DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

Show was wonderul! Their voices and music are still as fresh and fun as they were in 1980! There were so many more songs I wanted to hear, but I was very pleased!

High energy from beginning to the end. I was amazed. Great music and a lot of fun. Our 17 and 15 year old kids loved the entire evening. Thanks for coming to Columbus.

GO see them before the tour ends! I don't think they could have been any more energetic 25 years ago!

  • Simply amazing

This was my first Devo show. I've listened to and enjoyed the band for the last 15 years, but had no idea what to expect from their live performance. My girlfriend and I were blown away. Their energy on stage was incredible. Video displays, costume changes, and a rocking performance, this was an absolutely fantastic show. The only down side was the $50 extra charge to meet the band afterward, which I couldn't justify. (That and the fact that my t-shirt size sold out. Damn my procrastination!). Anyway -- if you ever get a chance to see Devo perform, DO IT. Everyone owes it to themselves to catch the spuds in action.

  • All killer and no filler.

by Jevo on 8/5/10Celeste Center - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Like a runaway locomotive....these guys came out firing and continued to build speed throught the set. What you missed in all of the energy was the fact that DEVO was hurtling everybody back through a worm hole, a tear in the fabric of time.

  • Devo still rocks!!

The venue was small and it had an intimate feel, and the boys were in great form. They played a couple of songs from their new album, wish they played more of it. Pure energy came from that stage , they sounded so good and their digital screen behind them filled the entire wall which made a nice effect! If you ever get the chance to see them , go and enjoy. They sound better than ever.

  • DeVo is ReaL

by Lisadeva on 8/4/10Northern Lights - Clifton ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen Devo numerous times in NYC , it was puzzling why drive to Albany? Even though they are Ohio/ NYC has owned the DeVo through their aesthetics of De-evolution. Worth the 4 hour drive, Mark and Gerry and boys are into the music as much as they can be - humble abiding and complete'- Music was amazing from the new album as well as the oldy stuff that is written by today's standards. DeVo' Energy comes from the new maskies (Mark Motherborough's glasses fit on nicely) As I wore a blue energy dome at the rest stops along the NY Thru-way and no one blinked they thought 'oh its devo' I'm sure. THIS TOUR? RECOMMENDED!

  • Devo fan since the beginning....

by wackie on 8/3/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

My children's father & i used to have a "whip it" party every year starting in the late 70's to early 80's and on. One particular year, we decided to get married right in the middle of one, surprising EVERYONE, accept for our parents of course! We had 3 AWESOME kids, now 21, 23, & 26...all three love Devo too!! I flew to Atlanta from Texas to see this EPIC and nostalgic event with my 23 yr. old daughter, who is also a HUGE fan. These guys only APPEAR slightly older, but they still delivered one HELL OF A SHOW!!! (im not married to their father anymore, but we did purchase him an energy dome)!!

  • DEVO was great!

Great costume changes. They played everything! A++

  • They are so Devo

by Midiwiz on 8/2/10The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was just awesome. They played everything from Mongoloid to Don't Shoot. Devo was full of energy the entire concert. The venue was very nice. Although this was the loudest concert I've ever been too, the sound was excellent. We did a meet and greet and Devo was a lot of fun, and as nice as could be. I would do it all over again if I could. We drove 5 hours to get to the venue, and the concert was worth every minute of it.

  • Devo and the Black Lips at Chastain in Atlanta

by Gronlands13 on 8/2/10Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Black Lips were a very talented, upcoming band. Lots of energy, good and interesting lyrics and songmanship. Drummer is pretty amazing. Need to develop stage presence - but very good and recommended. Devo! Yes, it was very good and they are pretty amazing (even after all of those years). Go see them!

  • DEVO show, great fun, entertainment at its best!

by oldlou on 8/2/10Northern Lights - Clifton ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Terrific show! Crowd not too big, easy to get a spot where you can see everything. Great mix of new and old songs. They get better every time I see them (at least 10 times at this point.) I go each time thinking this is probably the last chance to see them, yet they keep on going. I love bringing new people to see them for the 1st time, they always leave surprised by just how excitingly great they are live. They remain true to their message and true to their sound. The new songs pick up right where they left off, old and new; every song sounded "FRESH"

  • Best concert experiance of my life!!

by devolutionisreal on 8/2/10Northern Lights - Clifton ParkRating: 5 out of 5

DEVO was awesome. 2 of the band members walked across the parking lot after they went to dinner and stopped to chat with the few of us who were waiting to get in. During the concert a large dude decided to rush the front and plowed against me and the woman next to me. Withing seconds a bouncer was there and told him to back off or he would get booted out. he settled down and went back into the crowd. Overall it was awesome.

  • Don't Shoot! (I'm A MAN!!!!!)

by mddonnellan on 8/2/10Northern Lights - Clifton ParkRating: 5 out of 5

DEVO was exceptional. The new stuff sounded 'Fresh' and the classics as tight as ever. The crowd ranged from kids and teens be people old enough to have been DEVO's parents. Full of energy and showing once again that they are great musicians as well as great entertainers.
