Carolina Hurricanes History

The Carolina Hurricanes were established in Raleigh in 1997 after relocating from Hartford, Connecticut, where the National Hockey League franchise was originally founded in 1979. Since their arrival in North Carolina, the Hurricanes have made the playoffs ten times, captured six division championships, two Eastern Conference titles and the 2006 Stanley Cup Championship.

The team also hosted the 2004 NHL Draft and the 2011 NHL All-Star Game at PNC Arena, where they play their home games. When the Hurricanes made the playoffs in 2001, against the defending Stanley Cup Champions New Jersey Devils, they lost the series but came back from a 3-0 deficit to force a sixth game — marking what many believed to be the start of real hockey in the Research Triangle.

The 2005-2006 season marked the best in the Hurricanes' history, as the team finished with 112 points, beating the previous franchise-best record of 94 points. They ended up beating the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, marking the first time in NHL history that two former World Hockey Association teams faced off in the Final.

In 2019, the arena hosted the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 10 years and set a single-game record with 19,495 fans in attendance. Hooked on Hockey

by Valligirl on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

As a first time hockey attendee, I was instantly energized by the crowd's enthusiasm. Although I am unfamiliar with the rules of the game, the fast-paced action brought me to my feet numerous times. This was such a positive experience for me, I plan to attend several games next season. I am now tuned in to hockey Carolina style!

    Pens Crushed the Canes

by PensRule on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

Awesome seeing the Pens crush the Canes in the final game of the series sweep. It was cool to see a decent presence of Pens fans in the Triangle too! The lowlight was seeing Cowher in the stands cheering for the Canes. As one fan put it, "Seeing Cowher cheeing for the Canes was like finding out your dad had another family."

I love going to see the Hurricanes at the RBC... It is the loudest house in the NHL for a reason.

    Great game despite loss

by wandernat on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

This was my first playoff game of any pro sport. Even though the Hurricanes lost, I still had a great time. Canes fans are the best and the Pittsburgh fans weren't too obnoxious, despite winning the series in our hometown. The RBC center was fantastic as usual. The only thing I didn't like is that part of the club level is closed off and you can't walk all the way around. I would also like to see more seating at restaurant-type establishments in the RBC center, you know, for the non-exclusive club attendees. i've seen this at some arenas and i like it.

    Amazing Game!

by caneshockeyfan on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

Even though the outcome was not what I wanted, the game was still a great game to see. The Canes gave it their all, but simply ran out of gas from playing back-to-back tough 7 game series.

    get em next year

by blacknred on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

I think it was a great series and it is a great team to support. Some of the penguins fans were a little inappropriate with their comments/cheering. I would not bring young children to this event.

    Eastern Conference Final Game

    by carolinagirl82 on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

I love going to the Carolina Hurricanes games, but the Stanley Cup run is even better. I bought a ticket to 2 games against the Devils, 1 against Boston and 1 against Pittsburgh. It was the best money I have spent in a long time....Way to go CANES!!!!

    Playoff game was exciting!!

by hoop on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

The overall experience of attending a NHL playoff game was awesome. Definitely would attend again. Wish the tickets weren't so expensive but the convenience of the printable ticket stub was ideal!

    Playoff Hockey!

    by Stantheman13 on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

I've been to several NHL games before but never to a playoff game. This game was unbelievable! I can't begin to describe how impressed I was with the atmosphere and the noise inside the arena. TV just doesn't do it justice! If you haven't ever been to an NHL playoff game before: why not?!?! This experience was so amazing that I went to game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals also. And that was even more amazing!

Eastern Conference Final - What More Can I Say?

    by 54FytingCaniac on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

Although the Canes lost this was a great experience. Parking fees were the same as they were for the regular season and the ECF ticket price was what I expected it to be compared to regular season tickets. The atmosphere at the RBC Center was energetic and enthusiastic. I had a great time with Canes fans and Pens fans

Best Place for a Hockey Game EVER!!!

by Didadave on 7/13/09RBC Center - Raleigh

Even with the loss by my beloved Carolina Hurricanes you can't top the experience of watching NHL Hockey at this venue. There isn't a bad seat in the house and the atmosphere is always electric at the RBC Center.
