Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

    Electric Atmosphere

by Converted to Brand New Lions on 1/17/24

Ticket purchase was easy. Tickets were expensive but after waiting since Sharp caught the pass in the end zone from Favre to end it in the Silverdome. This Lions win gladly replaces that memory. I have never been to a game this loud.

    Great Show

    by LionsFan75Years on 12/19/23Ford Field - Detroit

I’ve been a Lions fan for 75 years and never lived in Detroit. My Dad was born in Flint which is why we rooted for the Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and Redwings. I’ve witnessed 3 of my beloved Detroit teams win championships but not the Lions. The crowd at this game was crazy and our Lions came away with a huge victory. The stadium is built with great viewing from everywhere. Can’t wait to see our Lions in the playoffs.

    Epic game & Epic Lines

by Lions on 9/28/23Ford Field - Detroit

First and foremost it was an amazing game and my family and I’s first ever Lions football game. We loved everything about it except the epic lines to get in. We were there early as advised but that still didn’t help. Then when my party got to the door the mobile device of the door agent was broken or something so it couldn’t read my tickets in my Apple wallet as advised to do, so I still had to log into my Ticketmaster account to pull up my tickets so the bar code could be scanned. I do think the signage could be better because we didn’t know which way to go to get to our seats, as to telling the numbers going up or down in either direction. Also, once you get to the escalator area it was confusing there too, we thought it was telling us to go up the escalator at first but we weren’t suppost too (219). I’m sure some is first timer mistakes but little tweaks could make all the difference. I also noticed near our section I couldn’t find any napkins either, so perhaps some extra dispensers would be helpful. If we were ever to get the opportunity to go again I would just make sure to have the family there by 10-10:30am this time and not 11am. Which is hard for a 2hr drive but I’d rather not miss kickoff again like we did this time. Music was good, entertainment was good, just a great and fun event plus the lions won, Go Lions!

    First trip to Ford Field

by Kevin from Roch NY on 9/22/23Ford Field - Detroit

Great Atmosphere, fans really into the game. A lot of food areas so you didn't miss much of the game. Some banter back and forth with fans of the opposing team but nothing malicious like I have seen at some other stadiums. We arrived about an hour before kickoff and the lines to get in Ford Field were moving very smoothly. DEFINITELY would come back for another game!
