About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

  • Death Cab brings what noone really cared to hear

by Foolonthehill on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

I've been a fan of Death Cab for a decade ive listened to Tegan and Sara here and there over the last couple years and im not familiar with the new pornographers. Heres the deal the sound for the opening bands was very inconsistant and therefore irriating considering its the hollywood bowl and >50 for tickets. the New pornographers had really overpowering ear piercing vocals with little to none of the other instruments in the mix. Tegan and Sara were good but for them the vocals and music would simply fall out from time to time during performance. Lastly Death Cab was excellent however i was disappointed to look around and see that noone seemed to have any real connection to the songs or lyrics or really a good idea why they were there. The crowd was more pleased to see shiny fireworks than when they Played the classic Movie Script Ending. the Phil Harmonic is amazing in general but in this case didn't have much to add to death cabs very basic chord structures. All in all i wouldn't buy tickets to this sort of event at the hollywood bowl again.

  • Once in a lifetime experience.

by kerfuffle on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

We flew to CA from KS. When we saw that Tegan and Sara were playing with Death Cab we could not pass up the opportunity. We hadnt really heard anything from the New Pornographers before, but we found them to be delightful. The Hollywood bowl was the perfect location. The whole concert was amazing. The weather was perfect. The sound system was fantastic. I just cant say enough positive things about this experience.

  • Death Cab - amazing show

Having traveled across the country for the show i was hoping it would be worth it. and of course it was!

  • A-Mazing

by DeathCabFan on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I missed New Pornographers (I got there 40 minutes after the show started and they had already come and gone), but arrived as Tegan and Sara started their set. They were awesome! They got in a lot of songs because each of their songs is only 2-4 minutes long. They played for about 45min-1hr. Death Cab was ridiculous. They played for 1.5 hours and got in all of my favorite songs. They didn't play too much from Narrow Stairs, which I liked. They played plenty from plans and then a few from all of their other albums. Their finale of Transatlanticism was definitely unforgettable because they had the backing of the LA Phil and FIREWORKS! Sound quality is impeccable at the bowl.

by AnnaJD on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't know much of their music prior to the concert but mostly went because I'm a huge fan of the bowl and a friend wanted to go...but the show was AMAZING! Loved the combination of the band with the LA Phil and the fireworks! I've been to many shows at the bowl and this one is probably one of the most memorable.

  • Death Cab + LA Philharmonic = amazing

by IndieGroupie on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second time seeing Death Cab play, the first being in a small club, so i did not think they would have the same connection with their fans because of the capacity of the Hollywood Bowl. They played better than I remembered. Every song and chord was perfect! Then the Los Angeles Philharmonic played along with the band for the last 5 songs. WOW. It was amazing. Every ballad was more heart wrenching or heart breaking. The music felt more personal; it was beautiful. Great performance from both Death Cab and the LA Philharmonic - because of them I am giving the show 5 stars!

  • DCFC look & sound MUCH better on stage than on TV

by ictanrik on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Although I am a big fan of their music, DCFC performances I had seen on TV always had looked a little flat to me, and I thought Ben's vocals sounded a bit weak weak. Well... I don't think that way anymore. They put out a great show on stage. I was shocked by how much energy Ben Gibbard had throughout the concert! In the second half of the concert LA Philharmonic joined them on stage. Although the first half was flawless (except for a slightly mis-tuned guitar in "Sound of Settling"), the second part of the show had good and bad moments. Certain songs, like "Grapevine Fires" worked absolutely great with an orchestra. But in others like "Title and Registration" the orchestra seemed like an extra that hurt the song rather than helping it. The horns being too loud was part of the problem, since they covered Ben's voice in multiple occasions. The end of the concert was phenomenal, with DCFC and LA Phil. playing "Transatlanticism" accompanied with fireworks above the stage. This was definitely a sight to see. This song wouldn't have been my choice to end a concert, but it worked beautifully! However, DCFC stayed on stage for about 90 min, which I thought was too short. I would have much preferred seeing less of Tegan and Sarah (60 min stage time), and more of DCFC. Even the New Pornographers stayed on for only 30 min! The concert ended at 10:15 with no encores.

  • One bummer and two pleasant surprises.

by Daddylove on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I went with the hopes that the New Pornographers would rock as hard as they do on record, the weather would be nice, the Bowl would super as usual and the two "headliners" would be enjoyable. Of this short list I got everything excepting the first. The New Pornographers were pretty mediocre, reminding me of The Shins when they opened up for Belle and Sebastian. The venue seemed to big for them. Teegan and Sara were great and the Death Cab for Cutie guys were great. The LA Phil was completely unnecessary and added nothing in my mind, but overall a very nice/mellow concert.

  • Death cab equals sweet

by cdunlop on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Fun show, the L.A. philharmonic added to it and the fireworks were really cool.

  • Great Venue

    by bell1 on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I loved the hollywood bowl the outdoor venue created quite a different experience when watching the bands perform. As for the music loved it!

  • More than your average concert!

by Navilongo on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

This concert really ended up being high in my list. Starting with Teegan and Sara who are amazing performers and great people. Unfortunately I didnt get to see the New Pornographers because I was stuck in line. Teegan and Sara, which i arrived just in time to see, came on and performed their songs in a differently from which I remember them. They ended too soon for my liking. THen Death Cab came in striking high and low with the help of the LA Philharmonics, which honestly I could have done without. The philharmonics were playing OVER the sound of his voice, and it changed the mood of how they seemed to be playing their songs. The fireworks at the end caught me off guard but gave the show good closure. All in all, this concert ended up being more than your average concert. I would definetly come see them again in a hearbeat.

  • Death Cab at the Bowl

by rowzzzzz on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

I love the music, but "Live" the band lacks excitement. The lead singer was impressive playing guitar throughout and really getting into the songs. I will possess your Heart was great live and the firework finale was magic. Overall, the bowl is always a historic and memorable experience, but the rest of the band needs to be more entertaining for me to go to another Death Cab for Cutie concert.

  • A Great Show

by MiHeffey on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

All three bands played a great show at this post 4th of July musicfest. First time seeing all three of these bands and none disappointed. DCFC played solo for the first hour plus, took a small break and finished with about 6 or 7 songs with the LA Philharmonic. It can't be easy to play with 50 other members - no improvising here. The show ended with fireworks and "Transatlanticism." Very memorable. Tegan and Sara were a refreshing treat and certainly worth seeing at a smaller venue.

  • Death Cab History

by noliebro on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Sold out show with thousands of people. Truly the best concert by this once small band ever. The LA Phil did an amazing job at performing with the melody of the songs. The finale with Transatlanticism building to a fireworks show overhead was breathtaking and was a moment to be remembered for all of my life.

  • Time Discreptancy

by abulevan on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Most of the time, the Ticketmaster tickets have the door time at the bottom. I came in with four friends at seven. Turns out, the show started at seven. We were just glad that we did not miss Tegan and Sara and Death Cab for Cutie. The show was great. We wished there was more time for Tegan and Sara and their showtime banter, but what they offered us was great. Death Cab was amazing. The encore with the Los Angeles Philharmonic was amazing. Everything sounded great at the Bowl.

  • Brilliant

by whitetara on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The show was incredible. The New Pornographers were good and it was a shame that people did not give them the recognition they deserved....Tegan and Sara were fantastic in concert and very funny. Death Cab surprised us with a fantastic ending and the collaboration with the LA philharmonic added as extra dimension to their live music...well done. All in all an incredibly enjoyable experience.

  • awesome show

by poeticwarrior on 7/8/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Death Cab For Cutie is such a talented band. I came all the way from San Diego not to just see them, but Tegan And Sara as well. Both bands were intense. I had fun with my friends.

  • Death Cab for Cutie was magical.

by jharn on 7/7/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was a really great concert. The New Pornographers were a great opening band. And the fact that Death Cab played with the LA Philharmonic made the concert extra interesting. Really great concert.

  • hollybowl tegan and sara

    by kango1983 on 7/7/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The parking was a bitch and I wish their set was a little longer. Sara sounded wonderful...but Tegan was a little off on some of the notes. Would have been nice to hear at least one or two of their new songs from the up coming album. Over all the crowd was pleasent and everyone played well. Might drive the long drive to see Heista Prine? from northern state. Don't really know the band or her, but checked her out on you tube last night and she talented.
