DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Fun with DEVO! Rock on, spuds!

    by Monkeypants67 on 3/28/11The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Great show! Songs and costumes spanning their entire career. The setlist was very good...I would only have changed a couple things. Crowd size was disappointing. However, those that were there were real DEVOtees. A lot of energy domes (both red and blue) in the crowd as well as some yellow suits, plastic wigs, etc. Big big fun. Only disappointment was post-show. I had done a painting of the band hoping to get it signed, on their way out of the venue, Mark spotted the painting and gave me the thumbs up and then promptly got into the van and split. There were only 4 people there wanting autographs and they wouldn't walk the 50 feet to us to do it. I've had U2 stop and open the vehicle door to sign stuff, so...y'know. Anyway, still love DEVO. Rock on, spuds!

Shows was awesome. Very heavy set list from Freedom of Choice which was cool. Bummed that not enough from the new album was play, but the rest of unbelievable. I have waited 25 years for this show and was not disappointed.

Well, now, old and stimulated with coffee only and accompanied by a similar friend, who has never seen DEVO, I say WOW!!! They still got! Great show, great sound,! Loud and clear and fun too! iT'S HARD TO FIND SUCH BRILLIANCE ANYMORE! THANKS SPUDS'.

  • DEVO Forever.

They told me DEVO was too old and it wouldn't be a good show. They were wrong. When they played Mongoloid (one of the best proto-punk songs of all time) I was transported to a wonderful world filled with pogo-ing lunatics. Thank you, DEVO.

I've seen Devo 5 times since 2006, including both nights last year in SF. This latest one, was easily the longest a(the previous shows, they only played about an hour, if I recall correctly- this one was about an hour and 30 min) and best show. Don't miss it!

  • Great band, really bad audio

by CainSound on 3/21/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Devo is a great band, and always worth seeing! The sound, however, was really bad. From my seats in the front section of the balcony, it just sounded PAINFULL! I usually love loud shows, but this was loud in a BAD way. They actually had a really good sound system... This concert had the potential to be exceptional, but was ruined by the mix.

The Warfield show was amazing. Great to see Devo doing new material of such high caliber. Love th enew record, new costumes, new videos plus the classic material. An amazing performance. If only younger bands were this good. The SpaceKraft afterparty held across the for the fans was outstanding.

by roberre on 3/21/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The Devo performance wt the Warfield on 3/18 was nothing short of spectacular. The guys are entertaining as always, neato screen displays for the newer songs (which rocked just as much as the ol' standbys) and great energy from the crowd and band. Thanks Devo and Warfield staff!!

  • DEVO is always awesome in concert!!!

by NastyNick on 3/21/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The show had an interesting musical band opening up for DEVO, called The Octopus Project. They were good to start the evening off with. DEVO kept the evening rolling along with "Don't Shoot: I'm A Man" and cool lighting show and a big gigantic screen behind therm. DEVO mixed some old n' good songs with the new songs from their recent album 2010's "Something For Everybody". DEVO ended the show with Booji Boy's rendition of "beautiful World.

  • Incredible energy!

  • Great Show!

by cinema on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing the band ever and I totally loved it!! Great merchandise was for sale. I had a nice meal at the venue before the show and then the band came on and played some of their new stuff and then lots of their older more popular stuff. The costume changes, background visuals/videos and between song banter was all very fun and made for a great show. I would definitely go see this band again live!

  • Devo was De-licous!

    by woody52 on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Ten times better than what we had expected. Going strong, and awesome as ever. Read the headlines today, and you can see these guys knew what's what back in the day. We are indeed de-evolutionizing. Voices strong and clear. Great energy for guys their age. I can't wait for the next time they are in town.

  • Devo was great as always

by bigbadjohnboy on 3/20/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great concert from start to finish. From their new material to their original classics, the performance was flawless. The selection of songs was top notch, and while I didn't get to hear every song that I wanted to, their set was representative of their entire history, without a bad song in the bunch. The only negative note was the person who covered the floor seating. His attitude was terrible, arguing with people, treating the crowd ( who were great) like they were imposing on him, and neartly starting several fights, If this is how the venue feels their customers should be treated, the band should consider some other place to play the next time they are in the bay area.
