Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for four more consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Mavs 13th straight win comes to an end!

by FoxyLadee on 3/15/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

This was my husbands first game with me to see the Mavs, and the game between the Mavs and the Knicks was very forgetable. I was so disappointed in their lack of offense and especially defense. After having won 13 straight games, they came out at home and looked totally lost in their performance. It was excrutiating to watch these professionals get paid for that performance. The atmosphere was electrfying with the fans, The only thing I will remember about this game, is that I had a picture taken with Babe Laufunberg former backup quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys......that is the only highlight!!!!

  • Go MAv's

    by Myron30 on 3/12/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

My son's had a ball, the MAv's started off kinda slow but eventually they kicked it in gear and when they did they had the house rocking. In all when the game ended my son looked at me and said this was a great gift, Thanks dad....... this really ended up a special boys night out. And with the Mav's adding to their 9 game winning streak made that much more enjoyable.

THIS GAME WAS AMAZING. IT WAS MY VERY FIRST PRO NBA GAME AND I LIKED IT ALOT. I WILL BE GETTING SEASON TICKETS FOR 2010-2011 SEASON. WAY TO GO MAVS!!!! YOU HAVE A NEW FAN......

  • by Anonymous on 3/12/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The event was great! American Airlines is a great facility and staff are courteous. THe Mavs however, stunk. They were playing a really bad team and almost lost the game. Most of the newcomers on the team are terrible. At least Haywood is tall. Dirk was unbelievably flat. Kidd had a good game, but I did not get a bobble head. Hey can I get one now? I do love the Mavs and hope they go farther this year in the playoffs. I would love to come back to a playoff game!

  • MAVS ROCK!!!!

    by WHR1 on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Down 18 points the Mavs staged a great comeback to post their 13th win in a row. On top of that it was Jason Kidd Bobblehead night!!!

  • Mavericks' basketball tickets

by HARDWINTERINTHECOUNTRY on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Responded to internet email sales ad which took me to a site which was easy to use. I was able to see a seating chart indicating which seats were available at the various sales prices, and then to select the exact seats that I wanted. And there were some great seats available. Had choice of ticket delivery method and chose instant self printing at a modest $2+ per ticket surcharge. Since I knew exactly what I was getting (I had been to AA arena before), there were no bad surprises, and it was a marvelous game.

by MavsGal on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was my boyfriend's first NBA game ever, and he LOVED it. Our Platinum Level seats were fantastic -- what a view! We ordered grub from our seats, and service was great. Good seats, good food, good game, good time!

  • AWESOME EXPERIENCE FOR MY 10yr old SON!!!

    by BIGSMITTY65 on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR MY SON, IT WAS HIS FIRST TIME BEING AT A MAVS GAME, ACTUALLY IT WAS HIS FIRST TIME IN THE AAC AND HE THOUGHT IT WAS WONDERFUL!!! HE HAD ALOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS THAT WHERE GOING ON AROUND US, THE ONE THING THAT HE WAS DISAPPOINTED ABOUT WAS THAT HE DIDN'T GET TO GET ONE OF THE JASON KIDD BOBBLEHEADS(JASON BEING HIS FAVORITE MAVS PLAYER)BUT OTHER THAN THAT HE HAD A SUPER TIME!!! ON A SCALE OF 1-10 I WOULD SAY THE EXPERIENCE WAS A 91/2, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A 10 BUT HE DIDN'T GET TO GET THE JASON KIDD BOBBLEHEAD.

  • 13 in a row

    by Iggy21 on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Great seats!!! I was able to take advantage of the Ticket master Steal a Seat deal. I usually sit in the nose bleed section. This was quite a treat to not even be tempted to look at the big screen except for replays. The game would have been amazing had we not played so poorly. Good to see Damp and Haywood back in action - they both need some practice after their layoff. Kidd, as always, pulled it out for us. As a bonus we got a Kidd bobble head. Not many T-shirts though. Go Roddy - nice to see some energy!!!!!

  • MAVS Vs NETS

by WeatherfordResident on 3/11/10American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience. I commend all the AA staff for making the experience good. I would only suggest it might be good to announce beer sales are ending.
