Dermot Kennedy on Tour

Folk singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy has quickly taken the world by storm, rising from a small town in Ireland to release a number of charting singles as well as work with revered musicians and producers like Glen Hansard and Mike Dean (Kanye West, Travis Scott). In 2017, the dynamic performer went on the U.S. festival circuit and played Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo, making an international name for himself with his high-energy shows. The following year, he went on a world tour and played shows in the U.S., Australia and Europe, hitting Coachella and also playing an NPR Tiny Desk Concert after being voted NPR Slingshot Best New Artist of the Year. Kennedy's live shows flesh out his intimate tunes with a full band, bringing the audience fully inside his expressive songs. Kennedy's tour in 2019 took him across multiple continents as he incorporated tracks from his sophomore album, Without Fear, into his set.

Dermot Kennedy in Concert

Born in 1991 in Ireland, Kennedy was attracted to music at a young age, picking up a guitar at 10 and taking the plunge into songwriting a few years later, at 14. Before long, Kennedy was performing at open mics around Dublin; eventually he found himself busking — playing music on the street for money — in cities around the world. After high school, he studied classical music at the university level for a few years, but ultimately decided to pursue folk music. Kennedy's big break came when he won first place in a major upset at the South County Song Contest at St. Finian's GAA Club, putting him on the radar of industry professionals and singer-songwriters around the world.

After he self-published on Spotify, some of Kennedy's music found its way onto Discover Weekly playlists, which helped him get noticed by a wider audience. His first charting single, "Young & Free," reached No. 82 on the Irish Singles Chart, but his breakthrough came with 2018's "Power Over Me," which reached No. 10 on the Irish Singles Chart, No. 21 on the U.S.'s Hot Rock Songs and No. 5 on Adult Alternative. "Power Over Me" has since been certified gold. Kennedy signed to Interscope and, in January 2019, released his self-titled debut album, which hit No. 5 on the Irish charts.

  • His voice is as amazing live

by JLO on 6/24/23Freedom Mortgage Pavilion - CamdenRating: 4 out of 5

Dermot's voice was equally amazing live and did not disappoint. As for the entertainment experience, it didn't offer a whole lot. Glad I saw him, but probably a 1 and done.

  • STARTED VERY LATE

    by Anonymous235174654 on 6/23/23Freedom Mortgage Pavilion - CamdenRating: 1 out of 5

The opener was just an ok singer, but the audio quality had little to be desired as it was near impossible to understand what she was singing. The opener did not take the stage until after 8pm and performed for about 40 mins. Then we had to sit through a 30+ min break while the stage was reset and lighting was being focused. I've worked in the lighting/entertainment/theater industry for over 20 years, and I can say that it's rare for this type and amount of work to occur while an audience is waiting. Dermot Kennedy did not take the stage until about 9:15pm. This timing is unacceptable for a concert that was listed to start at 7:30pm on a TUESDAY night! Unfortunately, we left the concert shortly before Dermot started. We were not planning to stay for the entire concert, but we certainly expected to hear at least an hour of Dermot's performance. Because the audio quality was terrible for the opener, among other reasons, we weren't really interested anymore and decided to leave. Hopefully Dermot's audio sounded better than the opener. It would've been great if they had announced their plan to start so late, or let us know that there were technical difficulties, but we were left in the dark and very bored for almost 2 hours.

  • Show of a lifetime

  • Dermot was fantastic!

by Maura on 6/23/23Freedom Mortgage Pavilion - CamdenRating: 5 out of 5

Love Dermot Kennedy and saw him once before. This time completely blew the other concert away! Bigger venue allowed for more lighting and movement. The weather was beautiful and Freedom Mortgage Pavilion was clean and friendly.

  • Incredible

by cg on 6/23/23Freedom Mortgage Pavilion - CamdenRating: 5 out of 5

The man puts on an impressive show. His whole being echos in every word. Drummer is insane and love the bass players style. I know the music well but even those I was with who don’t thoroughly enjoyed the night. Not a bad seat there either.

  • Amazing

Dermot is an amazing vocalist, lyrical genius and puts on a great show. He sounds the same live & on albums. His shows never disappoint. The venue was clean for the most part, staff was friendly and helpful. Parking prices were a little ridiculous

  • Definitely would see again!

by Iva on 6/22/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Dermot Kennedy is an amazing artist. This was my first time seeing him live. Beyond amazing! He really throws himself into his performance and gets the audience participating! Loved when he brought the piano out for a few songs with some explanation of them. The lighting and video screens were fantastic. Small shout out to the guitar player rocking out hardcore!!

  • Please sit down!

by hjfcfo on 6/22/23Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga SpringsRating: 3 out of 5

Dermot Kennedy was amazing. Still hard to see him, though, from the 5th row center section 1 because everyone in front of us would not sit down. People are inconsiderate, only thinking about themselves, unfortunately. That said, the artist was amazing.

  • So special

by MKH on 6/22/23Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga SpringsRating: 5 out of 5

Been VIP to 3 of Dermot’s concerts and each experience was its own kind of fascinating. This one was so special in the acoustic set (?!?! Dude!), merch, q&a, and photo op. It’s so sweet to see the team and how their personalities influence how the experience goes. Everyone was awesome staff-wise. Sure, did we feel like cattle smashed into fences and hot small spaces with no ventilation? Yeah. But it was thrilling.

  • Absolutely amazing

by Ev123 on 6/22/23Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga SpringsRating: 5 out of 5

Completely blown away by the raw emotion and powerful vocals Dermot Kennedy gave. The crowd was much smaller than his previous tour venues but he performed as if it were the most important show he had. I left their feeling as if I had left the best therapy session of my life, he’s phenomenal.

  • Great Concert!

by Em D on 6/22/23Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga SpringsRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Dermot and he didn’t disappoint. Played a mix of older songs and ones from his album. He had great energy. Just wish he played an encore.

  • The DK Experience is fire!

by Melyssa on 6/22/23Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga SpringsRating: 5 out of 5

SPAC is a great concert location, and Dermot Kennedy's performance makes any concert location extraordinary. He's not like any other artist...and my third DK experience did not disappoint. The sound was great, the visuals were awesome, and the songs had everyone dropping into their hearts from the first note of "Blossom" to the last note of "Something to Someone." He invites you on a journey through the human experience, everything you've ever felt before, and a few that may be lived vicariously through the storytelling. When he urges, "Sing it!" he's really making sure no one has a passive experience. He's there with you the whole way. Some might call it "a concert"....but it always feels like so much more. He's a blessing.
