About

Alex More has a story to tell. A struggling actor in L.A., Alex takes a job working in the mall in Barbra Streisand's Malibu basement. One day, the Lady Herself comes downstairs to play. It feels like real bonding in the basement, but will their relationship ever make it upstairs? BUYER & CELLAR is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things, and the oddest of odd jobs.
The New York Times critics Ben Brantley and Charles Isherwood recently raved about the play. Brantley wrote that Buyer & Cellar is "the most talked about new comedy of the season." WQXR Radio's Isherwood called the hit comedy "very funny" and "a tour-de-force performance."

Had a wonderful time at the show. At first I thought it would be difficult to sit through 100 minutes with no intermission, but the time flew by!! We were laughing and grinning for the entire show.

Definitely worth seeing. Funny, thought provoking and well done. Amazing that it was a one man show. If it comes to Atlanta, I'll go again.

    Michael Urie is a star!!

by UglyBettyWasAGreatShow on 6/13/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Michael Urie was excellent. He was a joy to watch the entire time. It's impressive how many characters he played--and each one was distinct. It also helped tremendously that the script was excellent. So funny. So entertaining.

    Tiresome--Irrelevant-Actor Charming

by RobinLA on 6/10/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I am not so interested in Barbara Streisand. And I think the stereotypical portrayal of gay men is also not especially interesting, accurate or in fact, any longer very funny! So I sort of squirm when low-intelligence plays like this one get staged--the actor did a fabulous job in this one-man performance but I wished he hadn't had to project a script that was uni-dimensional and dated for the most part. If you are not in at least your fifties, forget the show. You won't understand all the references to TV shows, music and others from times not today. And the mannerisms that play up straight people's concepts of gay relationship is just so clueless as actually not to be very funny. I'm not politically correct at all--just stating that the send-up is just a downer. I was bored, kept wishing it were 1/2 hour shorter and it could be. Just not a very interesting experience. Although everyone around me seemed to enjoy the play enormously--laughter, uproarious response. So I can't say that I speak for most.

    Buyer & Cellar

by Shamsch on 6/9/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Michael Urie was amazing! 100 straight minutes of himself, Barbra Streisand, & his boyfriend, all with suggestions by simple head movt, vocal inflection, some hand-gestures & Brooklyn accent: he was so believable in all three roles! The writing was funny and solid. Poignant, too. Great play.

    Buyer & Cellar was Robust!

by L1N1 on 6/4/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Imagine that you were the only Store Manager of every store in the underground Mall below the Mailbu home of Barbara Streisand. Imagine that the only person who ever shopped with you was Barbara Streisand. You become great Buddies. You of all people understand what a lonley life" Well known" People sometimes have..plus how quickly They are forgotten. You also realize how neurotic they can become... You suggest to Barbara that she could star in A New Broadway Play....with that suggestion of friendship: She invites you to the main floor of her Mailbu Mansion. Oh....Have I said too much??? Anywho: The lead Character is STELLAR in his interpretation of the events as they unfold! A MUST SEE!

    Michael Urie is genius!

by Smartie67 on 6/4/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

See.this.show. Really, not much more needs to be said. Excellent script, performed in a way that makes you forget there is only one actor on the stage. If I could, I would see every performance of this show before it leaves town.

    good writing !

by tomba716 on 6/4/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Loved the show, well written, clever premise, and a treat for Streisand fans......however, the sound was poor, could hardly hear the actor and we had great seats, had to work harder than I wish, to enjoy a show, in order to hear every word ! Did have a great time though !

    Wonderful!

by birdieblue29 on 6/4/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

My 16-daughter was looking for a play to go see and we both wanted something different - we very much found what we were looking for in this show. Michael Urie was charming, energetic and a pleasure to watch. To imagine a one-man show about anything for 100 minutes with no intermission was hard to visualize, but Mr. Urie was captivating. My mother was a Barbra Streisand fan from way back when, so it was fun to 'see her' in this way. Mr. Urie's representation of 'her' and Barry and James Brolin, etc. were way too much fun. Very funny and a couple of touching moments. My favorite, I believe it was 'Alex' who said, (paraphrasing) 'that life is like a play and we're just trying to find the right casting members'. What was part of the fun was that Mr. Urie seemed to be enjoying what he was performing. Being able to explain the show and being able to give Mr. Urie's performance justice is difficult - we just tell everyone to go see him. Thank you to the cast and crew for a wonderful memory with my daughter.

    Poignantly Funny

by ShortSatire on 6/4/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The premise is clever and that's held up throughout the play with surprising moments of insight into the downfalls of celebrity.
