Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Mavs & Thunder Game great

    by Timmy21 on 4/4/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Very good game even though the Mavs lost. Mark Cuban knows how to give the fans a bang for their buck. Enjoyed the free refills on sodas & popcorn.

by TKKTK on 4/4/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The Mavericks started off strong at the beginning then lost luster during the 2nd and 3rd quarters then started making a comeback in the 4th quarter. We wanted the Mavericks to win but it was a close game and it looked positive for the Mavericks for a moment until Oklahoma City Thunder scored those points at the end. We had a great time!

There es nothing bad to say about the American Airlines Center and the Dallas Mavericks... even do they are not my favorite team it was the best i had been 2. Anyone that has the chance to go, should. There is also so many other things to do in Dallas like, the Stock Yards, Golf, Grapevine Mill Mall, The Heart of the city Town Square.....etc......... they also have great transportation like the ECO LIMO service and its very cheap and affordable for anyone. OVERAL GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!

  • Had Fun!!!

    by sem432010 on 4/4/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

I had a great time, I took my nephew for his birthday, I loved the fact that his name was announced for his birthday… that was AWESOME..the game was great but one thing I am not happy about is that we arrived 2 hrs early to see if we can see some of the Mavs players as per your website states. It states is not guarantees that we will see our favorite player but it did not say that they will NOT come out at all.. we went waiting to see if one at least would come out to greet or say "Hi" to their fans and they did not do such thing.. the other team, the Thunders came out and greeted the kids and all of their fans BUT the Mavs never did.. this is NOT the first time they don’t come out at all.. this was very disappointing, do to the fact that Kids come out here to see them or try to take a picture and they never come out..that is sad.. people pay a lot of money for tickest and for the Mavs (at least one or two players) not to take 5 mins of their time to come out and greet at least the kids is very sad!!! :-(

  • DWIGHT HOWARD is a MANCHILD!!!

by StokesBoy on 4/2/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Great seats and great action! Amazing view of the action from almost center court! Any game on TNT is worth paying $325 a ticket when you get to watch a star studded cast of Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard! It is a shame that Shawn Marion has fell off the map, but it didn't take away from the game! Mark Cuban does a hell of a job with the presentation for the Mavericks games! He really puts on a show on top of the show! Great cheerleaders, great halftime entertainment, and great food! I will be coming back to the American Airlines Center and even though I am a Houston Rockets fan, I must give the Mavericks props! Well don, Mr. Cuban, you give me confidence that the sports industry will survive! A thrilling TNT event, eventhough Dwight Howard dismantled the Mavericks! Dwight Howard is such a beast and with Lebron James, should be the next poster man of the NBA. He was hilarious before the game and the Orlando Magic definitely have fun playing basketball. It was great to see. The Mavericks need some work! Great event and David Stern is lucky to have Dwight Howard in the league. He puts on one hell of a show!

  • Great Night

by GPISDFan on 3/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great night to bring a fellow coworker, who was from Denver by the way, and see a great performance by the Mavs. Dirk's triple double was a masterpiece to watch. The overall defence was great and there was no let up in the offensive side of the game either. The AAC is a good place to watch a game, hardly a bad seat in the house.

  • Mavs were awesome!!

    by shibs27 on 3/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The event was well organized and was on time. The screen in the center was very good and clear. However the halftime show of dogs catching freesbie was a little novice and considering the importance of the game with Denver Nuggets a better show could have been organized Also this was the first game after the Dallas Mavs confirmed their place in the playoffs hence the startup could have been made extra special with some fireworks or something else.

  • Mavs and Nuggets!!

    by BB2010 on 3/30/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Well thats was the best fun me and my wife had at our first Mavs home game, its was very exciting and we were thrilled. Go mavs. Great seats for a really great price.

  • The new video was great! Thanks!

    by MavFan53 on 3/30/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I thought the game was exciting. The crowd in my section (322) was great... we like to yell and get rowdy! I missed JJ. RB was good, but he's young and learning the ropes. Dirk was worth his fat salary, Kidd is a rock, and we are reeping the benefits from the last trade.

  • Totally amazing

by MaxieMav on 3/30/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This game wasn't in my ticket plan with the Mavs. Those seats were amazing and so was the victory. Go Mavs
