CHRISSIE HYNDE IN CONCERT:

New wave icon Chrissie Hynde became a superstar in the '80s with The Pretenders, lending her swaggering croon to effortlessly cool hits like "Brass in Pocket" and "Back in the Chain Gang". More than three decades later Hynde is as vital as ever -- her 2014 solo debut album Stockholm was a critical and commercial success, landing on charts around the world and drawing her out for a highly anticipated tour. Her beloved contralto voice hasn't changed a lick, sounding as fresh as ever on new cuts like "Dark Sunglasses" and "You Or No One". Hynde described the new album as "Abba meets John Lennon", and she's not off the mark -- her dance-worthy live shows combine the best of disco, rock, and pop, making for a must-see concert experience fans won't soon forget.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Akron, Ohio-born Chrissie Hynde had her eye on rock stardom from an early age. In high school she frequently traveled to Cleveland to see shows, and after attending art school she moved to London to be closer to the UK music scene. Her time abroad involved a veritable who's who of the British music world -- she wrote for the renowned music magazine NME under the eye of critic Nick Kent, worked at Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's legendary SEX clothing shop, and toured with Mick Jones in an early incarnation of The Clash. After several stints in other bands, Hynde formed The Pretenders in 1978. The band's self-titled 1979 debut album launched them to stardom overnight, topping the UK Albums Chart and spawning the seminal No. 1 single "Brass in Pocket". A string of acclaimed albums followed over the next three decades including Pretenders II (1981), Last of the Independents (1994), and Break Up the Concrete (2008), which the band accompanied with extensive worldwide touring. In 2014 Hynde made her solo debut with the album Stockholm, a critical success that stands with her best work with The Pretenders. A veteran live performer known for her grit, attitude, and one-of-a-kind voice, she continues to captivate ticket buyers with career-spanning performances on tour.

    no pretenders here

by MAC13 on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

CH hasn't lost a step: voice was strong and rock solid. Best song ended the show: 2000 miles and it's Christmas time, the crowd went wild. Love this girl.

    Simply Amazing

by FanFan2014 on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I’ve been to many Pretenders concerts since 1982 and I have to say Chrissie Hynde was slammin! The band was tight the sound and vocals were great – simply amazing. Loved the new material and appreciated hearing the old material. Down side – got annoyed with the interruptions due to the cell phone issues.

    Rock Star Diva!

by RenL on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Chrissie Hynde is one of the greatest frontwomen in rock history! She played a lot of great songs, although didn't play Mystery Achievement, Middle of the Road, and BRASS IN POCKET!! She sounded great, although i didn't expect her to be such a DIVA not wanting pictures taken, and threatening to leave. I still love her, but don't want to be policed by not just the ushers, but the artist too!

Chrissie Hynde needs to enter the digital age

by Benefitofthedoubt on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I've dug Chrissie Hynde's voice from the first I heard it and it's as strong as ever. She should have used it to sing rather than threaten she'd walk off if she saw someone using a cell phone. It's a losing battle unless she's going to frisk and cavity search everyone coming to her concerts. The openers The Rails were superb thank goodness.

Chrissie Hynde & The band will travel ROCKED!!!!!

by Michelle21rocker on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Chrissie and the boys ROCKED The Pantages Theatre. They played all her ole school classics along with her new songs. Her new music is awesome. Chrissie still has it, her vocie was so pure raw and rocking. The music & lyrics takes me back to my young ole school times in Jr high and high school and into my adulthood. Chrissie commands her stage and audience. She does not like the cell phone/photo use at all. She is easily distracted. She stopped the concert 5 times and let people in the audience know she did not want ANY photo's calls or video going on. She is a tough cookie that's for sure. But I get it she wants everyone in the moment to enjoy her concert. Life has changed with the ell phone use. During the encore she spoke to the crowd and thanked them for not using the cell phone photo's and then said ok go ahead and get your pictures. Once she played a couple songs she then was getting iritated again by how many of the cell phones went up and stayed up, Like she said and i am quoting her " You all look stupid" holding the phones. Otherwise the concert was incredible and I Love Chrissie no matter what, she will always be apart of my young crazy youth. :) The Pretenders ROCK!

    Amazing Show with Chrissie Hynde

by LindaTaylor on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I've never been to the Pantages Theatre before and it's really nice inside. The seats were good no matter where you sat because you could see the stage from every angle. This was my first time seeing the Pretenders and it was money well spent. Chrissie was great she sounded good, her music was good and she look good. I was very pleased with the show!!! The only downfall was the audience and their rudeness with their stupid cell phones. They had no respect to the artist to stay off their cell phones and not take photos when asked several times. She was very annoyed by it and so was I.

Maybe the best frontwoman in rock history?

by TomtheMusicSnob on 12/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Chrissie Hynde is arguably the greatest frontwoman in rock history. She appears to have not lost too many steps over the year, as her voice still sounds the same as during her prime with the Pretenders, and her songwriting remains strong. This show was a great mix of good new material from her solo album plus some choice Pretenders tunes. The audience at this was hard-core, for sure, going crazy for the old stuff. Her young band was quite good and capable of handling the classic stuff. Highly recommended. Oh - and she definitely does NOT like people to use cameraphones so leave them in your pocket and just be in the moment and enjoy the show.

    The Chick Can Rock

by FMJackie on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Chrissie Hynde brought it to the Pantages! She can still rock, sing, and entertain the crowd like she did in the 80s. Unfortunately, the audience did not behave like we did in the 80s. After repeated announcements about no cell phone use, Chrissie stopped in the middle of her first song to call out a man in the audience who refused to put his phone away. She threatened to walk off stage, but never did. Ushers were busy shining flashlights on other offending audience members throughout the show. The women sitting behind me talked and laughed throughout the show, raising their voices so they could hear each other during my favorite songs. I left happy having seen one of my favorite artists perform but discouraged by having to share the experience with an audience of people who weren't really interested in the show.

    Pantages Theater - Chrissie Hynde

by Howie on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This women never ceases to amaze me. Having witnessed several concerts down the west coast over the years from the Pretenders, she is timeless. Perfect voice great songs/melodies and fantastic band who provide a sound which is unique. Great presence Chrissie was annoyed from the start with an audience member insisting on taking pictures from his/her cell phone when asked not too. A true professional she kept focused and even had time to introduce the band. Highly recommended to anyone who loves the 80's !

    Flawless

by MelroseMan on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Perfect venue, fantastic opener, excellent band, and Chrissie Hynde was phenomenal (as always). Also it was refreshing that she had people put away the camera phones. How amazing to just see the stage rather than a sea of video screens that are brighter than the stage and people texting during the show. You really got to focus on the music and the performances.

    Could've Been A Cleaner Sound....

by Trailwaif on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Stockholm did not play. An acoustic duo called the Rails opened with a new album out called Fair Warning and they were pretty good and very full sounding for a duo. When Chrissie Hynde came on, the sounds was lacking in dynamics and clarity from where I was, and certain instruments as well as most of her vocals were not distinct. The effect was like a constant continuous volume wall of sound for every song. Hard to tell what the new songs were really like. Maybe it was where I was sitting but it was just kind of monotonous. I have wanted to see her for years, and while she was obviously in good voice, it just didn't come across.

    Chrissie was Perfection !

by Tompizzo on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Chrissie Hynde has the same amazing set of pipes She had in her twenties, She was perfection . The young band , not an original Pretender in the group , was fresh and sharp, played as if they knew this music for 30 years. Chrissie still has that tough girl personality, She had the audience on there feet most of the night, heaven help you if you use your cell phone during the concert , I loved it !

Great show by a great artist!!

by SJCNY on 12/9/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

It's remarkable how strong and intact her voice is after all these years, she never sounded better! The band was spot on!! It seemed as if the audience was really enjoying the show as well, except for that one person she had removed for taking photos with their phone. They were on the stage for about an hour & a half, and it was 50/50 Pretenders/Stockholm songs. The sound quality was phenomenal; if you're a Pretenders or Chrissie fan, this show is a must see, you will not be disappointed!
