad when they finished.
