DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Devo was awesome!

by Reyder on 8/6/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 5 out of 5

Devo rocked the house. They were so high energy. They sounded great. The background screen looked fantastic with the music they were playing. The songs were the same ones I've heard for years and mostly from thier earlier albums. It's dissapointing to go to a concert and hear music that you've never heard before but this was not the case. The entire crowd was so into it and the Mark Mothersbaugh was funny, energetic and brilliant. I will definitely be back to a Devo concert Tom tom Club was the slow part. Thier songs sounded the same and the crowd sat throughout thier set until they played Genius of love and two talking heads songs. The English Beat sounded great and played a good set but weere on stage for too short of a time. I thought they should be the 2nd band on the docket because they have so many hits in comparison to the Tom Tom Club.

  • wow they all were great! !

Awesome show!! I would see them again!! I was too young in the 80's to really enjoy the 80's. But I have always loved the 80's I try to catch as many 80's shows now that I can. And I must say this is one of the best shows from the 80's I've been able to see.

  • english beat and devo fantastic

  • What a GREAT night!

by sbarrett on 8/6/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 5 out of 5

English Beat, Tom Tom Club AND DEVO did not disappoint. All three had the crowd on their feet and cheering. They brought great energy and showmanship, definiting worth the price of admission... and then some. The venue is small enough were all seats are excellent. Right next to the casino floor, drinks are accessible via bar and roaming cocktail service (Elite Section) and several bathroom locations. If you're not ready to go home after the concert there's a nightclub (Pine's) where you can continue the party or the casino where you can try your luck at Blackjack and Slots (we won!) It was an hour and a half trek to San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino , but I would definitely attend another concert there.

  • Great Overall Show

by adbarnes on 8/6/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 4 out of 5

The English Beat was great fun and energy. They could played a little longer, but played long versions of their songs. Tom Tom Club started well slowed in the middle but great last four songs that included two Talking Heads songs, Take Me to the River and Psycho Killer. What a nice surprise. DEVO was amazing from start to finish. The lineup for energy reasons would have been better switching to open with Tom Tom Club. Although the clarity of music was amazing during DEVO, it could have turned down a little. DEVO is strictly unbelievable to be that powerful and full of energy. There are few bands present or past that can produce that much explosiveness and talent.

  • Devolution takes its course

by jimoreno on 8/6/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 5 out of 5

Devolution is still in force. There is nothing like the pulse of synthesizers in a concert setting. I saw the group in the early 80"s and they have not lost any of their exciting artistic ability to display their show in a manner of high energy from start to finish. If you like Devo and have never seen them, you will absolutely love this show. If you don't get Devo and you see this show, the spuds will show you what's what. This is the real tomato. The English Beat were surprisingly good. I don't remember them having such a ska vibe back in the day, I just remembered their cheesy MTV hits. Even those songs were presented well in the concert setting. I would guess that only the singer is an original member, that's my guess. The Tom Tom club executed well, but had a noticeably lower energy level than the rest of the bill. This only made Devo's high energy level seem a thousand times higher.

  • Line-up Change Was Only Thing Needed

by DJKent on 8/6/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 4 out of 5

Great show... DEVO still rocks! The only thing that would have made it 5 star is if Tom Tom Club would have opened and The Beat would have been second. Everyone knew every Beat song, but didn't know what was going on with TTC until 40 minutes into their set when they played "Genius of Love" and finished with a few Talking Head songs, including "Psycho Killer!"

  • English Beat was amazing, & Devo can still rock

by lbac on 8/6/11San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino - HighlandRating: 5 out of 5

All three bands were great. I am more of an English Beat fan; however Devo sounded just like they did in the 80's. I'm not much of a Tom Tom Club fan, but they put on a good show, especially at the end when they played a couple Talking Head songs!

  • DEVO - De-evolution is real!

by MyxVu on 6/20/11Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Never disappointed at the energy and musical ability DEVO has reflected - even in middle age - I can only recommend this tour. I was thrilled to see them only 10 months earlier at the Ohio State Fair last August, the first time I'd seen them since a Cleveland gig in 2006. The changes between that gig in Cleveland and last year's performance were night and day. The band looked fit, they played the classics perfectly, and it was a thrill to purchase new music from my favorite group during my high school and college years. I had high expectations from them, hoping for a different playlist, more of the later music from "Total Devo" or "Smooth Noodle Maps," or more from their latest "Something for Everybody." While I am always happy with "Peekaboo" and "Freedom of Choice" or "Mongoloid" and "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA," this show was basically a reset of the show from last August, almost song for song with a few switched in the set lists. The show began surprisingly early for a show at the "LC" in downtown Columbus (8:05) as there was no opening band...my friend and I barely got there in time (a call to the venue earlier in the day stated the show would begin no earlier than 8:30) "Beautiful World" - the bands standard encore and end of show tune since 1981 when it was introduced on "New Traditionalists," finished up at 9:37. While most folks wouldn't complain about a 90 minute show with little break time, with a rabid following and the ability to play at the venue until 11 PM, I expected a bit more (even with the light rainfall) for a $30 ticket and $7 parking. Don't get me wrong, the show rocked, and I thoroughly enjoyed it - I just expected more and would have enjoyed some variety. DEVO will always be my favorite...just mix it up a bit - there's always time out for fun! THANKS!

I last saw Devo > 29 < years ago. Had tickets for the rained out shaw last year. Were they worth the wait?? YES!! Coupleof sound-tech glitches, but for a band that has been around this long (since 1974), they "Do what they do" so well. Hope they come back!

Bought the VIP Meet and Greet! Well worth the money spent! Special section for the VIP Meet and Greet ticket holders. Was able to sit/stand front and center for the show and not have tons of people pressed up against us! After show met DEVO and got their autographs. The seats alone were well worth the cost.
