Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

Had complimentary platinum level seats for being a season ticket holder. I don't want to watch the Mavs from any other level from this point on. The view, food and service was amazing.

by Mavalicious on 12/8/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

How could you go wrong? Discount tickets (they're readily available, just sniff around), a decent opponent, and an exciting Mavs victory. Even though we usually don't do this, we ran into some friends in the Old number 7 and ended up watching the whole second half from there. So what? It was still fun! So many options at the AA center. Much fun!

Amazing experience to watch an NBA game in the American Airlines center! Too bad they lost. But man, that Dirk Nowitzki can play! Unbelievable. I understand he is from Germany. Nice to see that European players are in the NBA!

by KamandFrankP on 12/6/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The Mavs had great hustle on the court...they tried to dominate the Hawks but unfortunately, Kidd prevented that from happening. Next time, just pass the ball to DIRK!!!

by Purplewoman on 12/1/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

For the price of these tickets on the platinum level it was an awesome deal. I thought what a way to enjoy the game w/o breaking the bank before Christmas. I enjoy watching the Mavs and sitting next in the platinum level in section 215 B seats 5 & 6, my mavs partner, Jennifer and I had a wonderful time. We have seats in the rowdy loud and proud section next to the Sprite section. So being able to enjoy the seats was the best. I'm looking forward to other events like this and I'm really so happy that Mark Cuban has done some really awesome things for the Mavs fan. Its really great to have an owner that believes in the fans and makes it possible for most to enjoy a Mavs game.
