Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

Bought 4 tickets to take my daughter and her boyfriend who were in from NYC. Used the ESPN code to get discount tickets for lower bowl seats. The seats were awesome. The game was fun and exciting to watch as were all the other activities that went on during the breaks. My daughter said this was the best thing that she had done the entire time she was home for the holidays. Thanks for giving her a special memory to take back to NYC.

  • Mavs Platinum seating is great

    by Iggy21 on 12/26/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The Mavs platinum seating is awesome at the A.A. center. I usually sit in the cheap seats (five rows from the very top), so this was a real treat - thank you Mark Cuban for all that you do for the fans. We received these tickets for only the cost of the processing; I am assuming because we have bought the ten game pack for the last few years. The seats were so fantastic because one, J.J. did not look near as small (my friend's favorite player) and two, I was rarely tempted to look at the huge video screen ( as I usually am in my regular cheap seats) because of the great real view I had from these seats. I do have one negative comment - The platinum level/club is a little pretentious for my taste. I am a die hard sports fan - I go to see the games. The people in this level are a bit snooty. They are there to be seen. I have grown up in Dallas - I understand, but really, some of these people need to get over themselves. The crowd was not as nearly participatory or supportive as in the cheap seats. Maybe I just don't have enough class to sit with the beautiful people of Dallas. I am in my forties, female and relatively attractive. My friend is in her thirties and very attractive. I say this only so that I am not a total nay sayer or fish out of water. The event staff was fantastic. We were unsure of where to go and had no problem finding help. One event staffer even escorted us to our seats when we ended up by the suits. Although, he could have been trying to get us away from the really beautiful people of Dallas, Just Kidding. The gentleman was very nice. The elevator attendants were a bit much. Anyway, thanks again Mark Cuban - we fans - love you. Thanks for the very upscale experience at the Mavs Game. A true fan for life. P.S. - we did lose this game. Are we really paying Shaun Marion to play for us?

by VeggieVixen on 12/23/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

I hate the Mavs lost, but the service on the Plat. section is soo great it didn't matter. There are comfy chairs as well as places to watch the game and have a cocktail. I also got a little networking done. GREAT!!! Can't wait for another game. Go MAVS!!!

  • American Airlines Center PA announcer

by theekim on 12/23/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Typical solid NBA game experience. One complaint voiced by myself and a number of other fans. The American Airlines Center has a habit of cheering on the Mavs loudly using the PA system during play. We found this very distracting and detracting from the experience. I've been to many NBA games in other cities and I've never come across this practice. Anyway, just my two-cents. Thanks.

  • First Date

  • Sad Mav's

by SadMav on 12/23/09American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

So sad to see our aging team with no youth in the wings. Portland is a team on the rise. Lot's of youth. 5 players injured and they still kicked our tail. Typical mav's 4th quarter. Last 3 minutes of the game, no body takes the ball strong to the rim, just settle for jump shots. Great family venue. Just so sad we lost.

  • Game was exciting but Mavs lost!!
