Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

    Flames preseason Sept. 24+29. 2023.

by Chris Tazzman on 10/2/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I figured I would combine my review for the two preseason games I attended this week. I am a nine-game pack holder in section 203 row 23, but I like these preseason games to catch a game from a bit better seat without breaking the bank. The Flames won 10-0 on Sunday Sept 24 over Vancouver and I was able to get good seats in row 19 section 202 for myself and three others for $124 through Ticketmaster ticket exchange. The game on Friday Sep. 29 I got my cousin (who has never seen a game from the first bowl) and I section 102 row 24 for $135 each which is around the price for a press level seat for a regular season Battle of Alberta. Granted the Oilers never bring any stars down, but it is nice to see a game in the first bowl regardless. Off to tonight's final preseason game against the Jets which is the first game in my pack then it all starts for real Oct. 11. Can't wait, GO FLAMES!!!!!!!

    Flames/Sharks March 25, 2023

by Chris Tazzman on 3/28/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Another great game, Flames won 5-3 on this occasion. I had a great seat in section 203, row 17, seat 11. I had a promo code in December from the Flames 12 Days of Christmas, so it was a bit of a deal as well.

    Old barn

by Matt on 3/5/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Old stadium with character. Seats were good. Limited washrooms on the concourse which makes for long waits. Concourse also crammed more than other arenas. Still a lot of history here. Recommend lower bowl

    Leafs won, Calgary lost

by Bad man on 3/5/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Was in the press level. The hand railings were in my view and people were constantly walking up and down. People have no brains. Hopefully Calgary gets a new rink soon.

    Leafs victorious!

by Tom on 3/5/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I have been on a mission to see the Leafs play in every arena in the NHL, or at least see them play ever team! This was a really good game very exciting lots of actions at both ends.

    Good time

by Bill on 1/24/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Love visiting Calgary. Rink needs to be bigger so hopefully they approve a new one soon… other than that, it’s a great time at the Saddledome

    Nucks fan in the Saddledome

by Mecks on 12/30/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Amazing atmosphere and energy, (far better than the home barn). Can’t wait for a new home though, the concourse is far too tight and washroom lineups are far too long.

Low rent at a high cost

by Caps fan on 12/6/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The facility is in bad shape! The concessions had a limited variety of drinks (3 beers). The cost was high -$125/ ticket for a second tier side seat. I thought the programming at breaks were good, but ultimately the facility needs to be improved. Badly!

    Flames/Caps Dec 3, 2022

by Chris Tazzman on 12/4/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Another great time seeing my beloved Calgary Flames. Flames won 5-2 over the Capitals. Ovi was invisible again. It was my fourth time seeing Ovi play live against the Flames, and he has scored exactly no goals, and chipped in an assist in one of those games back in October 2018. One assist now in four games that I have attended. Good though because I am a Flames fan, but strange. His arch enemy Sydney Crosby has one assist in the three total games that I've seen him play live as well against the Flames. My Flames over the years have limited the stars of that generation to a combined total of 0 goals, 2 assists in 7 games when I park my but in the stands. Saw each of them get stopped in one shootout attempt to boot. Go Flames!!!!!!

    Flames/Avalanche Thursday October 13, 2022

by Chris Tazzman on 10/16/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Thoroughly enjoyed the game, it was opening night for the 2022/23 season. It was a great game, Flames won 5-3, it was their first win in a season opening game in twelve years. Had a great seat too, I was Section 204, Row 21, Seat 8. The cost of $104 is manageable, however it wasn't too long ago that seating level was $63, but I am addicted to going to see the Flames, so I always fork it out. I much prefer sitting in the second bowl for hockey, better sight line to view the game, but not as high up as the press level. I also have two nine game packs this season, but I always end up going to a few additional games through Ticketmaster. I still am old fashion, and I like a printed stub, but I can handle the digital ticketing now through Ticketmaster, so it isn't that difficult using it (I really suck using tech).

    Go flames go

by Chels on 5/25/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

As always the atmosphere is always great, and love that the dome were handing Out tickets for free, but to watch the game on the jumbotron, was kinda difficult. When trying to watch a game on it, it’s not so jumbo after all.

    Great

by Jason white on 5/24/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

It was a great experience .. the only thing I would suggest is maybe the big screen somehow

    Free but dull

by JR on 5/24/22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The free tickets to watch in the big arena was great - but being 2nd round playoffs we expected a bit more hype. Watching it on the Jumbotron was ok but not easy to really see the action. It would have been fantastic if they set up a big screen and had the play by play announced in the arena - it was difficult to hear the announcers. Overall it was cool to be there amongst all the flames fans but there is definitely room for improvement!
