D.C. United History

D.C. United dominated the early days of MLS. They appeared in the league’s first four championship games, winning three of them, and added a fourth title in 2004, all before the league was even a decade old. They were dominant under the leadership of their first coach, Bruce Arena, from 1996 until 1998. He won 56 percent of his games in D.C., by far the best mark of any coach in team history.

Between 1997 and 2007, the United earned four Supporters’ Shields for best regular season record and claimed three U.S. Open Cup trophies in 1996, 2008 and 2013. The team’s alumni include a league-best four MVP recipients: Marco Etcheverry in 1998, Christian Gomez in 2006, Luciano Emilio in 2007 and Dwayne De Rosario in 2011. D.C. entered a new era with the arrival of English star Wayne Rooney in 2018. United's 2018 debut season in Audi Field was a success thanks in large part to Rooney.

    BEST.GAME.IN.THE.AREA.THIS.YEAR!

by rawwritsthalia on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

The energy was incredible! Everyone was so pumped for the match. It was nice to have Real Madrid and DC United fans confused as I was. I didn't know which team to root for. I love them both! Seems a lot of people there had the same problem. The one thing I didn't like was all the Anti-Ronaldo people. Seriously chill out. Almost all of the people who were speaking ill of him just sounded dumb because they had no basis for their bad-mouthing except jealousy. Overall the game was AMAZING!

    Lots of fun!

by CopyCate on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

I'm pretty sure it was the crowd of 72,386 that made it more exciting than a typical MLS game but we sure had fun. Great seats in the shade made all the difference on a day that reached high 90's.

first half dc united did a fantastic job keeping real madrid working but i think they got cocky. second half dc untied look layed back . Big mistake. real madrid open up on them scoring 3 goal in second half. fantastic game. it would have been better if it was not 100 degree day!!!!!!!!!!!

    Don't get the shuttle!

by GMUFan on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

Real Madrid and DC United were both awesome! It was great to see such good opponents and an unforgettable match! The only complaint I have is the Shuttle Buses advertised on FedEx feild's website (how to get there) were not available. We had to spend an extra $25 to get a cab ride to the stadium. If I had known that, I would have drove! Also, can't control the weather, but it was a *hot* day! Still, an amazing game!

How to approach big soccer games

    by Be45 on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

The game itself was enjoyable, but some factors worked against it: -the heat. Why not schedule soccer games at 9pm during August? -access to the stadium was very bad, and many people missed the beginning of the game as a result and blocking the views of those already there. Getting away was equally slow. -loud blaring music before the game and during the break was unbearable, particularly for those in the upper ring.

    Madrid in DC

by satatwork on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

Can the Americans host a soccer event? Yes! Overall a great day! The stadium was easily accesible and the club level facilities were out of this world! I'm originally from England and have never seen automatic doors at a stadium before (we even took a picture of the doors!)The seats we had were right at the front and in the shade, so we couldn't have picked better if we'd tried. The game was entertaining, but if you could do something about the temperature of the sun that would be great! :-) The only thing missing are the amenities in the area - no bars or restaurants. Also the restaurants in the ground close when the games finishes - lots of people were looking for something to eat after the game, so you could have made a fortune on hospitality. Overall a great experience; thoroughly recommeded; and we'll be back!

Real Madrid fun to see live

by Kdix on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

I thoroughly enjoyed the game yesterday. It was extremely hot but our seats were in the shade and we were right by the doors on the club seating floor so every time the door opened we got a blast of air condititoning. I loved being able to see some of my favorite European soccer players!

    Fedex Field

    by AFC1 on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

The game was great, but the incompetence at the stadium as staggering. We stood a huge throng of people, in 100 degree heat, waiting to get in while a bunch of disinterested "staff" in yellow Tshirts stood there and stopped the line, allowing one person at a time through. When a female was next, the whole line had to stop while Mr. Security had to call for a female staff member to come and pat her down. It's a stadium for God's sake, why are these people not prepared to deal with a crowd??? I'd go watch Real Madrid again, BUT I WOULD NOT GO BACK TO FEDEX FIELD.

DC United event marred by poor management

    by soccermom51 on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

The game itself was fine, but we were shocked at how unprepared the people at FedEx Field seemed to be for the large crowd. You would think they'd know how to handle large crowds from the Redskins games. We waited nearly 30 minutes to get in the gate, for no apparent reason except perhaps understaffing. Everyone seemed to be directed to the same gate, and it's not clear whether they had fewer gates open than usual, or just didn't bother to tell people to use other gates for entrance.

DC easily handled by Real Madrid

by MarylandDoc on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

Real Madrid showed just how infererior our MLS teams are Sunday by easily handling one of the better MLS teams, DC United. The goals were "casual" goals. Ronaldo only played one half and Kaka only played 66 minutes. The MLS has come a long way, but this event clearly showed just how far we have yet to come. (by the way, Real Madrid embarrassed Toronto 5-1 two days earlier) I saw Chelsea vs AC Milan in Baltimore two weeks prior, THAT was a very good game. Better venue and entertainment.

    Great fixture

    by CCF5 on 8/10/09FedExField - Landover

Despite the heat, a really great performance from both teams. Outstanding to have brought in such a top-notch club from Spain-allowed us to see some players live that we would normally only get to see on TV.
