About

DE LA SOUL IN CONCERT:

Alternative hip hop pioneers De La Soul are back with a vengeance in 2014, celebrating the anniversary of their seminal 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising with the 25 Years of De La Soul Tour. Classic sample-based jams like "The Magic Number" and  "Me Myself and I" will be front and center as the band takes the stage in their signature throwback streetwear for career-spanning sets of their beloved hits. With a new album titled You're Welcome also hitting shelves in 2014, fans can expect to catch some never-before-heard material sprinkled in among their favorites at the group's electrifying live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason formed De La Soul in 1987 while attending high school on Long Island. Their playful, inventive 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising was a massive success, peaking at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and launching them to international fame overnight. The group's 1991 sophomore album De La Soul is Dead was another critical and commercial success, criticizing the increasingly violent nature of rap culture while still remaining upbeat with hits like "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" and "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'". A string of acclaimed albums followed throughout the '90s and '00s, bringing the band out on the road for numerous electrifying tours with acts like Modest Mouse and A Tribe Called Quest. Back in 2014 with You're Welcome -- their first studio album in ten years -- De La Soul has fans chomping at the bit to catch the new material live on their 25th anniversary tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"De La Soul put on a wonderful show, I felt like I was in a dream. The hype before the show was even exciting, people were taking things back to the old school by break dancing."

"De La brought it back to the times when hip hop was fun! Lots of energy, lots of classics! I Love De La Soul!! Awesome show!"

"De La Soul put on an incredible show and there was so much energy. Thanks to them for 20+ years of amazing music."

  • Hip Hop Awesome

by DeeZo on 9/1/09Bluebird Theater - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

This show was great from the head-liner to closing band. Energy never stopped, no lull in the beat, booty did not stop shaking. A venue that small with these bands is the ONLY way to do it!

  • De La Soul----From the Soul

    by Lips27 on 8/31/09First Avenue - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

May I preface this review by saying this is my favorite hip hop group to lay a track down. From the onset I knew looking at this show objectively would become an exercise in futility as I found my love for these three trendsetters rekindled by the first scratch from Maseo. This show was intended to celebrate their 20 year anniversary of the groundbreaking album, "Three Feet High and Rising". Celebrate was indeed their achievement, and they pulled the eclectic crowd in with them. They spanned their catalog with an effortless flow from song to song, as the three merry pranksters bounced their middle aged posteriors around the stage like a group of weed laced teenagers. Although never scared to confront a serious topic (see their 2001 album, "A.O.I. Bionix"), this show was purely for the light of heart, and feet. Staying still was as difficult a task as searching First Avenue's dingy lighting for where the herbal smoke scent was rising from. Plain and simple, De La Soul killed it. It was wonderful to catch up after many a year, and dead hair follicles, with three soulful "buddies".

  • De La ripped it...but I wanted more.

by LINUS914 on 8/30/09House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

Kenan Bell opened. He was different, but I was feelin' the beats and the lyrics. I purchased the CD and it was just as good. Great stage presence and he got the crowd involved. Maceo's artist is raw. He is true hip-hop. Raps with a message and/or a story. No 'Stanky Legs' or 'I'm a Jerk.' Finally a real hip-hop artist. I anticipate his album. De La Soul after 20 years is still rising. They hit on all the greats. Talked a little too much, but DAMN is was great to see them still together and still making music. I would never miss the opportunity to see a De La concert...and if you miss this...then you lose.

  • De La Soul ws pretty good!

    by trick11 on 8/28/09First Avenue - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

Fams of the group got a chance to hear favorites like Jenifah, Potholes and Saturdays and I am sure the many folks just our for a good time could recall songs like Me Myself and I and Ooh Ooh. Opening act was pretty weak and was kind of counter to the rap style of the group but the headliner did a good job.

De La totally ripped the stage tons of classic songs as well as the favorites....of course love the venue. In total I had a BLAST!

  • De La Soul was great

by ChiTown21 on 8/27/09House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

They definitely put on a great show. The band was awesome. I couldn't stand still throughout the entire show, even though there wasn't much room to really even move. For all of you real hip hop fans who remember when hip hop was a form of expression and represented the society's issues and difficulties of the time you will appreciate this show. It takes you back to when lyrics actually meant something instead of the garbage that is played on the radio today. A time when entertainers actually had to have talent to become famous....and these guys definitely have the talent.

  • De La 20+ years on

by scooparrilli on 8/27/09House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

De La Soul brought it last nite: eyeknow, saturdays, potholes, bizness, oooh, Feel Good Inc. & opened rhyming on The Clash's "Radio Clash." The encore also included a tribute to Run DMC. This performance was a major improvement on their appearance at Pitchfork Music Fest. Plug on!

  • De La Soul!

by LizTaylor on 8/26/09House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

The show was awesome! They sounded as good as they did in 1989! Kenan Bell was the opening band and they were great. I would have liked to have heard them play a bit longer. We actually talked to Kenan Bell after the show and bought a CD which I highly recommend.

  • De La - old school good times

by Zubin on 8/26/09House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

De La Soul is on their 20 year anniversary tour. The show was hot - kinda old school vibe - just straight MCing. Good to see Maceo comin from behind the tables and rocking the crowd with real energy. "Rock Ko.Kane Flow" and "Me Myself & I" got the biggest crowd responses. Openers were eh. De La kept the set short, but I guess that's how you keep the crowd wanting more?

  • De La Soul Real Hip Hop!!!

by Hannibalblk on 8/26/09House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

Great venue for hip hop! Really enjoyed the De La Concert can't believe it's been 20 years!!

  • Short but Not Really Sweet

by MusicListener on 8/22/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 3 out of 5

This event was fun but nothing special. De La was only on stage for about an hour - not long enough for the price of the tickets. Also, while performing most of their songs they stopped about halfway through, they would play a song for about a minute (if that) and then switch. Overall I was left unsatisfied.

  • De La Soul 20 year reunion!

    by DO34 on 8/20/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 3 out of 5

Real Hip-Hop was in da buildin'. However, it was pretty short. Bearly an hour of music. I know they are older, but I did expect more.
