DE LA SOUL IN CONCERT:

Alternative hip hop pioneers De La Soul are back with a vengeance in 2014, celebrating the anniversary of their seminal 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising with the 25 Years of De La Soul Tour. Classic sample-based jams like "The Magic Number" and  "Me Myself and I" will be front and center as the band takes the stage in their signature throwback streetwear for career-spanning sets of their beloved hits. With a new album titled You're Welcome also hitting shelves in 2014, fans can expect to catch some never-before-heard material sprinkled in among their favorites at the group's electrifying live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason formed De La Soul in 1987 while attending high school on Long Island. Their playful, inventive 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising was a massive success, peaking at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and launching them to international fame overnight. The group's 1991 sophomore album De La Soul is Dead was another critical and commercial success, criticizing the increasingly violent nature of rap culture while still remaining upbeat with hits like "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" and "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'". A string of acclaimed albums followed throughout the '90s and '00s, bringing the band out on the road for numerous electrifying tours with acts like Modest Mouse and A Tribe Called Quest. Back in 2014 with You're Welcome -- their first studio album in ten years -- De La Soul has fans chomping at the bit to catch the new material live on their 25th anniversary tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"De La Soul put on a wonderful show, I felt like I was in a dream. The hype before the show was even exciting, people were taking things back to the old school by break dancing."

"De La brought it back to the times when hip hop was fun! Lots of energy, lots of classics! I Love De La Soul!! Awesome show!"

"De La Soul put on an incredible show and there was so much energy. Thanks to them for 20+ years of amazing music."

De La Soul - Real Hip Hop

by HipHopOldHead on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - Washington

I have seen De La Soul a couple of times previously. The 25 year anniversary show at the Howard Theater was by far one of the best hip-hop concerts that I have ever seen.I have seen quite a few. They rocked the building from beginning to end!!!!!

De La can still rock a show!

    by BigDog8 on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - Washington

I have been to several De La Soul performances since the early 1990's. Their music is timeless and has influenced numerous groups. Their performance at the Howard Theater was a good opportunity to witness "real" Hip Hop while it's still available. De La was on stage for a bit over an hour (too short), but that was expected. Also, I don't believe they performed a single track off their upcoming album. On a positive note, Maseo got the crowd jumping with a "tribute" to old school Hip Hop, including Tribe Called Quest. If you are a true Hip Hop head, you are doing yourself a disservice if you have never seen De La live.

    Timeless hip-hop

by musicman617 on 7/20/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

De La Soul was celebrating 25 years of music as a group and within a genre that doesn't have many groups that can boast this kind of longevity. Needless to say they didn't disappoint. The chemistry between plug 1,2 and 3 shows they are more than a group but actually brothers. It is this kind of commitment the comes across in their music and let's you know the daisy age will be here for another 25.

Stakes Was High at the Paradise this night!!!

by KingLouisV on 7/20/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

These guys seem to perform and get along better than ever. What a great show! The really appreciate the life a career in music has afforded them. Albeit a humble one when compared to commercially oriented jackasses that're all over MTV and whatnot. If u like these guys, make the effort to catch 'em live. Its well worth the $33 I paid!

    Great Talent Show

by areperiod on 7/16/13Howard Theatre - Washington

This Dilla event was extremely disappointing. "Artists" we'd never heard of performed 1 or 2 songs at a time in a round robin type order. There were a couple of exceptions like Oddisee and J. Sands. It was essentially an over-hyped college talent show. I was not entertained, more like frustrated and annoyed, especially by these female singers that tried to out do each other by hitting notes only perceptable by dogs and Mariah Carey. The DJ set by DJ Mick Boogie got people interested as he cut & scratched Dilla jams, but the electro-violin of Miguel somebody or another had most of scratching our heads. Bilal came out to cover Black Thought's spot in the rotation, but seemed to be grossly unprepared and improvised a bunch of freestyle singing. Ouch, my poor ears. De La Soul was the only positive- all 11 minutes of their 3 song set. Bottom line- not at all what I expected or hoped for.

    Underwhelming

by DCDilla on 7/15/13Howard Theatre - Washington

Almost 3 hours of music included just two numbers from De La Soul and zero from Black Thought (allegedly had another commitment even though he was on the bill from the jump and there was no indication before the announcement during the concert that he would not perform). So a $30 ticket ($40+ with surcharges) got you some B- and C-level hip hop acts and almost nothing from the "headliners".

I was very upset about Black Thought not being there. That was my whole reason for spending $100 on tickets and parking:(

Act promised did not show. Headliners performed 2 songs!?!? Poorly put together. Could have been an amazing. Tarnishes J Dilla legacy. If this is an annual event, I would not attend again and would discourage my friends from attending as well. Lets do better!

De La Soul is dead? At times, yes.

by daAmp on 9/13/12Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Okay, this is the second time that I have went to see De La. Both times the show started at 7:00pm and both times (and especially this time) De La Soul didn't come on stage until close to midnight. Then in this case they closed the theater at 12:30am. Dres from Black Sheep joined them on stage this time and he ripped it up. The problem is that De La's portfolio is so vast that they just scratched the surface in the minute amount of time that was allowed. That was disappointing. Also Mase knocked his laptop over and the music stopped for about 10 minutes. Wow. These guys are supposed to be the Hip Hop standard and they put on an amateur display. Big ups to Special Ed and Jeru, they kept the fire burning. PR and CL, uh, not so much and they were my favorites. Mick Boogie is one of the hottest DJ's on the planet right now. Keepers should always include him in their showcases. People should come out and support this venue.

    Ol Skool's Finest

by ScottyCoolBreeze on 9/4/12Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

DOPE SHOW!!!! Every act that performed ripped it. I missed some of Jeru's set, but he ripped it, Special Ed ripped it, Pete Rock and CL Smooth MURDERED it and De La bought it all the way home. Akron Civic Theatre was a sight to behold. it was definitely worth the 2 hour drive from Pittsburgh.

    Hip-Hop Showcase

by RandomX on 9/4/12Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Once again, Akron's Keepers of the Art (KOTA) put on yet another excellent, drama-free, awesome night of Hip-Hop!! The 5th Hip-Hop Showcase may have been the best one yet, and if not the best then definitely in the top 2! All original elements of the culture were represented: b-boying, mc'ing, dj'ing, and graffiti art (in the form of digital backdrop imagery while the artists performed). Great true school acts and each performed magnificently, especially my favorite group De La Soul! I have 2 criticisms, one small and one bigger. As awesome a venue as the venerable Civic Theatre is, this review would garner a 5 star rating if it were held in the Lock 3 pavilion as has been the case the previous 4 years. However, hopefully this will open more opportunities for more hip-hop shows at the Civic. Also, the After Party was pretty terrible-charging $15 for a party in a hallway is NOT the move! Other than those 2 things, this was a perfect event!

    FOREVA DE LA

by JaiWalk on 5/22/10Poolside At The Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas - Las Vegas

I loved-loved-loved the show. The performance was without a doubt, LIVE. De La Soul put on a wonderful show, i felt like I was in a dream. The hype before the show was even exciting, people were taking things back to the old school by break dancing. I support real hip hop, especially old school even though I was born just 2 years after De La began. Grown folks ask me "what you know about....?" I say 'good music has no age limit'. Great artists like De La Soul have been doing their job by outreaching. They have this certain vibe to them, that when you hear just one song - you know exactly who they are! that is hip hop.
