Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

Mavs beat OKC by one point, close as it could be, and our seats were as good as you can get. Attendants and concessions workers were friendly. We had a great time. No issue with tickets, parking, etc.

  • Great game!!!

by Jazzydes on 1/14/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great game! There were several lead changes, and the biggest lead was no more than 8 points. I'm a Mav fan and even though we lost, it was an exciting, close game.

  • AWESOME Seats!

by Babymoon on 1/14/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We had never actually been on the platinum level before - boy were we in for a great surprise! The seats were great - even if on the end of the court, there is not a bad seat!! Having servers to get your drinks and food, if you want, access to all the food areas - yes, even a DESSERT BAR! For the price we paid, we could not ask for anything better - we will be getting these type of seats again for any games in the future! Hate the Mavs lost that night....bummer

It was a good game. It was nice to see Dirk get his 20,000 points.

  • Mavs Lakers.......too much flash!

    by Cougar68 on 1/14/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 2 out of 5

I think there was a basketball game going on in the background of all the noise and commotion going on at the AAC. I think Cuban needs to step back and let the game speak for itself. I was told he wants on the sideshows going on, but I think it is a distraction for the real BB fan and the players. Come on Mark let's have old school B-Ball w/o all the extra CRAP !

  • Dirk scoring his 20,000 point!

    by Game0113 on 1/14/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers game was a great game for Mavs fans and Lakers fans alike. My fiance was rooting for the Mavs & I was rooting for the Lakers, being from L.A. myself. The Platinum seats were great as well as the lounge area. It was amazing to see Dirk accomplish scoring 20k points as only 7 others have achieved this before him. Even though the Mavs lost, it was still a great game.

  • Lakers Pull it Out In Spite of...

by TiaW on 1/14/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Yes Kobe was injured and did not score until the 2nd quarter and only scored 10 points. But this is why this game was soooo exciting. It was close the entire time and it came down to the last minute when Lakers earned a win and broke the 4 game losing streak. SWEEEET! The American Airlines Center is great. Been there before but for a concert. This was a whole new experience. I still cannot fathom sitting in the nosebleeds but even the patrons waaaaaaaaayyyyyy up there was pumped!

  • Lakers #1

    by Laker24Girl on 1/14/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The game was an unforgettable experience. Everybody left satisfied regardless of who you went for. The Mavs got to celebrate Dirk's 20,000 pts and us the Lakers not just a victory but the milestone of first NBA team with 3,000 wins. Overall great experience.

  • A Pitiful Performance

by Disgrunted on 1/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

I have a hard time understanding how the Mavericks can play so well one night and be absolutely terrible the next. Yes, there will be times when the shooters are off, but the defense doesn't need to follow. I find it hard to believe that Carlisle doesn't have enough sense to take a time out and read the riot act to his players and to tell them to drive to the basket rather than shoot the jump shot from 15 - 20 feet out. I don't get paid a million dollars and I can recognize that.

  • Great Mavs Comeback

by mfcufc on 1/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I took my three kids to their first US basketball game and they loved it. With the Mavericks being 14 points down at one point it seemed that they had left themselves with a mountain to climb, but as they clawed their way back to being level at the start of the fourth quarter they moved up a gear to win the game with points to spare. The metro made it easy to get to the stadium and the family pack tickets were excellent value.

  • Mavs seats were great

We bought tickets through the Black Friday promotion, had front row seats on the Platinum level. It was a great Christmas present for my family members.
