Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

That was our first Mav. game and it was awesome, the arena was so clean and everyone that works there is so nice and friendly. It was cool how the people came around to us and asked if we would like something to drink or eat, you usually have to go yourself. It was my sons 18 birthday and he and I both had a great time, we will definitely be back.

  • Great game!!!

Even though Dallas lost, the game was close to the end, the Mav dancers, the mascots, the noise, the fan excitement ... it was all great!!!! Nothing like a live game at the AA!!!!!!

Anytime you get to catch a great game with your family from out of town its going to make for great memories. My family are Celtic fans and they did not disappoint. One of the greatest times of my life.

Celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a Mavs game. I really wanted to see D. Rose play but he sat out due to an injury. I had great seats and it was a great game, and my overall experience was great.

  • Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics

by dannos on 3/21/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Very nice performance. My nine year old son loved all the flash, sound and extras. The DART train makes it less stressful, and easier. We wish DART would run out to Arlington.

  • Great Game!

    by CelticsFan10 on 3/21/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Although they played a great game overall, the Mavs were no match for the Boston Crew. With Ray Allen making his infamous 3's, it was obvious that it was going to come down to who wanted it more. Overall it was a great game!

  • Nice game but extremly expensive!

by Ferlace on 3/19/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Great venue, the American Airlines center is one of the greatest arenas to watch baketball, the whole time was entertaining but extremly expensive tickets for the distance where we were, we coulbarely see the other side of the court.

  • The Mavs lost but it was still lots of fun!!

It was my 1st time at a Mavs game & it was a great experience. It would have been cool if they won, but all in all it was fun. And printing the tickets from ticketmaster.com was real easy!

My cousin and I attended the game last night and we had a blast!!! I used to work @ the AAC, so that coupled with the fact that I love the NBA I think I had entirely too much fun!!! I can't wait to go see many more!!!

Had a good time as always. Mavericks had me worried for a little in first half. Nets was on us, but as always Mavericks came back and rocked it.

  • Go Bulls

by reesun on 3/18/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Overall it was an OK game till 4th when Chicago decided to come back but JJB decided to put the dagger with few 3s. Being a Chicago fan, I was disappointed to see few of the Bulls Superstar not play due to injury. Besides that it was a good event for me. OH I have to mention one of the attendents there from our section asked us to move close to the tunnel where the Bulls players go in by the end of of 4th Q. That was very nice of her to see us Bulls fans and ask us to go there so we can have a close look at the Bulls players.

  • Loved the game

    by TheBoss23 on 3/16/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I really had a lot of fun. I haven't been to a Mavericks game in about ten years. It was so fun. I am only disappointed that I didn't buy tickets earlier in the season. I have a son who would love to see some games. We will be back next year!!! Oh, and parking/traffic was a breeze...that was a plus!
