DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

WE ARE DEVO!!! SPUDS were out in full effect and Devo was amazing as always. The 80s never sounded so good and I enjoyed hearing several tracks from Something for Everybody (latest album) and of course the classics! I was glad to see Josh on drums too! Too bad I will miss you at APC :( Thank You DEVO!

  • No de-evolution with Devo

by Spudburghman on 6/19/11STAGE AE - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Energetic and fun. Have not seen Devo since 1982. No drop-off in quality with these guys. 85 minutes of rip roaring music. New songs were good. Older stuff even better and they went through material from their first three records with fuvor. Loved the show. Won $150 at the casino aferwards. Good night all the way around.

  • Devo is better than ever!

Was not sure what to expect from the Devo show in Columbus. Even though my family and I are all huge Devo fans, I was afraid that they might be getting tired and showing their ages. Not even close! They put in two solid hours of singing and performing, while hardly seeming winded. Fantastic job guys. If you get a chance, do not pass up seeing them live.

  • Don't Miss Any Opportunity to See Them!

by ToothpickCharlieBassist on 6/18/11Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Truly Spectacular. I'm a longtime fan. They played with the same spirit and energy that they had 30 years ago. What a blessing that they decided to release another album (their ninth studio album, their first in 20 years, and maybe their best ever) and tour again. Every member of the group succeeded in making a strong connection to the audience - it may have been, at least in part, because it was a small-ish venue, but this group is phenomenal by any measure. My buddy who had never seen them before was utterly speechless. You can look at their videos all day on the Internet, but that does not begin to compare to the experience of going to see them for a show on this tour. It was a very well-thought-out and executed performance. The sound and lighting were excellent, and they had a video screen behind them for added visual effect. They did about five clothing/uniform changes as was appropriate to the songs - by either going backstage briefly, or by shedding layers onstage. I Must Repeat - Don't miss any opportunity to see them... the tickets were very reasonably priced, making this a terrific entertainment value, but would still have been worth it for much much more. Thank you, Devo.

  • AMAZING!!

by Simaetha on 6/18/11Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

This show was great. The guys in Devo still have so much energy after all these years and it was such a fun show to be at. They played some of their new stuff and their old stuff which I was happy about. They just seemed like they were having fun when so many artists who have been around for a while don't anymore. I would highly recommend checking them out if they come to your area!!

They put on an incredible, wildly energetic show. They encouraged audience participation and really nailed the music. It was overall a fantastic experience that I would advise anyone to partake in

  • Great sound and, of course, GREAT performance.

by litlgrey on 6/18/11Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

DEVO is now less the Pioneers Who Got Scalped and more The Grandfathers who BRING IT. As the second tour in two years in support of the same album, DEVO does what they have done for years... they span their career rather than focusing on one release. There is still nothing in the set from "Shout," "Total DEVO" and "Smooth Noodle Maps," but these remain the weakest of all their records. Still, I could do with "Wake Up Puppet Boy" or "Happy Guy" being revived. No, they are not capable of the physicality they brought to their classic agitprop performances of 1978, but what they can do, they do better than anyone else.

Terrific show in Pittsburgh last night. Those Beautiful Mutants from Akron dazzled, playing a nice mix of three of their new songs along with many of their classics. It was fun to see such an influencial 80's band in action again. I'm one happy Spud!

My wife and I saw Devo in Pittsburgh last night. We had a blast! They really put on a really fun and entertaining show! We didn't know all of the songs....but it didn't matter. Everyone in the place had a smile on their face and seemed to have just as much fun as we did. I would go see Devo again anytime!!

  • So much fun

by Heavenlymaker on 4/8/11The Warfield - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

As a young person I was too poor to go to concerts and no one in my high school liked Devo. Now as an adult I can afford to see the band I enjoyed so much as a youth. All the songs were great and it was wonderful to sing along with the crowd (we all know the lyrics). Yes the guys are old and their act isn't "fresh" but I still recommend to any DEVO fan. I was pleased to see how many people brought their young kids - new fans in the making.

If you have never seen them live, you must! Listening to their cd does them no justice. They are brilliantly amazing live!! Stage show was just incredible! I only wish they would have played longer. They still have it and might even be better than before.

  • At the top of their game

by GreetingsfromDallas on 3/28/11The Palladium Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Devo March 2011 and they had it going all night. Put so much more effort into the performance than I would have imagined with seven costume changes and great musicianship on their new songs and old, alike. Multimedia presentation worked well and production crew was spot on as the tight show had no technical problems at the Palladium Ballroom. In 2009, Devo played the same venue and performed "Gut Feeling" which I think is one of their standout songs though not included in the 2011 perf. American indietronica band The Octopus Project weathered some technical issues at the top to produce some of the best theremin tunes that Dallas has seen in some time. A great night altogether.
