Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

We had a wonderful time at the Mavericks game and will definately plan to go back. We rode the train to the game which was wonderful since we were dropped off right in front of AA center. The game was a lot of fun and AA center is beautiful.

  • Mav's hung in there to win

I hate and love these nail biters. We need to play better defense or we will not be able to beat the Spurs or Rockets

It's always nice to see Mavericks play at the American Airlines Center. Parking is made very easy, and the Platinum levels seats that we had this time were very nice too. It was a good game although Mavericks lost.

I appriciate the gratis tickets, however the seating in the section I was in were a bit uncomfortable. However the food and the view were great.

  • Mavricks should have won

by mrRodgers on 11/25/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The Mavricks are a much better team than the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors were short handed, without their coach, and playing away from home. They don't have a Nowintzki, a Kid, or a Terry. The Mavricks are losing to teams that are not a physical match. I expect more.

  • Warriors v. Mavs

by DubleU on 11/25/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

As always the AAC was loud and rockin'. Unfortunately, the Mavs couldn't pull off the win. Better luck with the Rockets.

Last night was a great experience for my entire family. We had the chance to meet and spend time with JJ Barea. He is a great athlete but most of all, he is a great human being. He make all of us as Puertoricans very proud. The event fulfill all our expectations.

Seats were average. basket blocked our view of much of the action. Mavs had very uninspiring loss.

Great seats and great game. We had seats on the glass of the platinum section. They were very nice and we had great service too. You only had to get up for the bathroom.

  • Mavericks vs Kings was intense!

    by clove224 on 11/21/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The American Airlines arena and the game itself was a grand production. We enjoyed all aspects of the event: the seats were great, the game was intense, the crowd was managed quietly and efficiently. We loved it! The only downside was not getting a t-shirt out of over a thousand! We were seated behind the Mavs corner so no t-shirts were shot, thrown or in anyway lobbed our direction.

  • Outstanding Maverick Game

    by Pam2003 on 11/21/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We had great seats and tasty food. It was very enjoyable to be sitting closer to the court than we usually sit in our regular season ticket seats. Could not have asked for a better evening of Maverick play!

  • Mavs Game was Fantastic

    by Phil1105 on 11/21/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I had a blast at the Mavs game Friday night. We started with dinner at Old #7 and it was great. We met some wonderful people in Sec 121 and everyone around us were excellent fans and very friendly. The game was entertaining and we were impressed with the effort of the Sacremento team. For an early regular season game against a team with no real superstars, it was incredible.
