D.C. United History

D.C. United dominated the early days of MLS. They appeared in the league’s first four championship games, winning three of them, and added a fourth title in 2004, all before the league was even a decade old. Between 1997 and 2007, the United earned four Supporters’ Shields for best regular season record and claimed three U.S. Open Cup trophies in 1996, 2008 and 2013.

The United’s alumni include a league-best four MVP recipients: Marco Etcheverry in 1998, Christian Gomez in 2006, Luciano Emilio in 2007 and Dwayne De Rosario in 2011. Emilio and Rosario became the first two of three D.C. Golden Boot recipients in 2007 and 2011, respectively, followed by Christian Benteke in 2024.

  • Great Time, Wish There Were More!

by AceBass on 7/17/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoy soccer matches at RFK Stadium. I just think there are more dedicated fans in the Loudon and Fairfax County Suburbs. Such a pitty that this, ESPN2 televised game did not have a decent turnout. It was a decent match between the 2nd and 3rd string squads for both teams. I'm sure the predicted thunderstorms and rain, prevented additional people from attending. Those of us in attendance had a great time. The second half was worth the price of admission, even if just for the Fun of Being There factor.

  • DC United vs Chivas

by GrammaPimmies on 7/16/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Was an ok game...not many DC fans, they likely were attending the Paul McCartney concert at Nats Stadium.....many Chivas fans, however... Both teams played 'swarm soccer', didn't do much passing, and 'played' with the ball!! Chivas scored in the last minutes of the game, tying the score 1-1... My grandson (9 yrs old, plays on traveling team in Potomac) was critical of both teams, too...so wasn't just my opinion... The Chivas fans did make it exciting...they're very passionate....

  • Great game, empty stadium...

by ElGringoLoco on 7/16/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

DC United and Chivas de Guadalajara put on a great spectacle last week. Too bad almost no one saw it. They need to lower the price points if they want to come close to selling out events like this!

Great game, awesome fans, great seats -- well worth the price!

  • QUITE COMFORTABLE ALL ROUND

by meandaddy on 7/4/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This event was very comfortable, I think that's the best word to describe it. Even though soccer is steadily growing in popularity here at home, it is still not as big as pro football. The result of THAT....was that I was able to pull up and easily find a parking space, which I was (politely) directed to, walk under a neat "tunnel" under the highway, and into the stadium. Once seated, people were bringing by drinx and food, you didn't need to get up to fetch them. The stadium was only half full - which the sponsors probably hate - but I loved it. Lots of empty seats in front of me, and from where I sat I could see everything that was happening on the playing field. The girl at the concession stand was nice. Lots of food to pick from too. Overall a very nice and relaxing experience. Sure beats pro football!

  • First Time to RFK

    by FirstTimeSoccerFan2013 on 7/1/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I have wanted to see a sporting event at RFK stadium for a very long time, and never seem to make it. Fortunately, my ten year old daughter is a very big soccer fan with aspirations to play at the professional level some day. I decided to take her to a real live MLS game at RFK between DC United and Vancouver Whitecaps this past Saturday June 29th. We were thrilled to be there. I was happy to attend because I sat there imagining the legends that have played on that field over the decades. My daughter was thrilled to just be at an MLS game. The view from the stands was excellent. The stadium was small enough that almost any seat available would have been a great seat. RFK is a great stadium to watch an MLS game. The cost of food and drinks was moderate for a professional sporting event. There were two annoyances that we did not like about the surroundings. We purchased two bottles of water from the concession stand, but we were not allowed to keep the bottle screw-on caps. Not sure why? But it made it difficult to carry and use. The other annoyance was that at the end of the game as we were leaving the stadium, we were trying to find our way back to parking lot 8 at 9:30PM. We asked several attendants at the exit gates, but each time we were directed to the wrong underpass to get back to lot 8. It would help if the attendants were more knowledgeable about the surroundings. These are minor issues however. It was a great time!!!

Maryland Soccerplex was awesome to see DC United up close. Nice family atmosphere great weather. It was great that it was buy one ticket get a youth ticket (16 and under) free. Family of 4 went for $50. That was the right price for our family to see MLS. Can't wait to do this again.

The game was great. The seats were just okay. The price was high.

  • DC United Game

by KathiDS on 6/25/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Game and seats were phenomenal ... A group of friends try to go to at least two games each summer. We had an absolutely wonderful weekend in DC and at the game. Oh, and we also brought United good luck as they won, 1-0. Can't wait for the next game.

  • Great game. Awesome crowd !

This is the third game my wife and I have been to this season and I have to say, one of the best. We look forward to attending more.

  • DC v San Jose

    by liverpool1 on 6/24/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

RFK is always a great stadium for soccer. DC United games are high energy and the fans are as fun to watch as the game. Easy Metro ride to the stadium.

We had a great time! The crowd was small but very supportive and the venue was very good! Overall a very good experience!

  • DC united bad venue bad game

by gstang on 6/24/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Very boring game. Not a great MLS venue. Much to large for any MLS team for that matter. Very old stadium. Stadium at least fifty years old with very few amenities and very few upgrades to stadium since built. If looking for a good game and good venue I would prefer the New York redbulls

I traveled to the game from Vienna to RFK, and upon arriving, until I got back onto the Metro, I felt safe, with the presence of the District's security forces in place. The stadium seating location was great, except during the entire game we had to stand up to watch the game from where we were siting - but that's expected. I did notice that on the other side, however, the spectators sat during most of the game....that is where I am planning on seating next time. In regards to the actual sporting event, there were not enough feedback from the game's commentator from the booth. I could have sat at home and gotten more commentator feedback regarding play-by-play action. I am sure i will attend again, but perhaps after the team has become more competitive.

This was my first time to a professional soccer game and it was great. I really enjoyed the game, the atmosphere and the city.

  • Family is the best ingredient.

by Anonymous on 5/29/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Great time. Loved the seats. Would like to have been closer to the team but we saw more action & got a better view of the field. We truly had a great day & we are extremely appreciative of Anthony that took his time to get some autographs for my son since it was his birthday & he really wanted to meet a player some day. We will coming to another game before the season is out. Thanks again for a great time. Karen

  • Solid night

by RuizsPinkShoes on 5/28/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The game didn't go as planned, but it was a good time. The seats were a little beyond my price range for usual weekend entertainment, but they were great seats. We had to stand the whole time but were far enough back from the rowdier fans that our bleachers weren't shaking. It'd be nice if they'd open up some of the higher levels for some cheaper options, but then there probably woulnd't be many folks in the expensive seats. Security was quick to respond to an overly-pumped up fan (read: trying to start a fight) nearby. I was pretty surprised how into the game everyone was - the 100s sections on our side of the stadium had drums, flags, etc... it was great to see the enthusiasm.

  • A total blast, even during a down season!

    by PNut00311 on 5/28/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

What a great atmosphere in the vicinity of the Screaming Eagles (sections 132-134)! Every extra dollar you spend to sit next to one of soccer's finest fan clubs is well worth it.
