CAMEO IN CONCERT:

Funk and soul favorites Cameo have been bringing the heat to the dance floor since the mid-'70s, and they continue to treat fans to a serious groove-a-thon any time they perform their solid gold hits. Rubbery basslines, electro beats, and feel-good call-and-response vocals are the order of business whenever founding member Larry Blackmon and his talented band take the stage, and their party-worthy live shows never fail to transport fans back to the golden age of funk. Ticket buyers can cut a rug to "Word Up," shake a tail feather to "Attack Me With Your Love," or sink their teeth into "Candy" – no matter the track, Cameo delivers the goods with saucy swagger and infectious energy to spare. Fans looking to take a funky walk down memory lane can count on Cameo to lead the way at their booty-shaking shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer Larry Blackmon started Cameo in 1974 amid New York City's fertile funk, soul, and disco scene. The 10-piece group began as the New York City Players (a nod to fellow funksters the Ohio Players), but later changed their name to avoid confusion with the other group. Cameo was a hit right out of the gates – their 1977 debut album Cardiac Arrest cracked the R&B Top 20, spawning club favorites like "Rigor Mortis" and "Funk Funk." The band racked up a string of hits in the late '70s and early '80s, but the height of their success came with 1986's Word Up!, a Platinum-selling smash that topped the charts with its iconic title track and the equally funky "Candy." Cameo remained a fixture on the R&B charts well into the '90s, and in 2001 they once again reached No. 1 when they teamed up with Mariah Carey for "Loverboy," which sampled heavily from their 1986 hit "Candy."  Founding member Larry Blackmon and classic-era member Tomi Jenkins took the band to Sin City in 2016 for a residency at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, and their red-hot performances on the Strip proved they haven't missed a beat.

    Lacking and Misleading

by Jacqueline B on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

I bought tickets on 8-3-22 for this event because it listed the Commodores as the headliner. A few weeks before the event, I was out of state and saw a commercial stating that the Commodores were performing on the same day (12-3-22) in Tunica Resorts, MS. What? How could this be? I received no notice that the Commodores were not going to be a part of this concert. Very frustrating! Additionally, once Cameo came on stage (after a very long equipment set-up), it was obvious and concerning to us as well as other patrons that something was wrong with Larry Blackmon as he appeared to barely make it out onto the stage, moving very slowly and grabbing for the microphone stand to hold himself up. After the first song, he sat on a stool while leaning on the drummers stage for the duration of his performance. Some patrons left after their first song. Larry Blackmon appeared lethargic and struggled to sing, being covered at times by his band. Cameo only performed a few songs, promoting a rap duo that no one had heard of, in some ways taking away from the experience of what we knew as Cameo. This was not a good concert experience and I felt that the promoters had the responsibility to notify ticket buyers that the Commodores would not be a part of this event. Very Dissatisfied.

The concert as a whole was awesome! I danced & sang all nite

by Dovesfly on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

Zapp had the best energy. All the live bands were awesome, actually playing the instruments and the singers, really singing. I was ready for an old school party. However, clearly Larry Blackmon struggles to even walk so Cameo’s energy was lacking. They sounded great though!

He seemed to not be well. Don’t know if he has health issues or there’s another problem. Don’t think I want to see them again.

    Cameo

by D Mitch on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

I grew up on Cameo and although Larry Blackmon wasn’t in the best of health (physically), he still had the voice, the music was on point (minus the small audio issue). I think either Midnight Star or Zapp should’ve closed out the show, because it seemed a bit disrespectful to see people walking out on Cameo.

It’s Time For Cameo to Stop Performing

by Mr. & Mrs. Jones on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

ZAPP was GREAT and should be the featured group. I enjoyed the other groups as well. The DJ was AWESOME. He REALLY added to the concert experience. Cameo was VERY DISAPPOINTING and need to retire. The stage presentation was horrible. We left early. My rating would have been a 5 if not for Cameo.

    Cameo

by Pdub on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

I was pleasantly surprised with how good Zapp was...They really honored Roger! I went to see Cameo but was saddened by the condition of Larry Blackmon. He has given us so much great music, it's OK to step back and let the band thrive...Maurice White stepped back and let EWF continue, and they're still Thriving. Thank you Larry, and get well, your legacy will live on!

All performances for a good except for cameo!

by Boogie on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

I preferred to watch an entertainer “Larry Blackmon”, entertain and not sit down after five minutes. After the start of the performance. Highly disappointed in cameo’s performance. me and my wife actually left early!

    Need a new headliner

by Falbabe on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

This is the second time seeing Cameo and I wasn't impressed. You could tell during the first song how it was going to go. His energy wasn't there and then you are constantly trying to get audience participation instead of just singing the songs. Then walking off stage for periods of time is ridiculous and then the audio had problems too. All the other groups were good and the DJ help keep the audience hyped but when you are the last group and we still have to wait a bit before you come on stage our moment is kind of down. So you need to come out ready to perform songs and not get in your feelings. You are paid to perform for us not the other way around.

    Not what I expected

by Skygirl on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

We left during the second song. It was not a good experience. Could not hardly y the first song and it was horrible. Lead singer could barely stand up. Felt like it was a waste of good talent.

by Lady D on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

The show itself was great. I thought Midnight Star came on to soon. They were amazing. I feel like Zapp shoud have been the headliner. They were in California

    Needs Improvement

by Puglove on 12/6/22Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

The transition between bands was very slow. It was over 4 hours and toward the end folks starting leaving by 3 hour. Cameron was a true disappointment. Music was loud and you couldn’t hear them sing. Midnight Star was amazing. They should have closed the show.
