Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • On and Poppin'

by TBone on 11/9/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The wife and I had a great experience. We enjoyed everything about that night starting with the train ride to the stadium. We thought it was going to be chaotic with the crowd getting inside, but it went very smooth and quickly. The fans were explosive and very exciting. Our section 314 was very loud and hype. We will definitely be going again real soon.

Game winner 77 was so glad I got to see in person.

  • Amazing game, awful food

by Ss on 11/9/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The game was phenomenal! Great atmosphere, good music, clean, nice people. The food was so so bad.. if you can get Poke bowls at a monster truck rally in Kansas City I would have expected much more than burgers from a bag and plastic pizza in Dallas TX

  • Greats seats, terrible vending options

by Geoff on 11/5/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

100% ridiculous covid testing policy to access the event caused huge lines to enter and delays to see the game. We loved our seats and the view in the “Platinum” section 223. There was a barcode to scan for food options. Only one problem - no service was available for our section. So we had to go out to the one and only vending section for the entire platinum section for burgers and tenders. Huge line, the staff wasn’t prepared for the crowd. I had to then run out of the “platinum” section to main floor for food causing a significant delay. We paid extra for the “platinum” section which should be in seat vending which was not available. That should have been communicated. I’ll never pay extra for this section again.

  • Mavs vs Heat

by Michelle on 11/5/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I was so happy to be there to support my boys and for the entertainment of the audience. While we did not win, that’s okay, we are just warming up and figuring things out. So glad to be back at live basketball games, it was fun!

  • Worth It

by Timo on 10/30/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Event started on time, court was clean, and everything was in order. My only criticism is about food choices and quality. I only saw hamburgers sold inside the court and they were terrible. The fries were worse, and it was expensive

  • MAVS WIN!!!

    by 77LukaSkywalker on 10/29/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

A Mavs win is always a good time, especially against our interstate bros/rivals, those dang Spurs!!

  • Didn’t attend

    by S. C. on 10/11/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

Due to receiving Covid policy the afternoon before I was unable to attend. I am vaccinated but the others attending weren’t and didn’t have time to get tested and receive results. So I was forced to donate my hard earned money to a billionaire team owner and millionaire players. Cause I also didn’t have time to try and sale the tickets and no refund policies.

  • Didn’t know this was a preseason game

by Alex on 10/9/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

When I bought the tickets there was no indicator that this was a preseason game. Also a few days before the event they implemented the covid safety requirements and while I am vaccinated, the people I was going to go with were not able to secure negative tests in time. We couldn’t exchange our tickets and weren’t able the attend this event. I wish Ticketmaster would indicate which games are part of the preseason.

  • Great Time!

    by B. B. on 3/14/20American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We rode the Dart train, and it was very convenient to the American Airlines Center. Getting in and out was very easy, and the attendants were very helpful in directing us to find our seats. We ate at a burger place there, and the food was good for a sports event. We enjoyed the entertainment during the breaks. Overall, we had a great time. It had been several years since we last went to a Mavs game, and we really enjoyed it. We're very glad that we went when we did, since it was the final game before the Coronavirus suspension. Hoping the season resumes and the Mavs can put it in high gear for the playoffs!
