About

Christopher Cross made history when his debut self-titled album was released in 1980.  The album featured the international hit songs Sailing, Run Like the Wind and Never Be The Same. It went on to win five Grammy Awards, including—for the first time ever—the four most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also for “Sailing”), and Best New Artist.  An extraordinary song writer, Cross wrote all these songs and another of the most famous songs of the time - “Arthurs Theme (The best that you can do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach & Peter Allen and featured in the film Arthur that starred Liza Minelli and Dudley Moore.    Arthur’s Theme won the 1981 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Christopher Cross has also worked with some music greats and shared the stage with some music icons – from Mike McDonald – who sang backing vocals on Ride Like The Wind through to singing backing vocals with Carl Wilson on David Lee Roth’s version of California Girls.

Early in his career Christopher Cross and his band were the opening band for Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull whilst in 1970 he subbed in for Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple for a show in San Antonio.

Thirty years since his stellar debut into the music business, Cross continues recording and touring across the nation, stopping at venues such as the Depot (Salt Lake City). He has released multiple albums and continued to contribute to film and tv soundtracks – including shows such as 30 Rock (he wrote Lemon’s Theme for the soundtrack).

His most recent album, Secret Ladder was released in 2014. The 13 track album, influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman, was written mostly with Rob Meurer and again Cross has worked with the finest musicians including bassist Will Lee (of the Fab Faux and Late Night with David Letterman), drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan and Toto), guitarist Eric Johnson, saxophonist David Mann, and vocalists Michael McDonald and Jeff Foskett (Brian Wilson’s musical director.

I’d forgotten how talented this guy is. His concert is refreshing, innovative, thouroughly entertaining and very cleverly constructed, directed, and executed. THE BEST - a GREAT evening!

  • Good show but...

Leaned a little too heavy on the backup singers to sing lead

  • Everything you want in a show

by EricC on 2/25/19Center Stage Theater - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Christopher Cross did not disappoint. This was yet another show that my wife and I figured we would never get the opportunity to see, so perhaps our expectations were unreasonably high. Even still, every one of them was met if not exceeded. Yes, Christopher Cross has been performing pretty much as long as I’ve been alive and I’m 47, so there were a couple of songs that probably weren’t exactly as you would remember them, but nothing was less than what I would consider excellent. I learned things about the man that I never knew even though I consider myself a tremendous fan of his. I had no idea that he could absolutely shred on the guitar the way that he can. I was also very pleased to learn of his tremendous personality and sense of humor. Most artists, if they are able to sell tickets to a show at all, can convey the performance part with some degree of skill. It is the select few that are able to do that as well as truly connect with their audience. Christopher Cross did both masterfully. The only regret I had leaving that show that night was that I hadn’t had the opportunity to see him before.

Center Stage is a cool venue. Not a bad seat in the house.

  • Hard To Get Cross With Christopher

by JohnofArt on 2/25/19Center Stage Theater - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

It seems like yesterday when he commanded the airways. That is life for a sixty year old. The years, well, they ride like the wind. But that is another story. My wife is a child of seventies, being born in 72. I a child of the Sixties, being born in 57. Our music, well, it ain't exactly the same. I'm a Beatle. She a metal head. So without asking or telling, I bought us tickets to see Christopher Cross, and sprung the date on her at last minute. It is easier to ask forgiveness than permission. She knew his music. She would have to have lived under a rock not to know his tunes. We drove to Atlanta after work Friday, and let me tell you his music was as enjoyable to her as it was to me. He was a consummate performer, an accomplished guitarist, and a congenial artist whose repartee with the audience was heartfelt. His band was tight. The back-up singers were wonderful--each with woman had an incredible voice. And Chris did not mind allowing his bandmates to shine. He was a generous performer. Because of his generosity and their professionalism, the entire evening was incredible. And the audience--most of whom were nearer my age than hers--fully appreciated his music and his presentation. And for the record, he is not too old to be that minstrel gigolo. He may have aged, but like wine, just got finer with the passing of time. And for about two hours he made me feel young again. And at my age, that is a good thing.

  • Wanted to love this concert

    by L. R. on 2/25/19Center Stage Theater - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

As a big fan, I was so excited for this concert, but we could not hear Christopher Cross' voice at all, it was as if he was mumbling. You could hear the back up singers more than the star's voice. Was this the Sound Technician's fault? I don't think so. Also, in behind the band, they played very dated videos with each song, that often didn't have anything to do with the songs...very distracting and of extreme poor quality. I'll continue to love Christopher Cross, but only by listening to his early recordings.

  • Overall was good but didn’t play my favorite song

by J. Smith on 2/25/19Center Stage Theater - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was good, but was disappointed that Think of Laura was not played considering it was a hit.

  • Just okay.

by Shoppehead on 2/25/19Center Stage Theater - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Band was outstanding. Sax player was a beast. I have been a Chris Cross fan since I was a little kid. I knew going in that he wasn't a charismatic performer, but I was disappointed in his vocal performance. He left about 40% of the lead vocal duties to his backup singers, and besides the old material, the songwriting was all over the place. The video montages were too busy and didn't necessarily support the music. I also found the videos distracting. When I would look away and just listen, it was better. It wasn't a bad show. It just wasn't as good as I expected.

  • Better than expected

by DeanC on 2/25/19Center Stage Theater - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

I knew I enjoyed the hits but wasn't familiar with much else. I came out with a new respect for the man. I thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor and the show was great from start to finish. His voice was a little weak as he seemed to be a little tentative with the high notes, but overall, very good

  • Great show

    by P. C. on 2/22/19The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

Christopher Cross was great. He sang all his hits and some newer songs. He sang Sailing twice and we loved it. His band is awesome!!!! Please come back to Chattanooga.

  • A quiet man with a loud message

by DaveB on 2/22/19The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

The first two songs were hampered by an electrical grounding issue making vocals very hard to hear. After a few adjustments sound quality and performance were wonderful. A masterful conversationalist added value to the performance. A keen sense on humor thrown into the mix made for additional value. Christopher Cross and much of his audience has matured through the years, but the youthfulness in his voice carries on. A splendid performance by the entire entourage made a most enjoyable evening.

  • It was great!

    by A. R. on 2/22/19The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

Set list was great but maybe could have added either Swept Away or when She Smiles.

  • Exceptional Performers

by KP on 2/22/19The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

Christopher Cross and all of the members of this show were incredible performers. Christopher takes his work very seriously and delivers a flawless guitar and vocal presentation, but he blew us away by the musicians he surrounded himself with! In every song the saxophonist would have you on your feet with excitement. Shear perfection with backup vocals, drummer, keyboard, and bass. This was so much more than I expected. What a thrilling show!

  • Great venue

by C Forte on 2/22/19The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were great very Roomy (we did sit 3 rd row ) only seats 400 so it was very intimate

  • Christopher Cross's ensemble made for great music!

    by T. F. on 2/22/19Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Christopher Cross's musical talent has remained steady over the years and his ability to refresh his old music into a more polished performance was quite evident. The wonderful interplay with his supporting musicians giving marvelous jazz like renditions especially by the horn and saxophone player were the highlight of the concert. Just before Christophers' last song he commented on how everything seems so challenging now but maybe there is still hope, and ended with a stirring rendition of "Imagine" (by John Lennon). It was a fitting ending for all.

  • Wonderful show, legend

by ChipinTN on 2/21/19Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed the show and his banter with the crowd. The best was when he explained why he played Sailing about the 3rd or 4th song. He talk to this love for Frank Sinatra who was always prompt. And how funny it is when people come in late to the concert and say to their neighbor I can't wait till he plays Sailing. Don't be late. Had a fantastic group of players and the background singers were featured throughout this numbers. The only song that didn't sound fantastic to to me was his biggest hit that started at all, ride like the wind. Like most artist with longevity he has many more hits than you realize.

  • Boring and not what I expected from a professional musician.

    by W. on 2/21/19Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

For the amount of money we paid to see him it was disappointing for a number of reasons: While the drummer and sax player performance was borderline excellent, Chris guitar playing at best was acceptable but boring. Sometimes we could not understand his words. He and his band, except for the piano player were dressed like slobs. Really visually unpleasant. The white back up singer was bad. The black back up singer sounded good and looked and acted professionally. The background videos were dated and uninspired and there were fingerprints on the screen as the lens wasn't clean. The audio was fine.
