About

DE LA SOUL IN CONCERT:

Alternative hip hop pioneers De La Soul are back with a vengeance in 2014, celebrating the anniversary of their seminal 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising with the 25 Years of De La Soul Tour. Classic sample-based jams like "The Magic Number" and  "Me Myself and I" will be front and center as the band takes the stage in their signature throwback streetwear for career-spanning sets of their beloved hits. With a new album titled You're Welcome also hitting shelves in 2014, fans can expect to catch some never-before-heard material sprinkled in among their favorites at the group's electrifying live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason formed De La Soul in 1987 while attending high school on Long Island. Their playful, inventive 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising was a massive success, peaking at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and launching them to international fame overnight. The group's 1991 sophomore album De La Soul is Dead was another critical and commercial success, criticizing the increasingly violent nature of rap culture while still remaining upbeat with hits like "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" and "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'". A string of acclaimed albums followed throughout the '90s and '00s, bringing the band out on the road for numerous electrifying tours with acts like Modest Mouse and A Tribe Called Quest. Back in 2014 with You're Welcome -- their first studio album in ten years -- De La Soul has fans chomping at the bit to catch the new material live on their 25th anniversary tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"De La Soul put on a wonderful show, I felt like I was in a dream. The hype before the show was even exciting, people were taking things back to the old school by break dancing."

"De La brought it back to the times when hip hop was fun! Lots of energy, lots of classics! I Love De La Soul!! Awesome show!"

"De La Soul put on an incredible show and there was so much energy. Thanks to them for 20+ years of amazing music."

  • So fun!

by IsaJ on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Great show De La brought mad energy, just wish it had been a longer show. It was a DJ from 8-9, then they performed from 9-10. That’s why it’s 4 stars instead of 5. But they were dope once they got on stage.

  • Venue is super cool, beautiful views of Stage, NY and NJ.

by Very satisfied Customer on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I arrives early, as to go through the entry process (i.e. long lines and search) which moved quickly and without incident. There are several escalators to take to the rooftop. Once on the rooftop, the view is stunning, there are tents set up for bars and food. The drinks was good but pricey and the food options varied/some good, some pricey (tacos). The show started late but once it started it was great to see and hear De La Soul and reminisce over the history of music the songs these guys performed. I really love the show, I would recommend it to others.

  • Hip Roof

Good smoothly night with sweet sound. Great place for partying.

  • De La Soul

by Birchwood on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was amazing and super new and modern. Drinks were slightly overpriced but what isn't these days. Sound system was booming and De LaSoul rocked the house. Even the blackout in Manhattan couldn't stop us from rocking out.

  • De La kicks ass

by CEEFAR74 on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

De La was epic. The venue is beautiful. Only gripe they legit pull the plug at 10:00 pm. Hard curfew. Too early for NYC.

  • De la in the House

    by L. D. on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

It was an great show. The opening act was out of place. Should’ve been a hip hop DJ. But other than that it was a great show. The sound system was clean and loud. Hope to see more old school hip hop acts their.

  • Everything I expected and more

by Talk mike on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The venue is fantastic perfect summer time place can’t think of a more picturesque moment when the band went on stage and the Brooklyn Bridge is in the background.

  • Band was lame

by D. on 7/16/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Really great venue, but De La Soul played for barely an hour. Would have given five stars if the band put on a show like it should have.

  • De la soul rocked the house

These guys know how to work a crowd. Old school never sounded better. Will see de la soul again!

  • De La Soul= Great - House of Blues Sound= Poor

by Shempdogg on 12/5/14House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 3 out of 5

De La Soul was awesome, but it just seemed like they didnt do a sound check or something. The House of Blues was not designed very well to see shows.

  • 25 Years and they haven't skipped a beat

    by ChipV88 on 8/7/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Having growing up with their music, there was absolutely no way I was going to miss out seeing De La Soul live. And man, they put on a show. If you love old school hip-hop, I highly recommend seeing them!

Really great show. So much good energy! Worth every penny.

  • Too short

by HKHustle on 7/23/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Waited for a while for De La to come on. They only performed about 30 minutes and then rolled out like they had another performance.

  • Hip Hop Is Not Dead

    by Shanie68 on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

These cats threw down so hard that it was easy to forgive them for being a little late. They were virtually non-stop. Their energy and the crowd's energy mingled to make the roof pop off and slam back down. Their love of hip hop, for what they do, and for our community is as evident as when they first started in the game. Their skills demonstrated why they are still in the game. Besides the entertainment value, this concert should have been recorded as a training for all the wannabes--wanna be famous, wanna be a Gangster, wanna be paid--and all those other wannabes who make us even ask the question, "Is hip hop dead," and those coming up who think they know what hip hop is based on the wannabes. If the venue had been a dry venue, I would have brought my children and told them to sit back and learn.

  • Hip Hop is still alive and well!!

    by Garveyite33 on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

De La put on an amazing show, as they ran down all of their top hits starting with the first album.

  • Awful performance

    by OldSchool24 on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Venue was perfect! Da La Soul was whacked. I will not purchase tickets to see them again. They were late to the stage. The first act was entirely too long.

amazing performance, great energy and a set list that included new and old stuff.

  • De La SOUL - timeless jams in a HOT venue

by DiDiMD on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The musical memories came flooding back as De La SOUL took the crowd through all the monster hits. The crowd responded en masse with a clapping rapping sing-along good time had by all. The only drawback - the Howard Theater heated up like a big ol oven! The A/C system was laughable in that place - we baked like potatoes in there. Thanks to De La SOUL for a jam filled trip down memory lane!

  • De La Soul Killed It!!!

    by Nic321 on 7/22/14Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was AWESOME! The crowd was way into it...and they did all the songs I needed! They started on time (opening act), and I wish there had been a dj before until at least 10 and the show started later. I wanted to make an evening of it and ended up leaving at 11 to go to U St.
