D.C. United History

D.C. United dominated the early days of MLS. They appeared in the league’s first four championship games, winning three of them, and added a fourth title in 2004, all before the league was even a decade old. Between 1997 and 2007, the United earned four Supporters’ Shields for best regular season record and claimed three U.S. Open Cup trophies in 1996, 2008 and 2013.

The United’s alumni include a league-best four MVP recipients: Marco Etcheverry in 1998, Christian Gomez in 2006, Luciano Emilio in 2007 and Dwayne De Rosario in 2011. Emilio and Rosario became the first two of three D.C. Golden Boot recipients in 2007 and 2011, respectively, followed by Christian Benteke in 2024.

  • The Beautiful Game in your backyard

by DCUnitedfan on 9/17/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Sure RFK is a crumbling relic, but the DC United fans keep a high level of energy and fun at the home games. Come to sing and cheer and share the experience with those around you, soccer games are as much about crowd energy as it is about the game on the field. Have some fun and Vamos United!

  • Great day out

My girlfriend and I had a great time at the DC United game. It was fun just to be out watching the game.

  • Exciting game

by Dancingbooks on 8/28/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The game was exciting from beginning to end. I only wish that DC United had won the game instead of there being a tie. The only downside is RFK Stadium. You have to walk too far for food.

Our family really enjoyed the game. We plan to catch as many games as we can this season.

  • DC Unitted : Soccer at it's best!

    by Colonials1957 on 8/27/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was an amazing action filled game. The players are extremely talented. I loved watching the way they handled the ball. The crowd was really into the game so that made it exciting too. My granddaughter got to go out on the field and kick a penalty kick because it was kids night. That is something she will never forget because she loves playing soccer. Great night overall!

  • Amazing atmosphere

    by Jamaican1 on 8/27/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I went to the game with my oldest daughter and my youngest son and we had an amazing time. We were seated with the home fans and screaming eagles and we danced the entire game.

  • MLS not so Major

by DBDJR on 8/27/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I yearn for the days when DC United was indeed a major league soccer team. This was a good evening out with my 9 year old grandson but even he comment that the calibre of play was not up to snuff.

  • Family friendly event

    by LoWo21 on 8/27/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Although United tied, it was still a fun, entertaining event. The RFK stadium staff was extremely friendly! I was impressed that everyone greeted me with a smile and pleasant words. This was a great event to take a family to.

  • DC UNITED GAME AT RFK IN WASHINGTON, DC

    by beachluvr62 on 8/6/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The fans were very rude and obstructed our view. We had to move 3 times.

  • My Umbrella was stolen!

    by chris234 on 8/6/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Game was great, but Security confiscated my $40 umbrella, but let me come into RFK with a very large pocketknife???? Does this make sense?? If you are going to confiscate everyone's umbrella at every game, why don't you create an organized system for returning these items. Like a hat check. Its been done before. Thank you for condidering doing this!! The honor system isn't working. You owe this to the fans. Thanks again!!

The day of it rained but the atmosphere was great.

  • First professional game!

by Huskereye on 7/30/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Having never been to a professional soccer game I knew this was going to be part of our DC trip. Easy to get to. (I'm sorry but JFK is a dump.). The beer was cold but the fans were not. My family went to a Nats game on The next day. I asked them whitch would they rather do - baseball or soccer. All 5 said soccer!

  • An insult to the legacy of Robert F. Kennedy

by JohnMG on 7/30/13RFK Stadium - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

RFK Stadium is way past its prime, if it ever had one. I can't imagine which sport it's conducive to watching; perhaps baseball, but certainly not soccer. The sightlines are atrocious. We paid $50 for seats 10 rows from the field; 75% of the action was obscured by the plexiglass shelters behind the two team benches. So we moved to one of the corners. Our view was unobstructed, but the nearest point on the field was at least 50 yards away. The building itself is in an advanced state of deterioration. At some point, if it hasn't occurred already, there are going to be safety issues. I know that DC United has just signed an agreement with the city for a new, soccer-specific stadium. Great news but, until then, I would only consider attending another match at RFK if the upper deck, which offers more adequate (but not excellent) sightlines, were to be reopened to spectators.
