Detroit Red Wings History

Founded in 1926, the Red Wings are one of the NHL's Original Six franchises. The team has captured 11 Stanley Cup Championships, most recently in 2008, as well as six conference championships and 19 division titles. As of 2023, the Red Wings have the most Stanley Cup trophies of any U.S.-based NHL franchise. Eight Red Wings players have their jersey numbers hanging from the Little Caesars Arena rafters: Leonard Patrick “Red” Kelly, Terry Sawchuk, Nicklas Lidström, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel, and Steve Yzerman.

The Red Wings were purchased in 1982 by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who invested their family savings in 1959 to open the first Little Caesars store in a Detroit suburb.

Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena

The Detroit Red Wings have played their home games at Little Caesars Arena in the heart of downtown Detroit since the 2017–2018 season. Little Caesars Arena is an anchor of a world-class sports and entertainment district known as The District Detroit and received the prestigious Sports Facility of the Year award at the 2018 Sports Business Awards Ceremony. The arena's construction also gave the city of Detroit the unique distinction of having the greatest density of professional sports teams — the Red Wings, Tigers (MLB), Pistons (NBA), and Lions (NFL) — in one downtown core in the country.

One of the most exciting events of my life, to be there when they clinched the conference title. The entire crowd was into it and the Wings added to the energy level.

by godetroit on 7/13/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

What good be better the playoff hockey at the Joe? Notta a thing, the noise, atmosphere, and yea, the game!!! Picked up tickets at will call, the rest is history. Bought peanuts, now its beginning o'time and I pull out a triple inside the shell, tell the kids Wings will score one in the first three shots on goal. Sure enough on the third shot-GOAL!

    Excitement was the word!!

by Stillafanoshanny on 7/13/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Winning Round 2 home game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs was a must for the Wings in order to advance. Play was end to end and the game was close to the finish. Our seats were great and we could take it all in while shaking our Red Wings pom poms and chanting "Let's go Red Wings!" The last 3 minutes of the game the entire arena was standing and cheering. Awesome. The only way it could have been better was if it had been the Championship game with the same winning result...

    Red Wing Playoff game

by topgun6063 on 7/12/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Red Wing games are always great! I've have attended games since 1957 and the playoff games are always exciting. Whether the Wings win or lose; hockey is still the most entertaining sport's event. You can't duplicate the speed, ability and talent of a professional hockey game.

    Amazing "Original Six" Playoff Game

by GeneralLee on 7/12/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Until this year my wife & I had never been to a Red Wing playoff game let alone a Conference Finals Game. It was great to see 2 of the "Original Six" teams going at it. We really enjoyed ourselves & the atmosphere was electrifying. We plan on making this an annual ritual as long as "Our" Red Wings compete for the Stanley Cup!

    Wings rip Hawks

by Klutz on 7/12/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Joe Louis Arena, hopping with fans from Detroit and Chicago, was filled with pride that Sunday afternoon when the Red Wings pummeled the Hawks 5-2. The introduction, extravagant yet slightly tacky, opened the game, along with the wonderful performance of the "Star Spangled Banner" by Karen Newman, followed by the traditional toss of the octopus. What more could a Red Wings fan ask for? That wasn't the end of the excitement though...it was barely the beginning. The Red Wings played an outstanding game in the 2009 Western Conference Final, especially the Wings' goaltender Chris Osgood blocking all but two shots. This was my first experience at Joe Louis Arena and it definitely left a lasting impression on me. I would strongly recommend this event to anyone who enjoys a nice game of hockey.

    REDWINGS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by BigDog1031 on 7/12/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

I went to Game 1 of the western conf finals and that was my first ever NHL game. I loved it so much that I went back for game #2 and #7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It had to be great seeing it was a 12 hour round trip drive as I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin. I have followed the Wings for years and finally went to a few games. I will be going back for a few more games next season. GO WINGS. Mike in Milwaukee

    The Redwings were phenomenal

by jojeda on 7/12/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

The game was exciting from start to finish. They put on a great show before the game and made it fun for everybody. The Redwings never dissappoint me whether they win or lose, although they usually win. They put on a great showing. It was worth every penny and then some.

    AMAZING Wings Seats!

by mizrat on 7/12/09Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

The seats were amazing, the Legends Club was awesome. After the first period I actually felt bad for all the women who were in normal seats because I didn't have to wait for the restroom even once that night. The food was fantastic with everything from philly subs to stuffed shrimp to smoked salmon. I would definatly recommend everyone trying the Legends Club at least once if you can afford it - I think it was well worth the money, especially for a playoff game. GO WINGS!
