Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Great seats

    by BobW68 on 1/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The seats were great, but I only bought those Platinum seats because of the Black Friday 50% off sale. Unfortunately, the Mavs probably played their worst game of the year.

  • GREAT MAVS GAME

  • Great Come from Behind Win!

by DubleU on 1/7/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Mavericks almost let this one get away but eventually turned it on to take the win from the Pistons. It was one to watch right to the very end.

  • Great game at grand old arena

by Freik on 1/7/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Watched MAVS take on Memphis grizzlies in a grand ole arena that is the American Airlines Center. The building is still amazing and has a small arena feeling. Different food choices that we have not been accustomed to at NBA games. Prices for food and drinks are the usual astronomical high as you expect of any other sporting event facility. Train station arrives right in front and parking prices were low, probably be because o0f the holiday weekend.

The game was great and the view was amazing!!! The only downside was the walkway in the 300's sections was very narrow and hard to move around in.

  • Mav's vs. Det was great game

by spankyntx on 1/6/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Det came out firing big time, surely they are tired of losing after dropping 9 in a row coming into this contest. The Mavericks meanwhile started slowly and soon found themseleves down 10+ points most of the first half. Finally Dirk came alive as he scored 14 of his 22 points in the 3rd quarter. Detroit played in close throughtout the 4th quarter but a solid team effot by the Mavericks allowed the team to escape with a win on this clod night. Go Mav's!

  • Dallas Mavericks vs. Detroit Pistons

by DallasCritique on 1/6/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

So Exciting! Great fun for our whole family! The Mavs pulled it out in the 4th quarter it was AWESOME! And honestly, with the bobble head giveaways and the signs waiting for us in our seats along with the opportunity to get gift cards and T-shirts. The tickets paid for themselves. I felt like I owed the MAVS some change, LOL Get to a MAVS GAME! They ROCK!

  • MAVS!

by Techfan on 1/6/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I purchased these tickets as gifts for my brother and good friend. We were helped to our seats quickly and thought the view was great! I enjoyed the opportunity to see a game on the floor seat level for an affordable price. I will definately recommend to everyone I know to attend at least one game. The arena was clean and the staff was friendly. Parking was easy both entering and exiting the game. Will be back soon! Had a great time!

  • Mavs made me anxious, but we Won!

by Purplewoman on 1/6/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Hey the Mavs didn't show up until the 3rd quarter but what a 3rd & 4th quarter it was! The seats were great and I'm glad as a season ticket holder I was given the opportunity to go to this game. My co-worker Jennifer and I really enjoyed the game. We share season tickets in the Rowdy, Loud and proud section and we've enjoyed going to the games with the opportunity to sit in seats we wouldn't have been able to afford. We've been given a great view of future seats we may want to purchase and been able to have a better vantage point than during the seating selection process in the summer. Thank you so much, Mavs front office to allow the unique opportunity! You guys & Mark Cuban are so awesome. Go Mavs!!!! Your # 2 fan...we ALL know that Mark is the # 1 fan! LOL
