Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

The game was great, we had great platinum seating and the food service was great. This is the way to watch a Mav game!!!! I have not been to a game, and the parking fees seemed a bit much, but after we had a good time!

  • Mavs game was incredible!!!

    by 3kidsMomDad on 11/21/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time we splurged and sat in the 100's. WOW!!! The kids were able to give the players high-5's, they got some autographs, and we felt like we were actually part of the game. The crowd was great! We enjoyed the family meal deals...bottom-less drinks and popcorn are a must! One of the kids' highlights was being shown on the jumbotron. Overall, it was an amzing night!!!....a 40th birthday present my husband will NEVER forget!!!!!

My brother in law and son flew down from Canada for a weekend of sports and this was the perfect kick off. Our seats were awesome, affordable and the game was close, exciting and fun. Only downer was that my son wanted a picture of him with the cheerleaders. This is way worth it!

  • Mavs win!!

Great game! Great atmosphere! The crowd was loud. Obviously the only flaw are the high beer prices.

  • Spurs Get The Boot (Kicking) in Mavs Rowdyville!

    by KuteK8 on 11/20/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Always a Fun 'n Festive showdown in a Mavs vs. Spurs event! The San Antonio Spurs were in our house (AAC) with a Dallas Mavericks victory in OT!!! Especially enjoyed being ROWDY, LOUD & PROUD with so many Spurs fans in attendance!!! The people at Pizza Patron (sec 313) in concessions treated me like a VIP and enhanced my AAC experience! If you were not present during this Nov. 18th game, you missed a treat. It doesn't get any better than this!

  • Dallas Mavericks is a must attend

by Labruja on 11/19/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing the Dallas Mavericks live instead of on television was very exciting. The etiquette of the fans was far better than a football game. The ushers not letting people into the aisles during play is a very classy touch making the game that much more enjoyable.

  • DIRK IS THE REAL MAVS MVP MAN

    by PISTOL5876 on 11/19/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was a truly amazing baskeball game with playoff atmosphere. The fans really enjoyed it including myself and my wife who normally does not watch sports on T.V. much but if you take her to go live she actually enjoyed herself to witness excitement. Going into overtime was a plus to see more action. I loved it!!

It's the first time I 've ever been to an NBA game and that was awesome. Perfect view, even from the highest seats. Too bad Parker was not here. Awesome show ! I give 4 stars only to have a chance to see better next time, but that was a blast !
