Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets — whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War — joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

The Blue Jackets started the season with a great game against the Minnesota Wild, The Jackets rewarded the sell-out crowd with a 2-1 victory.

    Let's Go Jackets!

by djaladin on 10/4/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

Nationwide Arena is an awesome atmosphere for hockey. Everytime I have gone, it's been a fantastic evening out. Last night I took my 8 year old son for his first regular season game and created a Blue Jackets fan for life! If you've never been to a game, treat yourself. It is a great time no matter what you age.

    Good experience

    by david67 on 9/29/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

Everything went as planned. Tickets arrived a day before the hockey game. Included with the tickets were the coupons for a hotdog, popcorn and a drink. We had to get all three food items at one time. It would have been nice to come back later for the popcorn. It was difficult to care everything. Seats were good. Everybody had a good time.

Family Pack at Blue Jackets is Great Value

by EthansNana on 9/28/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

This is a great way to share a hockey game with children. The package is very affordable and includes a hot dog, drink, and popcorn so you don't have to spend any extra money once you arrive. The seats are up high, but for young children (and adults that aren't sure they would like hockey) it offers a great view of all of the plays. We have purchased this package 4 different times and have not been disappointed.

    5-2 WIN!!!!

    by cb124808 on 9/26/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

I was a little disappointed that the majority of fans seemed to be there to watch the pens play, as I noticed I was one of about 10 blue jackets fans in my section, but the game was amazing, and I was pumped to be able to see John Moore play!!

    Nationwide arena does it right.

by pensfaninky on 9/25/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

Besides the fact that my team lost, I enjoyed the atmosphere at Nationwide. It is a great arena with great views from almost everywhere. The one annoying thing is that after every blue jackets goal they fire a big cannon that is so loud it hurts your ears. But if it gets fans fired up for hockey...I love it! Hopefully when I go next month, I'll see a Penguins win.

    Preseason games are still awesome!

by BuckeyeWarrior on 9/25/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

I've attended both regular season and preseason games and the hype around them are very similar. I loved my experience last night while attending the Penguins vs. Jackets game. Nationwide is honestly one of the best venues out there and preseason or not, it's always fun to watch the young Jackets team beat up on other teams!

    Preseason Punch

by CBJultimatefan on 9/25/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

A great hockey game! OK, I know it is just preseason, but the Pens threw their tough lines at our young players and we scored 5 goals. Lots of fun!

    His two favorite teams

by Millermolson on 9/25/09Nationwide Arena - Columbus

I bought the tickets for my sons 18th Birthday. It was a huge gift! Instead of the seats in the nosebleed section we went all out and got ones a few rows from the ice. Two days before the game he got sick and the doctor put him in isolation so he didn't get to go. He was very upset needless to say. He gave the tickets to his father and brother who were able to enjoy them.

No goaltending but a great offense! Overall a very entertaining game! Wish more people would show up for preseason games.

I made it to about a dozen Columbus Blue Jackets games last year and hope to exceed that this year. I've never failed to be entertained by them.
