Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

It is always exciting to go to a Mavs game. Besides the seats being so tight, it was fun. The guy behind me had a noise maker. He was heating it on his knee the entire game. His knee was practically shoved against my ear. I thought my ear would be permanently damaged, but it wasn't. I lived.....

by ADPJ on 1/5/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was clean and staff was friendly. The seats was small and tight, but we could still see the court well from where we sat. We plan on attending another game at that venue.

  • great game but parking was an issue

    by P. Z. on 1/5/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Mavs game was great but bought a pass to yellow lot which wasn't open at 545pm. had to pay extra cash to park in silver lot. Save the money on the parking pass and just pay $25 to park in silver.

Our entire experience was very good. Had an easy time getting into the stadium- the staff was very friendly and helpful in locating outer seats. Our seats were roomy enough and comfortable and viewing was excellent. The stadium atmosphere was lots of fun and we had a great time watching and cheering on the team,

  • Great game

by Missy on 12/17/19American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed the game. He’s a Heat fan and I’m a Mavs fan. The only thing I could say that maybe could use improvement is let room. We sat in section 301. My husband is a disabled veteran and he really had trouble being able to get comfortable. I wish there was an option, and maybe there is but I just am unaware, that disabled vet could have the option to pick an end seat or have access to a seat with more room for the same price. Next time I probably just need to call when ordering tickets and ask about those options.
