Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • BIRTHDAY SURPRISE!!!

by SheWill on 12/11/19American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

My husband loves the Dallas Mavericks and since he has never been to a game I decided to surprise him with tickets to the game with the opportunity to be on the floor before the game started, he was outdone, he couldn't believe it. Even though he enjoyed himself he was disappointed that he couldn't say anything to the players or get an autograph or even take a picture with his favorite player. If there was anyway to provide a better experience on the floor before the door it will make a lot of people happy. Thanks for the opportunity to leave a review.

  • OVERWHELMING!!

by Ribeye on 12/10/19American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great. We demolished the Pelicans. It was my husband first NBA game, so i took him for his bday. He LOVED it!! Ppl bought him drinks and took pictures with him. The only thing i will complain about it that the seats need to be a little bigger for XL ppl. It was really tight and uncomfortable. For the price we pay for tickets, them seats need to be wider and spacious from one another. Not alot but we barely had elbow room. Overrall the game was AWESOME!!!!

by Kennedy on 11/23/19American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

It was literally the best experience ever!!! Being able to sit on the floor, to going to high five the players, to going up to the platinum section for the whole game was amazing!! I enjoyed the staff around each and everyone of them had such high energy and they were just as excited to be there as I was!! Thank you thank you!!!

  • Hate the entertainment changes

    by L. S. on 11/21/19American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

I do not like the new entertainment. I also don’t understand why you would get rid of the Mav Dancers. These women enjoy what they do and also need jobs.I think that the Maniacs are ridiculous and very offensive to us larger people. My husband and I have been attending several games per year with my grandchildren for over ten years. We DO NOT like most of the changes that have been made these last few years.

  • Great atmosphere; sorry we lost.

by Terry on 11/11/19American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The only thing that i found bothersome was all the traffic in and out while the game is going on. Made it hard to see the floor. I paid for first bowl tickets so I could see the action better, but the traffic in and out was very heavy. I thought that in the past people only exited and entered the area during breaks in the action in the lower bowl.
