Squeeze great, Cheap Trick disappointing.
by necessaryangel on 7/19/10The Mann Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5Obviously this is an odd pairing. I'm considering them co-headliners, given that Squeeze played just as long (maybe longer) than Cheap Trick. We went primarily to see Squeeze, but I like Cheap Trick, too -- Rick Nielson is a guitarist's guitarist. Squeeze played most of their biggest hits ("Annie Get Your Gun," "Black Coffee in Bed," "Cool for Cats," "Tempted"), fan favorites ("Up the Junction," "Is that Love?"), and a few deeper cuts ("When the Hangover Strikes"), then actually came back out for an encore of "Pulling Mussels from the Shell." Glenn Tilbrook still has an amazing voice, though he got a little raspy on a couple of high notes, and as you can see on a bunch of Youtube clips, he's an outstanding guitarist. In comparison, Cheap Trick seemed a little, well, old. Robin Zander needs a new look: men with that receded a hairline shouldn't be wearing a pony tail. Bun E. Carlos was not there (the drummer's name sounded like "Max Neilson -- Rick's son, maybe?). Tom Petersson barely registered. Rick showed he is still a great musician. But they seemed to be phoning it in. They barely played for 75 minutes, including the break before the one encore song. Also, I'm used to loud shows, but they had the volume turned up so high that the Mann Center's system couldn't handle it. The distortion was so bad that it took me about 30 seconds to recognize "Magical Mystery Tour."
