CHRISSIE HYNDE IN CONCERT:

New wave icon Chrissie Hynde became a superstar in the '80s with The Pretenders, lending her swaggering croon to effortlessly cool hits like "Brass in Pocket" and "Back in the Chain Gang". More than three decades later Hynde is as vital as ever -- her 2014 solo debut album Stockholm was a critical and commercial success, landing on charts around the world and drawing her out for a highly anticipated tour. Her beloved contralto voice hasn't changed a lick, sounding as fresh as ever on new cuts like "Dark Sunglasses" and "You Or No One". Hynde described the new album as "Abba meets John Lennon", and she's not off the mark -- her dance-worthy live shows combine the best of disco, rock, and pop, making for a must-see concert experience fans won't soon forget.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Akron, Ohio-born Chrissie Hynde had her eye on rock stardom from an early age. In high school she frequently traveled to Cleveland to see shows, and after attending art school she moved to London to be closer to the UK music scene. Her time abroad involved a veritable who's who of the British music world -- she wrote for the renowned music magazine NME under the eye of critic Nick Kent, worked at Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's legendary SEX clothing shop, and toured with Mick Jones in an early incarnation of The Clash. After several stints in other bands, Hynde formed The Pretenders in 1978. The band's self-titled 1979 debut album launched them to stardom overnight, topping the UK Albums Chart and spawning the seminal No. 1 single "Brass in Pocket". A string of acclaimed albums followed over the next three decades including Pretenders II (1981), Last of the Independents (1994), and Break Up the Concrete (2008), which the band accompanied with extensive worldwide touring. In 2014 Hynde made her solo debut with the album Stockholm, a critical success that stands with her best work with The Pretenders. A veteran live performer known for her grit, attitude, and one-of-a-kind voice, she continues to captivate ticket buyers with career-spanning performances on tour.

What can I say? Chrissy Hynde and her back kicked major ass!! The Pantages was a remarkable venue to see this show!! And it was an amazing show, not soon to be forgotten. Old songs and new alike, they were amazing!! The openers the Rails were a great choice too! I'll be there next time she's around!

    Really?

by Sel4more on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This was to be the last box checked on my bucket list of concerts / bands to see, and while it got checked I wished it hadn't. Chrissie spent the first half or two-thirds chasing people away because they held up their cell phones, then relented at the end by saying, "aww, F it, go ahead" - how do you think the guys who were kicked out felt after hearing that?? Band was tight, didn't play a couple of her monster hits I can only assume due to bad blood or memories. Oh well......still love her old stuff, maybe I was anticipating too much but the cell phone thing was silly.

She clearly has a thing about pictures.

by BigErn16 on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Sang great. Great voice. Why she wouldn't play 2 of her best songs ever is a mistery.(Brass in pocket/mistery achievement). I understand why the Pretenders had all those changes through the years now, She is a huge witch.

    Chrissie Hynde is Bada$$

by CaptBackfire on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Chrissie Hynde showed us all that she hasn't slowed down one bit or lost either her edge or her voice. Fronting an amazing band of men half her age, she powered through an evening of both the familiar and the unfamiliar. The old folks were dancing in the aisles and the youngsters were feeling the power of rock and roll. She is not, however, a fan of the smartphone camera. Be prepared to be publicly humiliated if she sees you pointing one her way when she's up on stage. And she's right; we tend to experience our lives from behind a small glass screen instead of paying full attention to what's going on in front of us. So if you go to see her, be in the moment with her.

    Excellent!

Chrissie was on her mark. Loved the new cuts. Pretenders tunes sounded like original band. Could have listened to another hour of her jams.

    Hynde still delivers

by LMSA on 12/8/14Pantages - Los Angeles

Solid show for sure! Chrissie and her 4-piece band put on a fierce, fast-paced, punkish set that was super tight. Can't believe she's 63 now (doesn't look a day older than late 40s) and her voice is pristine. Totally proved to still be a defiant rocker when she stopped the show a few times to call out the few a*ses who, despite the venue's many warnings, insisted on taking pics and filming. (Try sitting next to one of those ijits who light up your visual space the entire show; frankly her surliness over the matter was welcomed ...) And she closed the show after 2 encores w/ one of my favs & a xmas treat, 2000 Miles. Loved it!!

by Kimba617 on 12/8/14Arlington Theatre - Santa Barbara

Wow! What a show! I can't believe that she is 63. She is still so cool and her voice is in top form. I loved that she kept getting pissed at people who had their phones out. This was definitely one of the best shows ever!!

    Amazing evening!

by TimX on 12/8/14Pantages Theatre - Hollywood

Chrissie came on blazing! She's started the night with some slower numbers and then worked her way into faster paced material. I love the album "Stockholm" and thought she showcased the songs very well . I thought it was a great set list with many Pretenders songs included. Her voice sounds almost the same as it did back in the day. Absolutely impeccable! Yes, she did get pissed off at a few people who can't read clearly written paper signs { at least 50 -100 inside and out of the venue } and who can't listen to the announcements { least 6 times } not to use your cell phone in any way during the performance. I have no problem with people using them and do it myself but she clearly didn’t want it happening at her show. RESPECT HER WISHES! Is it really that hard? Check you entitlement issues at the door! The tour merchandise was great a totally affordable. A nice shirt was $20 and the mugs were was $10. That's unheard of now. Thanks for that! What a great night!

Chrissie was awesome she rocked she sounded so good just like inthe 80's! She rocked and she ca still play the guitar! I liked how she didn't like the cell phone cameras on but she did let everyone take pictures at the end! I wore my T-shirt from 1981SB Bowl concert I hope she saw me wearing it?

    Still rocking.

by Anonymous on 12/8/14Arlington Theatre - Santa Barbara

This Lady can still bring down the house. By the third song everyone was on their feet and dancing. Pretenders songs were the favs, of course, but cuts from the new album were met with hootin and hollerin and cheerin just as loud. Chrissie was engaging with us, wisecracking and chiding her bandmates. She still loves what she does and I don't think any one left feeling cheated.

Chrissie CAN get any man she wants

by huka56 on 12/5/14The Masonic - San Francisco

Between her new songs and some classic and rare Pretenders songs (she took Tattoed Love Boys to a whole new level); her new band rocked harder than some of the last/previous incarnations of the Pretenders.... She is the GREAT pretender, as her into music stated.

    Chrissie is IT!

by gramparocker on 12/5/14The Masonic - San Francisco

Best concert of the year! Chrissie has so much energy and talent. She was in full audience control and loveing it. There had been a few mixed reviews of her new tour without the pretenders-I saw no evidence of any hesitation tonight she had all the kinks worked out. Full on rocking right from the start. The new band is excellent with James Walbourne on lead guitar. And Chrissie is better than ever. Rock On Chrissie! Venue is perfect.

I wish it was Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders

by Jay00 on 12/5/14Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I used to be a huge Chrissie Hynde & Pretenders fan. Why is she trying to 're-invent' herself? This "new" music she performed is terrible- not a memorable melody or lyric among them. I kept hoping for "Stand By Me" and "Forever Young"- but NO LUCK. The very few Pretenders stuff she performed was well done. The band has some excellent musicians, but the 'chemistry' is just not there. A very disappointing evening! Where do I go for a refund? :(

    Amazing music and performance!

by gritH on 12/4/14Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Loved the mix of new and old material, Chrissie's voice is as awesome as ever, and the musicians were outstanding. Only low note was the frequent flashing of spotlights into the audience - we want to see the performers, not be blinded by the light!

Chrissie Hynde not at her best

by Sugi1 on 12/3/14Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I have seen the Pretenders- Chrissie Hynde probably 4-5 times over the past 30-years, I know that she is with a new band now, but I felt that she didn't have the same energy that she usually brings. The overall set was only about 90-mins total, she did do a few of the old stuff, but not enough of the great hits. Her focus seemed on telling the audience/paid guests not to have their cameras on and she didn't want to sign my old Pretenders album that I had with me at the front of the stage. Don't know why she didn't want us to take any pixs? I thought the more exposure the better? I can't understand why she really didn't want to warm up the audience more?
