Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Super bummed

by MOgg on 12/26/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

We purchased tickets to see the Mavs play the Bucks on Dec 23. My 13 year old son follows basketball and LOVES Giannis and the Bucks. We decided to take him to an NBA game for his big birthday gift from us, and he picked this game. He had been waiting almost a month and was so excited. We couldn’t afford close tickets, and got seats up pretty high (this was not a problem though, the seats were still great. Although, there was a guy who was in them when we got there and he kept moving around to different seats in the area. It was clear he wasn’t in his ticketed seat). The morning of the game, we find out that ALL off the big players for both the Mavs and the Bucks were out. No Luka, no Giannis, no Hardaway Jr, no Burke, no Kristaps… heartbroken doesn’t even cover how my son felt. Going to do these kinds of things is not something we can just decide to go do. We live 3.5 hrs away and ample planning went into this night. It sounded like the Mavs had to scramble to have enough players. We still went and it was fun, but it wasn’t what we were wanting to give him for his birthday now. There was a bummed feeling that lingered. We would love to come back and try again, but the Bucks don’t play in Dallas again this season. While I understand that some things can’t be avoided, especially when it comes to Covid safety, we are now hearing how the COVID protocol wasn’t the real reason some of the players weren’t there-(Giannis in particular). Giannis is his favorite player, he wanted to see him play in real life. We paid money to see him, and found out the day of that he wouldn’t be there. No refunds offered since so many players were out. I would love to try to take him to another game sometime, and hopefully it won’t be such a let down.

We certainly enjoyed the game and entertainment. Very memorable evening on Christmas Eve Eve.

  • Great seats and a W!

by Elle dawg on 12/24/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first game since the pandemic and we had a great time! Not nearly as uptight as I thought it might be. These seats were perfect as well. I’m not a fan up the upper level, per se, but these seats were the lower part of the upper level and row A was amazing! No one’s head in the way, no seat in front of us. Can’t beat it!

  • My man and I attended the game.it was my first NBA game.

by Sheloe on 12/20/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The stadium environment was very professional for a great date night.

  • Awesome atmosphere

by LB on 12/18/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Most of everything was great. Seats need to be wider, felt cramped. Ushers should discard trash, or have trash cans close by if we are sitting close to the court.

  • It was the best game ever!!!

by Rachel on 12/18/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

It was such a close game all night. But we really loved how AA would put the cameras on the fans and we'd see them on the big screens.

  • Best Game Ever

by Taboo on 12/18/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This game was like watching the NBA finals 💜 The only negative that I have is that the workers in the arena were rude to us because we were for the Lakers. They shouldn’t show their personal beliefs to the fans. Other than that, we had a great experience!

  • Great early Christmas gift

by Hunter on 12/18/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I took my little brother as an early Christmas gift and it was so much fun. Our seats were up in section 301 but the view was perfect.

by Nikki on 12/18/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

It's not my first time going to an NBA game so I came extra early to fight thru traffic and make sure i saw warm up and everything lol. Parking was easy expensive of course and getting inside was effortless. I enjoyed the game and i appreciated that there were people to help u find ur section. The game went into overtime so hey it was an overall good experience.

  • It was a good game!

  • FUN

by JJ on 12/11/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed the game & the entertainment in between quarters & at halftime.

  • Mask requirement

    by L on 12/10/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The mask requirement is not enforced at your seat. People walk around without the mask once they’re inside the arena. Staff should do a better job of enforcing that rule especially with everyone being so close.

I really enjoyed the game. I had great seats. I went with my son and friends. My son was on the edge of his seat during the entire game. I will definitely be going back to a game.

  • Took my kid’s to their 1st game. Luka and KP didn’t play. Wa

by Disappointed dad on 12/7/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

I saved money and bought tickets way in advance to a Saturday game so I could take my kids to their 1st Mavs game ever. And on a Saturday night both Luka and KP don’t play. Team is complete trash without them. Wasted $500. Never again

  • Good vibes only

by AuntieAlly on 12/2/21American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The lines to get in moved pretty quickly and employees had masks for those that forgot one. The only thing I didn't like was the baskets you put your phone and keys in...aren't disinfected between use so unless you have your own wipes, you've got other peoples germs on your phone and keys. The space was clean and even though the Mavs lost, it was a good game and experience.
