About

A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he's always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN has struck a remarkable chord with audiences and critics everywhere, including The Washington Post who says DEAR EVAN HANSEN is "Theatrical magic. One of the most remarkable shows in musical theatre history." The New York Times calls it "a breathtaking knockout of a musical." And NBC Nightly News declares the musical "an anthem resonating on Broadway and beyond."

DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

  • Great show, powerful message

by Magz on 2/20/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Dear Evan Hansen was an excellent show! Amazing vocals, incredible staging, and a beautiful venue. Easily one of my favorite musicals I have seen with a powerful message that you are never alone in your struggles. Great show for today’s high school culture given that many teens today are experiencing anxiety and depression. This is a topic that should be talked about more frequently!! Everyone needs to see this!!!

  • I enjoyed the way very serious issues were presented.

Seeing DEAR EVAN HANSEN was truly an amazing experience. We saw a Sunday evening performance. Great vocals, a moving heart wrenching story that is so relevant and a beautiful cast. I would see it again! The mother-son scene was especially real for me.

  • Positively Surprised

by Milind Bengeri on 2/19/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't quite know what to expect. I had heard a lot about it, but didn't know what the plot was. I enjoyed everything immensely. The story was good, well told. IT balanced the comedy with the tragedy and the drama very well, and the singing was exceptional. Would love to see it again.

  • Phenomenal and Musically Addicting!

by Justin on 2/19/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Such an amazing production! The music is from the same composers that brought you La La Land and The Greatest Showman, and they did not disappoint in this musical composition either. Addicting music that is incredibly powerful. Casting for the DEH Tour was spot on and I could not have asked for a better cast than we had in Chicago. They were phenomenal. This musical is the best musical released since Wicked IMO, and is moving and powerful in ways no musical has ever been before. I highly recommend this musical and rate it as a must see. There is some language and topics of suicide so make sure your attendees are mature enough for these topics. It’s an important message that everyone should hear, that no matter how alone you feel in this world, you are not alone, and you will be found.

  • Loved this show!

by Lori on 2/19/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This musical tells a story that is socially relevant, funny and incredibly moving. (Bring Kleenex) The cast is wonderful but the standouts are Ben Levi Ross as Evan Hansen and Jessica Phillips as his mom, Heidi. Wow! From the opening scene, you immediately feel empathy for Evan and his mom. My daughter and I loved it so much that we bought tickets to see it again in 2020.

  • The Perfect Show!

Dear Evan Hansen is an incredible musical. The cast was flawless and the theatre was gorgeous. You NEED to see this show! I cannot wait to go again in the future.

This show was amazing! I knew I’d enjoy it. I knew I’d cry. I didn’t know I’d ugly cry and I didn’t know I’d love it. May be my new favorite show!

  • Dear Evan Hansen in Chicago

by wigginsray on 2/18/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Was very impressed with the production. From a staging perspective it was indistinguishable from the Broadway production. Cast was excellent - I saw the alternate Evan, who - quite honestly - was outstanding in the role. My only complaint had nothing to do with the production itself, but rather some audience members somewhat near me that felt they could record parts of the show with the phones and had to get yelled at. Perhaps a strong message prior to performance would help since the show attracts an older teen audience.

  • Best Musical I’ve Ever Seen

    by D. W. on 2/18/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The set design, the music, the acting. all aces. If you didn’t cry, I’m concerned about you

  • Incredible!

    by Stephanie W. on 2/17/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I was lucky enough to see the 2nd performance of Dear Evan Hansen during its run in Chicago. I am still trying to find the right words to accurately describe my experience. The cast was amazing! Their voices strong and beautiful, their emotions raw and real. The staging was unique and modern. The live musicians played the most moving score. I identified with many of the characters and was engaged throughout the entire 3 hour performance. They did a great job of portraying two families with very relatable issues and the consequences of their actions. I laughed, I cried, I wish I could have given them more than a standing ovation. It is a must see for everyone!

  • Best. Show. Ever.

    by L. S. on 2/17/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been listening to the soundtrack of Dear Evan Hansen for a very long time and was worried that the actual show wouldn’t live up to it. Well, IT DOES! And then some. Truly remarkable.

  • Excellent

by Tricia on 2/17/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This show pulls you in from the opening number and far exceeds what you think you might take away from a Broadway show long after it ends. I've waited a long time for Chicago to get this production and it was well worth it. Highly encourage others to take the opportunity to see it where ever it tours.

  • Beyond my expectations

    by Meggie65 on 2/17/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I had listened to the music since August....read the book when it came out in December and read the background of building up to the final Broadway package. Told friends, got tickets and planned for Valentines Day. The show put color and real people to the story. Wonderful. Would love to see again.

  • Excellent musical. Outstanding cast, especially Evan Hansen!

    by H. D. on 2/16/19James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The only negative was that there was very little leg room in my seat at the Nederlander Theater. Otherwise, extremely enjoyable experience.
