About

Cyndi Lauper is a pop singer and activist from Queens, New York. Upon the release of her 1983 debut album, She’s So Unusual, Lauper became a pop sensation, thanks to the success of Top 5 singles including “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop” and “All Through the Night.” Lauper also won Best New Artist at the 1985 Grammys. Her second and third albums, True Colors (1986) and A Night to Remember (1989), added more hit singles like “True Colors” and “I Drove All Night” to her oeuvre and by the end the decade, Lauper had become synonymous with the ’80s new wave movement and synthpop sound. In addition to her twelve solo albums, Lauper also wrote the music and lyrics for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Kinky Boots, for which she became the first solo woman to ever win the Tony for Best Original Score. In the fall of 2024, the singer embarked on her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour in conjunction with her documentary film LET THE CANARY SING.

  • Cyndi Lauper @ the Bergen Pac in NJ 8/16/09

by Bubbastumper on 8/19/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best shows I've been to and the first time I've ever seen her in concert. Our seats were 6th row center . She was so energetic. She was running around up and down the aisles, jumping on the seats in front of us like she was still in her twenties . GREAT GREAT SHOW!

  • Undisciplined - Good or not so good?

by senorgmc on 8/19/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 3 out of 5

Cyndi Lauper started the show by shuffling onto the stage with guitar strung around her neck, causually saying "hello" to the audience. When she stood before the mic, the guitar amp did not work. A sound tech came out and fiddled with the wires. Cyndi bent down to help him. After a couple of minutes she began the show. That's not a good way to begin a concert. I think Cyndi Lauper's personal appeal to her fans is what I found to interfere with her performance . . . she is undisciplined, not in her art but with her performance. The negative side to that is exemplified by the rocky start to her show and by taking the time to unlace shoes after the first song (back to the audience at the back of the stage) when she could have just come on stage barefoot and by spending too much time in the orchestra section when half of the the audience could not see her (this venue has a very large mezzanine and balcony section). The positive side is that Cyndi Lauper is very personable and seems genuine. She comes across as being unaffected by her fame. And, of course, that is very appealing. Her lack of discipline does not carry over to her art. Her voice is strong and Cyndi is in full control of her music. Other than my surprise that she has not evolved past her pop rock songs of the 1980's, I enjoyed her command of the music. So while I enjoyed the music, this concert could be helped with some very basic common sense principles applied to the presentation.

  • Cyndi Lauper - Englewood, NJ 8-16-09

by Guest789 on 8/18/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Being the last show on the leg of this particular tour, Cyndi Lauper rocked down the house. She performed songs off her pre solo fame "Blue Angel" album as well as covered her major hits along with some from her newer CD, "Bring Ya' to the Brink." In addition, timeless standards classics as "At Last" and Joni Mitchell's "Carey" earned her endless standing ovations. It was a lifespan of her career though music. Being a musical icon as she is , Lauper is truly a highly energetic, timeless and classy act. A must-see performer as Lauper's voice is incomparable between a live setting and a recording.

  • Cyndi Great always

by NiterunnerNJ on 8/18/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Cyndi looked fab of course and put her all into every song as she always does. She played for almost 2 hours and the show did not drag once. Her opening band, a female power trio from Canada was pretty good, better than the guys she had a couple of years ago.

  • Cyndi Lauper is GREAT

by tedm99 on 8/18/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

I was blown away. Cyndi is awesome!!!! She looked great, and sounded wonderful, she hasn't aged a day in the past 20 years. What a great show!!!! I am one of her her biggest fans, and my family was so excited that I got a chance to see her again. The last time I saw her in person was when she filmed her video in Wharton, New Jersey. TIME AFTER TIME. I was so happy to get her program at the end of the show, she is truly beautiful. Thank you Cyndi for an unforgettable night!!! PS. Great idea, thanks for asking people to donate food, nobody should go hungry.

  • Cyndi wows the crowd!!

by Graphartist on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Cyndi Lauper displayed one of the finest sets of pipes on a female artist that I've ever heard! She played her big hits and new material including a medley that included Iko Iko. She danced in the audience frequently. She bantered with the audience as she shared some personal anecdotes. She had some young girls from the audience( and the opening band, Hunter Valentine),join her onstage for Girls Just Want To Have Fun .She danced around the stage all evening, displaying an amazing amount of energy. She really only played the pedal steel guitar on 3 or 4 songs.Ms. Lauper did about 3 encores and left everyone in the audience satisfied.

  • Cyndi rocks

  • Cyndi Lauper was incredible !!!!!

by keeper122 on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

From start to finish the show was awesome. Saw her in Atlantic City 2 years ago may have gotten better if that is possible. Liked the fact that she talked to fans more this concert which made it a little more personal. She made you feel like a friend. Still looks and sounds like she did in the 70's. Great entertainer!!

  • Cyndi is the consummate artist.

by BoyWhoJustWantsToHaveFun on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Cyndi is a vivacious alternative pixie with an effervescent spirit, superior showmanship, inspired song writing skills, formidable musicianship, and EXTRAORDINARY vocals. In my view, she's one of the most underrated artists of our time. I've seen Mick Jagger and Tina Turner live -- and Cyndi is BETTER! Last night's concert was amazing, as always! I especially enjoyed her renditions of "Goonies R Good Enough," "Money Changes Everything," and "True Colors." Also, "At Last" was beautiful and really showcased her vocals. At times, Cyndi ran up and down the aisles, climbed on chairs, and admonished the security guard that fans are allowed to approach her. Suggestions/Criticisms: I would have liked to hear a few acoustic songs. Also, I could have done without the two Blue Angels songs and the Joni Mitchell "silver" song -- especially since those slots could have been filled by fantastic songs from Cyndi's solo career (e.g., "Shine," "Grab a Hold," "That's What I Think," "Insecurious," "A Night to Remember," "Dancing with a Stranger," "I Don't Want to Be Your Friend," "Heading West," etc.). Cyndi should have prefaced "True Colors" with a brief statement about equal rights -- or at least a comment about how the song honors her friend "Blue," a man who is no longer with us. re. the venue: BergenPAC is an intimate space (which is ideal for concerts). However, it was too warm; the air conditioning was insufficient. re. volume: As with most concerts, the volume should have been turned down a few notches.

  • Lauper unequivocally is a master.

by musicforall on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Cyndi, opened the show with energy rivaling that of much younger performs. She is the consummate perform and story teller. It is a must see show.

  • Cyndi still shows she can rock it!

by Sankofa on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

The entire show was amazing. Cyndi made it personal, talking to the audience and performing in the seats and aisle. I have seen many artists in many venues and this concert was definitely one of the best I have ever seen.

  • Chris

by Nutleyyte on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 1 out of 5

She started about an hour and a half late. Could not get the amps to work. She seemed HIGH and never even spoke the audience to apologize or thank us for waiting . The place was HOT inside and she rambled and rambled in between songs. I ended up leaving after a Jodi Mitchell song .

  • alot of fun

  • Cyndi was good. Venue not so much

by MeatFXE on 8/17/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 3 out of 5

The opening act was good. The only problem was that the songs all sounded the same. The sound was a little muddy. Cyndi put on a good performance. Her vocals were too low and the theater was hot as hell! They need better AC.
