Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved.

Their win totals increased in each of their first four seasons. Led by Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star, they reached the playoffs for the first time in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the Miami HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to three straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals.

Great Seats, Great Game, Go Mavs!

by ichibannowitzki on 11/8/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

We got corner seats in the Platinum section for Mavs vs Raptors on a Saturday night. This was the closest we've ever gotten to seeing Dirk & Co. in action. View was great although we were in a corner, since we usually sit courtside. Ushers were courteous and helpful. Overall a wonderful Saturday night out for us.

It was fantastic. It was my wife first time in the Plantinum level area and she loved it. Great food and dessert. The view was great. Staff and fans acted professional. The extra flat screen t.v. was a plus especially showing other live sporting events.

Concessions were a little spendy... but what do you expect. Other than dropping $13 for a glass of wine that would cost $5 a bottle we had a great time.

    Mavs vs. Raptors

by aturboZ on 11/8/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

Great game, wonderful venue and the Mavs won. The best part is the new HD screen on the scoreboard. You will never miss a play or the right angle with that in place. Good job Mark Cuban!

It was our first time on this kind of event and it was fabulous... It seems like everybody loves to be there, everybody lives the game as they were playing too. Actually, that experience was one of the most amazing things we did during our trip to Dallas. Congratulations, you really made us to spend great time there!

    Go Mavs!!!

by 52Bear on 11/5/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

Absolutely fabulous game. The Mavs came back to beat Utah from a 17 point deficit. Dirk must've scored 25 points in the 4th quarter alone. The seats were just as good as expected.

    Mavs Comeback

by barnabbus on 11/4/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

The game started out disappointingly slow. No player was standing out or playing with much enthusiasm. This led to the Mavs going into half-time down a basket. The third quarter wasn't any better...actually it was worse. At one point the Mavs were down by 17 points. Then in the forth I guess Dirk decided he didn't want to loose this one and opened a can on the Jazz! I think more than half of his 40 points last night were scored in the forth quarter and the Jazz couldn't keep up with him. This got all the fans to their feet for the final seven minutes or so of play despite the Jazz's two minute timeout to try and slow the momentum. In the end the Mavs not only climbed out of their 17 point hole, but finished the Jazz off with an eleven point victory! Heck of a comeback and you should have been there for the energy in that place! Well done Dirk! Someone else on the Mavs needs to step it up a notch and we'll be a serious contender!

worst and best - all in one

by Merricks on 11/4/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

Well, for those of you that joined me and the other 19,000 fans, I'm sure you'd agree it was probably one of the worst 3 qtrs of offensive Dallas Mavericks basketball ever played at either the AAC or Reunion. But then, from out of nowhere, it turned into the best 4th quarter game by an individual I've ever witnessed, from any NBA team. Just shows what takin' it to the rack can do! Go Mavs!

    Dallas Maverics defeat Utah Jazz

by MavFanRP on 11/4/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

I got 2 lower level seats to Mavs vs Jazz. Mavs were not shooting very well through more than 3 quarters. The Jazz were also pretty cold in the first half, but built a good lead in the 3rd. At the start of the 4th quarter Jazz were leading by 15 points and Dirk only had 11 points. With less than 10 minutes left in the game, and Dallas down by 16 points, Dirk took over the game. He made jump shots, he drove to the lane, he drew fouls, and hit 14 of 14 free throws. His performance seemed to inspire teammates to play tougher defense and limit the Jazz. By the time he went to the bench with a standing ovation, at 28 seconds remaining, he had set a franchise record of 29 points in one quarter. The Maverics went from 16 points down to win it by 11 points! I am so glad my son and I got to see a great comeback by the Mavs and an amazing performance by Dirk.

    Thank Goodness for Dirk

by TUOC50 on 11/4/09American Airlines Center - Dallas

Great outcome to the game. Neither team will make the NBA finals based on the sloppy first 3 1/2 quarters. HD replay screen has good picture, sound not synced with picture. Sound system obviously needs some work. Overall production sloppy. New PA announcer performed like the rookie he is. His voice is a little high pitched but otherwise not nearly as annoying as Billy Hayes. Mavs dancers mediocre relative to usual performance.
