Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

Even though I was sick that day we went to the game and had a good time, our seats were behind the goal, we liked the atmosphere, the game was exiting to watch especially the dunks and Kids passes and the most important thing its that the mavs won. Go Mavs!

The seats were great, and the game was awesome(with the exception of Dirk getting ejected). This was my first game at this arena and I am looking forward to enjoying many more. The atmosphere was perfect.

  • Awesome & Great Seats!

by Anonymous on 3/24/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The seats that we had were great, in Section 123, couldn't ask for better seats for the price we paid. I took my mom and 9 year old son and they both had a blast and it helped that the Mavs won. Go Mavs!! I will definately go again and get tickets in the same section it is worth the price.

  • Dirk was ejected from the Game. . .

by MarQuisofDallas on 3/24/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Our Mavs r impressive and they Sure need Dirk through-out the entire Game. Our huge lead was lost once Mr Nowitzki could no longer play due to an unnecessary ejection . . . BUT a Home Game Should Never be Missed, the American Airlines Center has a very uplifting environment ! ! ! ps THEY STILL WON . . .

by NanTX on 3/24/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was my very first time to see the Mavericks play in person and it was unforgettable. Being in the AA Center, seeing the players in person, being part of a wild supportive crowd made for a night of magic.

Outstanding event, the game was great and the seats were outstanding considering the price paid for them!

  • Mavericks played an incredible game without Dirk

    by Ruth1127 on 3/24/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The Mavs are a great team. They managed to pull of a win without Dirk. After Dirk being tossed out of a game which was totally uncalled for. The boys pulled themselves together and played an incredible game to win big!!!! Go Mavs!!!

  • Maverick game and venue always awesome

by BballFanGrapevine on 3/24/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Mark Cuban always knows how to put on a show. Even though Dirk got ejected in the third quarter for arguing the Dallas Mavericks did not disappoint by turning up the heat in the fourth and getting the crowd riled up. Even though this was against the Clippers it was a great game to see.

    by Lexus1115 on 3/24/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

You just cannot beat a Mavs game at the American Airlines Center! Awesome seats a stone's throw from the Mav's bench and Mark Cuban's perch....which is always a blast because he gets so into it. Jason Kidd was on FIRE for his 37th birthday...totally stepped up and was a leader on the floor after Dirk got ejected early in the 2nd half. AWESOME game all around!! Ticketmaster always delivers!! Thanks!!

I hate the fact that Dirk was ejected out of the game too early into the game.....he was doind a great job....but leave to the idiots to kick him out way too early... but then we got Kidd and Terry that stepped right up!!! GO MAVS!!
