D.C. United History

D.C. United dominated the early days of MLS. They appeared in the league’s first four championship games, winning three of them, and added a fourth title in 2004, all before the league was even a decade old. They were dominant under the leadership of their first coach, Bruce Arena, from 1996 until 1998. He won 56 percent of his games in D.C., by far the best mark of any coach in team history.

Between 1997 and 2007, the United earned four Supporters’ Shields for best regular season record and claimed three U.S. Open Cup trophies in 1996, 2008 and 2013. The team’s alumni include a league-best four MVP recipients: Marco Etcheverry in 1998, Christian Gomez in 2006, Luciano Emilio in 2007 and Dwayne De Rosario in 2011. D.C. entered a new era with the arrival of English star Wayne Rooney in 2018. United's 2018 debut season in Audi Field was a success thanks in large part to Rooney.

    Great game, misleading advertisement

by jicdoug on 7/15/09RFK Stadium - Washington

Great game, but we had no idea from the online ad that there were two games, first women's, then men's. Both were good games, but it might have affected our planning.

    Exciting game in the rain

by twoshu on 7/14/09RFK Stadium - Washington

Rained the whole time, which made the game exciting (we were under cover, but the players were working hard to stay on their feet). Enjoyed the Armed Services Day performances. Long walk from the subway station.

    Not in America...

by MehMeh on 7/12/09RFK Stadium - Washington

Well, everything was awesome except for the actual game. We wanted to just see the men's game, but had to pay twice as much because of the doubleheader. dang. Then, the game was great, except that no one ever scored and they just ended the game after a while. I don't know how long it was cause the clocks all gave up and stopped counting. This is America! We don't appreciate lazy clocks or tie games!

The Game was nice to see. Far from a Europen game as far as excitement but it seems to be gaining some momentum.

    United Up Close and Personal

by dcfan on 7/1/09Maryland Soccerplex - Boyds

It's great seeing the United at the soccerplex. You get so close to the action and the players. Of course, not all of the usual starters play or even make the trip. On the other hand, some hang out in the stands and all are gracious signing autographs and posing for pictures. Both times we've attended, mydaughter was in heaven siwth some of her favorite players and heartthrobs. The facility is very conveninent to us Maryland fans. I'd suggest two upgrades-the ticketing system, which doesn't include a seating diagram or ability to choose seats, and the sounds sytem, which needs a lot of improvement. I'll be back next week for the next round!
