Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Great Game Horrible Parking

    by Pudding 1 & 2 on 3/7/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Great game, the venue staff was professional, the crowd was hyped and it was truly a fun night out with the hubby. The only complaint I have is the PARKING! We missed the first half of the game trying to find parking. My hubby and the fans went wild watching the Mavs and Pelicans ball into overtime!

  • LETS GO MAVS

by pentaholic on 2/27/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

People don’t usually enjoy the seats that are at the very top, when in reality they are just as enjoyable as those on the bottom (although court side is pretty cool). It’s as fun as you make it! You can still see the jersey numbers and the ball just fine. The Mavericks had a great win and I will definitely be going to more games in the future! GREAT WIN

  • Good Game - Heavy Drinkers Next to Us

    by Olaf45 on 2/4/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The game experience was good overall. We did not realize that our tickets were in the pre-game autograph area of the stadium and were not prepared for the fans falling over us to get autographs. Early in the first quarter the gentlemen sitting next to us arrived and were drinking heavily. One gentleman stood up the majority of the game blocking my view. All-in-all a decent experience, not great for my first visit to the American Airlines Stadium.

  • Great time but game a thud

by AJ on 1/31/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Overall experience at the Mavs game during Chinese New Year, however the Mavs laid an egg. The team just didn’t show which was disappointing because crowd tried to get behind them, but they gave us very little to cheer.

  • A lifetime experience!

    by L. A. on 1/24/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Was a great overall experience. The floor passes could be more interactive. But we enjoyed ourselves overall.
