Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

Lots of fun. Great service at the arena. One bad thing...the public address is so loud it is painful. Cuban seems to think we need to be blasted into enthusiasm. How about just letting us enjoy the game.

    by Leti419 on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

My husband & I purchased these tickets thinking they would be too high and obstructive, however, they were pretty great seats. purchased them on the half price night and had not top-top row but close to the stairs and a clear view to watch the Mavs take thier 13th straight win against the Nets. Would love to get these tickets again!

  • The kids had a blast, what a great game!

    by jmsmitty123 on 3/7/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time that we had taken our children to a professional basketball game. It inspired my 8 yo to pick up his ball, and start playing, and the two younger kids (3 and 6) also had a great time. They were able to make posters before the game, and really got into the music and cheering. We had a blast and will do it again soon.

  • Mavs: Always Awesome!

by Hamgerguin on 3/7/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

My family loves to go to the Mavericks games, and this one was no exception. Even though we were in the upper deck we could see all the action and participate in the total fan experience.

Great entertainment -- even for my wife who does not care much for sports. We had a wonderful time and were satisfied with the seats we got for the price paid.

Another wonderful event at the AAC. Mavs won 10th straight game. Great time!

  • Mavs streak continues!

by Mavamania on 3/6/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I enjoyed a great night at the AAC to watch the Mavs as they hosted the Kings. The major downer was watching Rick Carlisle get ejected, though it was the first time for us to see a coach get thrown out. I think he overreacted just a bit. The side entertainment is just as good. We saw lots of mini games including baby-crawl race with actual infants (how humiliating), shirt cannons, Mavs Man doing trampoline dunks, the cheer leaders doing their normal teases, and so on.

  • Best game ever!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great

    by Ethan214 on 3/1/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The experience was great the atmosphere was wonderful. The only dislike is, do not purchase alcohol on the first floor. I bought 2 drinks and had to throw them away because you cant take the drinks from the first floor to the second floor, and the bad think about it is they serve the same drinks on the next floors. They say they have different liquor licenses. That is stupid. They need to get one license are make sure that people know they cant take drinks on different floor. Other than that it was wonderful
