Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Dallas Mavericks are fun to watch!

    by 4Peace on 2/4/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The game was great. And the "eye candy" in the stands and at the Jack Daniels bar was just as good, if not better.

  • Mavs dominate

    by bodean40 on 2/4/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

If ever a game to snap a losing streak it could not be any better than against Nellie and the Warriors. The Mavs took the lead early and never looked back even though the warriors made a late fourth quarter drive to come within four to tie, but the Mavs re-extended the lead and closed it out on a winning round.

  • Another 1-point win for the Mavs

    by RipOSU82 on 2/1/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter and I had an awesome time sitting in the lower level. Our season tickets are in 317 and even though we love our seats, experiencing the game that close to the action provides an amazing perspective on how big the guys are and how intense the action is.

One of the best events that I have attended. The game was awesome, but just being at the Mavericks games are so much fun! This game was especially good because it was so close, so exciting, went into overtime. The only thing that did not happen is the Mavericks did not win. But we will save that for another night. Go MAVS !!!!!

I purchased these tickets for my daughter and her boyfriend for Christmas who are only 17. What an amazing game to see! They both had such a fun time watching a very exciting game. They are alreaady asking for tickets to another game!

  • Mavericks were forgettable

by quietplease on 1/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 2 out of 5

Other than the Mavericks not playing well or hard, the music and canned noise was very annoying. I know I am not the only person who feels this way. As a season ticket holder, I hear comments about it on a reglular basis from people of all ages. Most people who come to the Maverick games really want to watch basketball and cheer on the Mavs. The music and drops and other piped in noise make me and many others long for the quiet of watching the game on TV. While I love coming to the games and cheering for the Mavs, it does seem the arena is getting louder and louder - and not from fans cheering. They are cheering and that is the good noise. A loud crowd is great! Get rid of all the other racket!!

  • Platinum is magnificent!

    by JJ54 on 1/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

We loved watching the game from the platinum level! Great basketball and great atmosphere made for a great evening.

  • Mav's vs. Portland

by FloydsBirdies on 1/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Game was great, the areana is a wonderful place for sporting events. ( I've never seen a concert there ). The timeout and halftime entertainment was very good. Love the fat male dancers!!! Don't understand why in our Section 325 you'd have to wait for a whistle to return to your seat?? Overall, love going to Mav's & Stars!!

  • Mavs game was fun

by ambersanaggie on 1/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The game went really well.....too bad they lost!:(

  • MAVS VS PORTLAND

by GalGroup on 1/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The MAVS should have doubled up on guarding Miller; especially for a young man who scored 50+ points. Other teams double up on Nowitzki to keep him from scoring. Defense needs work; where were the rebounders for the MAVS. Not sure what was going on in the first half with Dampier; wasn't awake and letting Portland just come up an take the ball out of his hands. He so hesitant when he has the ball acting as if he doesn't know what to do, dribble, pass or shoot?!! Maybe someone could have put in that missed basket of Dirks at the end. Disappointing game with such a close score and overtime.

  • FAKE NOISE almost ruins great event!

by suzzi on 1/31/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great and very exciting but the VOLUME of the announcer, the fake canned crowd noise and the "DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!" from the over the top speaker system almost ruins an otherwise fine event. It actually takes the crowd out of the game.

  • mavs in platinum....priceless!

by dirkfan on 1/29/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were great, the energy was incredible, and the game was awesome!

  • Great Game

by rodwill on 1/28/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

There's nothing like winning, and with the Maverick makes it even better. go Mavs.

  • Mavs win

    by dan17shp on 1/27/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I am a season ticket holder so going to mavs games is nothing new to me. I really enjoyed my time and the lower bowl is a lot better to see the game however it seems that the fans are not as roudy as they are higher up. I would suggest the AAC upgrade fans from higher up to fill the lower seats.

  • Mavs vs Bucks

    by virgo51 on 1/27/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Mavs played a terrible game.Dampier could not guard Bogut effectively. They really didn't deserve to win. Dirk needs another player who can cover the middle effectively.

  • Mavs Game

by sleepingbear on 1/27/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Mavericks game are always a blast. We had good seats for this one and the crowd was into it. It was a 1 point victory for the good guys so it was exciting and everyone went home happy

  • Kidds Quick Reflex!!!!!

    by Cajun4You on 1/27/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Jason Kidd is an experience Player and it shows on the floor. Kidd is a winning playmaker, he leads his team with not a blink of an eye!!!!! Love the Quck thinking, movement and style. When it comes to emotions after a bad call, he is very smooth. I had two 9 year boys with me and when Kid reflex was so quick given his teammate back the ball after Missing the First time, " The two boys look at each other and said,Kidd go Hard.", with Amazement!!!! Needed More Excitement during Halftime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great game

It was an amazing game. And loving the fact that on platinum level you can order from your seat so you don't have to miss the action.

  • Record tieing win

by SkinnyMavsFan on 1/27/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I was hesitant to attend this game because the Bucks are not a "Marquee" team, but I got much more than expected. I am so glad I went and stayed until the final buzzer.
