Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved.

Their win totals increased in each of their first four seasons. Led by Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star, they reached the playoffs for the first time in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the Miami HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to three straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals.

    Wow!

by roundman on 11/4/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

The Platinum seats were excellent; what a great vantage point to see a game. The game itself was slow for the first 3 quarters but then BAM! The Mav's went wild in the 4th with Dirk scoring 29 points in the last eight minutes!

    The best among the best

by MIV1914 on 11/4/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

Mavs games are always exciting to watch... but this game was one of the best among the best. Mavs came back from 16 points under to win by 11 points to Utah. Dirk scored 40 points of the Mavs total of 96. GREAT game! It is always a good spent time to watch the Mavs play.

    Mav's home opener

by spankyntx on 10/28/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

The Mavericks arena, the AAC has finally upgraded the scoreboards in the arena. They look to be high def and they still have some software issues to be worked out. Several of the monitors were flicking with misc crap which made it hard to watch. Good arena to watch a game. The tickets I had for this game where in the Platimun sect. My regular season tickets are lower level. I wish season ticket holders had access to that level during the game.

    MIA MAVS

by Sistor on 10/28/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

As usual the whole Mavs Experience was fantastic. Mark does a great job of giving you a bang for your buck, which can't be said about all sports team owners. . However, the PA announcer could be much better, and the 12 MIA MAVS who where apparently on the roster but couldn't be found last night need to show up or its going to be a long season.

    Mavs are fun family time!

by Mavsfan67 on 10/28/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

While we lost the game, it was a fun time and atmosphere for opening night. Mavs need to improve their play hopefully sooner rather than later!

    Mavs game outta sight!!

by richardewi on 10/19/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

I really enjoyed the Mavs-Cavs preseason game at the AAC! I was not happy that LeBron did not play, or that Shawn Marion wasn't playing either, but beyond that, I had a great time. I do feel that preseason games should be priced differently (lower) than regular season games, as I had a tough time keeping track of the players on the court. In fact, none of the five Cavs regular starters played, and the best player on the court for them was some guy named Moon, who kept raining down three-pointers against the Mavs. Oh well, here's to wishful thinking, huh? I would definitely say to anyone who's considering coming out to a Mavs game to go ahead and jump!! You won't regret it!! Boy, I can't wait 'til the season opener vs the Wizards!!!!!!

    Wow

by Ajon33 on 10/19/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

For the price that I paid for my tickets it was great. Although the best player for the Cavs did not play I got to see some of the rising stars play that I usually wouldn't see during the season. It was my girlfriends first time going to a Mavs game and she had a blast...plus through ticket master you never have to wait at the box office again they come straight to your mail box....Great buy

The Mavs versus Cavs was sick!

by Kikig on 10/18/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

Sick as in half the Cavalier team didn't play. I am a Mavs girl through and through, but when Cleveland comes to town, this Ohio born girl turns all bets off and roots for her hometown team. With that said, having spent over $500 for amazing seats behind the Cleveland bench and only getting to watch LeBron James warm up, and Shaq finally show up in a suit while a majority of the other players were in the lockeroom with injuries and sickness, I was sorely disappointed. Especially since LeBron had played the night before in San Antonio. I can't afford to buy tickets for their next match up on Dec 20th and have even checked out the Mavs Trading Posts. Tickets are so outrageously priced that I am really disappointed the Cavs didn't even have LeBron or Shaq play for even a few minutes. If I could, I would not ask for anything other than the same tickets for the next game against Cleveland since I can't get a refund for the game I've already attended. While I understand it's not anyone's fault, I had to make a decision between one of two games in Dallas where their played the Cavs. I guess I chose the wrong one. Othe than that, the AA Center is always fun and amazing.
