Burning Spear on Tour

Roots/reggae sensation Burning Spear (real name Winston Rodney OD) is one the most respected artists in the history of Jamaica. A Rastafarian, Burning Spear is one of the most influential roots artists to come out of the 1970s. Throughout nearly four decades, more than 25 albums and countless live performances, Burning Spear has carried the torch of political activist Marcus Garvey. Through lyrics and rhythms and live performances that spread messages of peace and love to all, Burning Spear promotes self-determination and self-reliance for African descendants. Before Burning Spear embarked on a string of shows in the U.S. in 2022 -- his first tour since 2010 -- he announced that he would not be going out on long tours anymore. In a 2021 interview with Reggaeville, the singer/songwriter/musician said, "I don't think I will be touring again. Like going on the road for months, weeks. ... I will use my discretion and think about doing maybe a little show here and there." Seeing Burning Spear live should be on the bucket list of any reggae fan.

Burning Spear Live in Concert

Winston Rodney OD (aka Burning Spear) was born in 1948 in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica -- the same birthplace as the legendary Bob Marley, who set the singer/songwriter/musician off on his career in music. He met Marley while they were both living in St. Ann's and, as Burning Spear recalls in a bio on his website, "I say ... I would like to get involved in the music business. And Bob say, 'All right, just check Studio One." So, Rodney set off to Kingston for a meeting with Coxsone Dodd, the head of Studio One. It was there that Burning Spear released a series of singles, including the 1972 Jamaican smash hit "Joe Frazier (He Prayed)." Shortly after, Burning Spear released their first two classic albums: 1973's Studio One Presents Burning Spear and 1974's Rocking Time. After moving on to work with Jack Ruby, Burning Spear recorded "Marcus Garvey," which would become a successful hit song, followed by "Slavery Days." In 1975, Burning Spear released the Marcus Garvey album, one of the greatest albums to ever come out of Jamaica. Burning Spear subsequently released Man in the Hills (1976), Dry & Heavy (1977), Social Living (1978), and Hail H.I.M. (1980). These five albums remain a seminal canon of dread roots, carrying on the legacy of Burning Spear for decades to come.

Band was tight and event staff was awesome

by Roots Reality on 7/26/22Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San Diego

Winston Rodney is 77 years old and that explains the low energy of his performance but the band was tight as always. I was a little surprised that it was only a 7 piece and didn't recognize the bass player. Venue was super cool and the event staff, mostly older people, was sorry e polite and respectful. Disappointed that Burning Spear didn't have merchandise for sale.

Burning Spear Still on Fire at 77 years old

by Spear Burning on 7/26/22Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San Diego

Burning Spear absolutely killed it at this show. His band was on point, sound was perfect, and the bass was booming. I was super bummed I missed his last tour of CA when he played Hollywood Bowl and was even more bummed when he announced his retirement from touring soon thereafter. Luckily he’s back on this Fan Appreciation Tour in 2022. Don’t miss out on what could be the last chance you get to see this living legend.

    A real reggae experience

    by K. L. on 7/24/22

Burning Spear is probably the last living legend of the pioneers of roots reggae who knows and understands what it takes to truly perform this kind of music with the soul needed to do it right. It's no easy task because everyone in the band has to be on the same level and Spear makes sure of that. Every member is hand picked by him when he records and when he tours. Much like Herbie Hancock or even the late Frank Zappa, these musicians who make up is his band are the best of the best. In turn, there is no such thing as a disappointing Burning Spear performance. You get to see, and more importantly, feel the real deal. This is roots reggae. This is how it's done and last night was no exception. Soon, it will be gone to the history books so catch it while you still can.

    A Historic Concert!

by Vinnessa on 12/8/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

For Burning Spear's final performance in Los Angeles he gave a wonderful vibrant showing. 80 years young Spear hopped up and down onstage beating the conga drums like a young turk. He made the evening memorable and we were treated to a heartfelt renditions of his great catalog of meaningful and soul stirring music. The historic nature of the performance was not lost on both the audience and the veteran performer. He ended the night on an upbeat and rousing note. One that we will never forget.

    Spear Burning!

by Anonymous on 6/30/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Reggae at its finest! World peace would prevail if everyone could have been at the Bowl Sunday night listening to Spear's powerful message of one love. Sad to imagine this legend not continuing to tour and to give the world the opportunity to really feel reggae's message personally and masterfully as only he can do. Thanks Hollywood Bowl for hosting the show and giving Spear a suitable and beautiful venue to deliver an awe inspiring performance for all of us humble listeners to savor and cherish. Thanks, Winston Rodney, for sharing your incredible gift with the world throughout this lifetime. As you say yourself, you ARE a true original. See you in the hills! Irie!

At 71 years young, Burning Spear's inspirational founding father (Winston Rodney) totally rocked the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday night with his timeless lyrics, super tight band and heavy reggae rhythms. In short, Burning Spear's performance was Epic!!! Hard to believe that Burning Spear's journey began in 1969. See this band whenever & wherever you can!

    Amazing!!!

by Savysav on 6/29/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The concert was amazing, but the crowd was lame! I was cheering so loud cause I was loving the show, but I didn't feel the energy from the people. This was also my first time at the venue and I thought it was all great. I wish I would of known you could bring your own food and alcohol to the venue.

Spear still Burning!Excellent And Original Reggae

by FlyRasta on 6/29/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The show was as expected for his is an excellent and original reggae artist whose music has not changed and no gamicks. This was his last performance in California, and for a 71 years old performing since 1969; he has not lost any steps.
