Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets — whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War — joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

    Carry the flag!!!!!

    by Number3Fan on 10/18/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

Great game.......amazing seats. CBJ did a great job honoring the pediatric cancer patients. Ryan Salmons' jersey on the bench as a tribute to one of their own team mates was a reminder of how Ryan touched so many hearts! Thanks to the CBJ organization & foundation for all the hard work and amazing things they do behind the scenes.

    Blue Jackets opening game

    by jacketsfan14 on 10/5/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

The excitement at Nationwide Arena was a carry over from the April 23rd playoff game against Detroit. The red, white, and blue arch the Jackets skated through for introductions was awesome and things never let up the entire game. To hear fans chanting "Let go Jackets" in the stairwell while filing out after the game was musical. The Blue Jackets have a lot of talent on the team and should have a great season!

loved the pre-game. thanks for keeping the opening sequence the same (changing from civil war to hockey). the 50/50 drawing was a nice touch. also loved the addition of the "boom jackets".

    Great time at Opening Night!

by HockeyJunkie on 10/5/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

Pretty simply, the game was a great time! The crowd was juiced, the team put on a simple, but classy pregame show and the atmosphere was just great all around. I do like the addition of the Drum Line. Don't like the name (The BOOM Jackets?) but it was something very different from your typical NHL game. More like a college game, but that's fine because I love the college game. Nice job, Blue Jackets!

    Opening Night Win!

Hard to find any flaws in a perfect evening. Energy in the building was amazing and propelled the Jackets to their first win of the season.

NHL Hockey - Best sport by far

    by skyhawk348 on 10/4/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

Great game, great atmosphere...just a very fun night for all. Concession prices being raised was a little surprising with the economy in Ohio the way it is, but outside of that, great night. Go Jackets!

Blue Jackets give the fans what we wanted

by bluegrasslover on 10/4/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

The Jackets started out the season with a win that was just what the fans wanted. Since we came into the league the same year as the Minnesota Wild, it is always a good measuring stick to see how we compare. The crowd was electric and Steve Mason delivered an outstanding performance between the pipes. Don't wait to jump on this train which is heading toward another play off season. We even got to see a short handed goal, and since R. J. Umberger is one of the team leaders, this gives OSU fans reason to celebrate. Come on out, it is great family fun. My son and I will be taking in at least five more regular season games before the real fun begins.

This is my 4th CBJ game and I have to say I was more hyped about this one than any of the other ones. :D I took my 3.5 year old and he enjoyed being there. He was even cheering. Was a night to remember.

    Blue Jackets Win

by youngmichael on 10/4/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

First professional hockey game, I attended. It was a good time. Seats weren't as close as I would have liked but still decent seats and I could see all the action. I waited for one of those fights between teams and players but it didn't happen. Many of the fans were dressed in Blue Jacket attire and supported their players. It was a sport-like atmosphere and the Blue Jackets won. The event was more than I expected. I will probably go again. Only downfall, it was colder in the venue than I thought it would be.

    Game exceeded my expectations

    by hockeygirl61 on 10/4/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

From beginning to end, this game was awesome. Columbus really put on a great show in the pre-game entertainment and I was so happy to be a part of it all. I'm thrilled that I was there for this game and so close to the ice. This was well worth a two hour drive from Cincinnati.
